CenterPoint Energy Foundation Awards $100,000 to Youth First, Inc. For Education

0

CenterPoint Energy Foundation is investing in Indiana youth. The organization has awarded $100,000 to Youth First, Inc. to strengthen the mental health and well-being of students at Delaware Elementary School and Glenwood Leadership Academy in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC).

This significant gift from CenterPoint Energy Foundation, along with funding from other sources, will enable Youth First to provide school-based social work services and prevention programs at Delaware and Glenwood.

Speaking at a check presentation at Glenwood on October 6, Amanda Schmitt, CenterPoint Foundation President, stated: “This gift is part of our commitment to seeing communities thrive and seeing students reach their potential. As you all know, the last two years have been really difficult and I am so honored to partner with organizations like Youth First to ensure the last two years don’t define the next ten years. We want to make sure our students at Delaware and Glenwood continue to succeed and learn.”

Dr. David Smith, Superintendent of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, remarked, “CenterPoint is investing in the communities they serve so we can write our own future, rather than being defined by the past. There’s nothing more noble or worthy than investing in our youth to help them have a better life.”

Glenwood Principal Angela Oliver said, “Here at Glenwood, we believe in growing the whole child. We’re very committed to making sure our students are socially, emotionally and mentally healthy. We know our students can’t learn on the academic front until all of those other needs are met, so it’s a high priority for us. Youth First Social Worker Tiffany Austin has been here for 10 years and has created relationships and trust with our families. When they need something, they know our school is the hub of the community and they can call the office and ask to speak to Mrs. Austin to help meet some of those extra needs beyond academics. She is the face of GLA (Glenwood Leadership Academy).”

Youth First is addressing the growing need for mental health support in school buildings, partnering with 110 schools across 12 Indiana counties to embed skilled social workers, where they become specialized mentors for students and prevention coaches for parents and teachers. Youth First Social Workers build caring relationships, promote healthy choices, foster readiness for positive change, and boost resiliency along with other valuable life skills.

EVANSVILLE REGION SUMMIT

We believe in the Evansville Region’s future. Between the life-long locals and our newest residents, there’s an abundance of compelling people, talents, and perspectives.

We are a community looking to the future, and that is where Talent EVV comes in. What is Talent EVV? It is our community’s pledge to growth and the bright future we envision for the Evansville Region. By committing to specific goals in our community’s strategic plan, we can show our neighbors and future neighbors why E is the perfect place to call home, but we cannot do this work alone.

On Wednesday, November 2,  from  8- 11 am the Talent EVV Partners

(E-REP, United Way of Southwestern Indiana, Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana, and the Welborn Baptist Foundation) invite you to join this inspirational work through a collaborative Summit.

Together, we can build the community we want to be.

During the morning you will have an opportunity to…

•    Connect with other delegates from around the region.

•    Hear from leaders and residents about what this region is doing to be better
and different from our peers.

•    Learn what you can be doing or share what you have done to impact change.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Athletics announced the addition of Kara Carlson as its Director of Academic and Support Services for the Screaming Eagles. She will serve as the liaison between Athletics, each of USI’s four college, the USI Center for Exploring Major advising centers, and the USI Registrar.

“USI is really excited to have Kara join our Athletics team,” said USI Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall. “Kara will be a huge resource for our student athletes, helping them to be as successful in the classroom as they are in athletic competition.”

Carlson comes to USI after spending a year at the University of Evansville as an assistant women’s basketball coach (2021-22) and recruiting coordinator. She helped guide incoming freshmen players through the admissions process and was the player academic coach, in addition to her regular coaching duties.

Prior to her tenure at Evansville, Carlson spent three successful seasons at Grand Valley State University (2018-21) and helped guide the Lakers to a 71-13 mark. GVSU appeared in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional each of her three seasons as an assistant.

Carlson, a native of Kent City, Michigan, earned her bachelor’s degree from CUAA in family life education in 2016.

You Have To #OVCit. The Eagles host Southeast Missouri State for a pair of matches this weekend. This is the first matchup between the two programs since 1990 when the Redhawks were in NCAA DII and the Mid-American Athletic Association.

Going Green for Mental Health Awareness. When the Eagles and Redhawks battle on Friday night, the USI Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host a Mental Health Awareness Night in honor of Mental Health Awareness week hosted by the Ohio Valley Conference SAAC. This night is dedicated to removing the stigma surrounding mental health discussions in today’s society. USI invites all attendees to wear green to support mental health awareness.

Season Leaders. Junior Leah Anderson leads the group with 187 kills and 12 aces as junior Katherine Koch holds a team-high 338 assists. On defense, freshman Keira Moore has received 233 digs as sophomore Paris Downing has earned 55 blocks.

OVC Leaders. There are five Eagles who sit atop the best in five different categories within the OVC individual standings. Anderson ranks fifth in points (216.5) and eighth in kills (187) while Koch holds fourth most assists per set (7.04). Moore has tallied 233 digs and 3.95 digs per set, putting her at seventh. Downing is currently fifth with 1.08 blocks per set while sophomore Lauren O’Neill is tenth with 32 blocks.

History in the Making. With Anderson becoming the 15th player to reach 1,000 kills, her new goal is to become the 13th player to reach the 1,000-dig plateau (973). If successful, Anderson would become the fifth player in program history to reach both milestones.
