USI’s Greiwe nets second OVC honor

0

University of Southern Indiana junior Lauren Greiwe (West Harrison, Indiana) was named the Ohio Valley Conference co-Runner of the Week for women’s cross country Tuesday afternoon in an announcement by the league office.

Greiwe was the top OVC finisher at the Bradley “Pink” Classic this past Friday, finishing 35th out of 309 competitors with a personal-best six-kilometer time of 21 minutes, 11.9 seconds. Her time pushed her to No. 8 on the program’s all-time 6K list and helped lift the Screaming Eagles to a 16th-place finish in the 38-team field.

Other OVC teams in the field included Eastern Illinois University, Southeast Missouri State University, SIU Edwardsville and Lindenwood University. The Eagles were the top finishing team from the OVC, edging out 17th-place finisher Eastern Illinois by 53 points.

Tuesday’s honor marks the second time this season Greiwe has netted co-OVC Runner of the Week honors. She became the first USI Women’s Cross Country runner in program history to earn OVC Runner of the Week accolades after garnering the honor following her efforts at the Appalachian State Covered Bridge Open last month.

USI wraps up its first season as an NCAA Division I competitor when it partakes in the OVC Championships October 29 in Cookeville, Tennessee.

48 Hours in the Life: The Homeless Experience Project 2.0 2022

Aurora’s immersive experience is positioned to raise awareness and needed funds for the organization’s work to prevent and end homelessness.

EVANSVILLE – Over 350 men, women, children, and seniors experience homelessness in Evansville each year. At Aurora, our mission is “creating solutions to prevent and end homelessness in our community.” It is Aurora’s duty to not only serve the most vulnerable but to ensure that our community is aware, engaged, and activated to prevent and end homelessness here in Southwestern Indiana.

November is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness month. Last year, Aurora hosted the first 48 Hours in the Life: The Homeless Experience Project. During that project, 12 community leaders and volunteers each received a unique backstory, along with a number of challenges and scenarios to navigate while living on the streets of Evansville for two days and nights. We found it to be the perfect time to shed light on the struggles our most vulnerable population experiences, so we will repeat the event this year from November 17-19.

Like last year, each of the thirteen participants will receive unique scenarios, backstories, and challenges that differ for each participant and are designed to reflect experiences similar to those our clients face on a daily basis.

The purpose of this event is three-fold:

First, to raise awareness. This project will help our community and leaders gain at least a small perspective about our city’s most vulnerable people. Our planning team has no delusions that this immersive 48-hour experience will give the participants a full understanding of what it is those experiencing homelessness face every day. However, it is our intention to grow a greater community-wide understanding and compassion for people who struggle with barriers to housing.

Second, to raise funds for the housing programs Aurora offers. Aurora serves as the lead homeless service agency in region 12 serving 10 counties in southwest Indiana. As a nonprofit, we rely on support from the public and special fundraising events in order to provide quality services to those experiencing homelessness in our community.

Third, to lift up our community in support and the vital programs they provide. Ultimately, our case managers and social workers rely on the vast social service network in our community. We are successful because of the cooperation and coordination of each agency’s focused services.

48 Hours in the Life will begin Thursday, November 17th at 12 PM. All participants will meet at Aurora where they will receive their instructions and then be immersed in the experience until Saturday, November 19th at 12 PM.

The community leaders are: Kayla McGrew, Spreading Kindness with Sophie; BobbieAnn McGrew, Spreading Kindness with Sophie; Noah Stubbs, Director of Communications, City of Evansville; Kaitlin Moore, City Council Member, City of Evansville and Associate Pastor of Community Development at Trinity United Methodist Church; Brian Miller, Evening Anchor, WEVV/44 News; Dr. Thomas Stratton, ECHO Community Healthcare; Kim Wren, Financial Advisor, Baird Wealth Advisors; Dr. James Porter, Deaconess Health Systems; Chadd Huffman, Homes by Huffman and Aurora Board President; Rachelle Chrisman, Assistant Vice President, Fifth Third Commercial Bank; Taylor Merriss, Special Projects Coordinator, Evansville Police Department; Paul Green, Retired Business Manager/Financial Secretary, IBEW Local 16 and Aurora Board Treasurer; Noah Robinson, Lieutenant, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.

To help raise awareness and funds, each participant will have their own crowdfunding web page where the public can make online donations on their behalf. Checks can also be sent to Aurora at 1001 Mary St., Evansville, IN 47710, Attn: Kim Armstrong. The participants are each challenged to raise $5000.

Livestreams on Aurora’s Facebook page will also be available periodically throughout the event so participants can share their personal experiences with the public and help promote a better understanding of what life is like for many of our clients. The media is encouraged to use video and audio from those live streams to supplement coverage. Additionally, we encourage interviews with our executive director, Zac Heronemus, and past participants to raise awareness of this year’s event in the days leading up to it. We respectfully ask you to refrain from following the participants during the event as a matter of safety for our clients and participants.

A closing ceremony, that includes a news briefing, as well as participant testimonies and interview availability, will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 19 in Aurora’s parking lot at 1001 Mary Street.

Please stay tuned for the upcoming 48 Hours in the Life: The Homeless Experience Project 2.0.

For more information or inquiries, please contact Zac Heronemus, Executive Director or Sophie Hancock, Marketing and Development Associate for Aurora, as listed above

Tom McDermott, Jessica McClellan, Katherine Rybak, Jason Salstrom, and Kaitlin Moore to Continue “Contract With Women” Statewide Tour in Evansville.

The “Contract with Women” tour will focus on restoring the right to choose, fixing Indiana’s dismal maternal mortality rate, passing legitimate workplace protections, and more Democrats urge Republicans, and all Hoosiers to join them in signing a pledge to build a brighter future for women and girls across Indiana

Today at 12:00 PM CT in Evansville, Tom McDermott (Candidate for U.S. Senate), Jessica McClellan (Candidate for State Treasurer), Katherine Rybak (Candidate for Indiana House District 76), Jason Salstrom, (Candidate for Indiana House District 78), Kaitlin Moore (Evansville City Councilor – At-Large), and Cheryl Schultz (Chairwoman of the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party) will continue the “Contract with Women” tour, a statewide effort calling on all Democrats and Republicans to sign a pledge that would put women and girls’ future – not special interests and agendas – first. The Indiana Democratic Party also urges Hoosiers to add their name as well by going to www.indems.org/contractforwomen.

WHO:  Tom McDermott (Candidate for U.S. Senate)

Jessica McClellan (Candidate for State Treasurer)

Katherine Rybak (Candidate for Indiana House District 76)

Jason Salstrom, (Candidate for Indiana House District 78)

Kaitlin Moore (Evansville City Councilor – At-Large)

Cheryl Schultz (Chairwoman of the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party)

WHEN: 12:00 PM CT, October 18, 2022

WHERE: Vanderburgh Democratic Party County Headquarters

220 NW 4th St, Evansville, IN 47708

The “Contract With Women” pledge Includes the Following:

  • Restoring the freedom to choose,

  • Expanding the right to birth control and other contraceptives,

  • Fixing Indiana’s dismal maternal mortality rate,

  • Passing legitimate workplace protections for women – especially pregnant women,

  • Repealing the state’s high taxes on hygiene products,

  • Addressing the state’s childcare crisis, and

  • Creating a statewide Pre-K system for our children.

“Women will determine Indiana’s future, and it’s past time for politicians to prioritize an agenda that will create better lives for them. Signing the ‘Contract with Women’ means pledging to restore the right to choose, fix the state’s dismal maternal mortality rate, pass legitimate workplace protections, and solve other common-sense problems facing women and families across Indiana,” said Myla Eldridge, Vice Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party and Marion County Democratic Party Chairwoman. “Whether it’s their unpopular abortion ban or simply a failure to hold their own accountable, Indiana Republicans simply do not respect or value women in our state. A vote for Democrats this year is a vote to fix the mess Republicans have created across Indiana and give Hoosier women more freedom in their daily lives.”

Todd Young and Indiana Republicans in state government simply do not respect or value women in the state. Senator Young is 100% anti-choice and confirmed the three U.S. Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. Republicans at the statehouse passed a dangerous abortion ban in a special session and have failed to fix the state’s dismal maternal mortality rate. Diego Morales is accused of sexual assault against Republican women he worked with.

Republican government overreach and extremism is harming the women of Indiana and the Democrats’ “Contract with Women” Tour will show Hoosier voters that our party is ready to champion women and girls and create a brighter future for everyone.

FOOTNOTE:  The “Contract with Women” Tour will be the eleventh and final statewide tour by the Indiana Democratic Party for the 2022 election year. Once finished, the state party will have held more than 160 events in about 70 counties in about a year and a half.

Indiana FFA Represented In National Officer Candidate Process

0

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 17, 2022) — Indiana FFA members have a lot to look forward to at the 95thNational FFA Convention & Expo this month in Indianapolis. The organization looks for the success of all 12,000 members but highlights the success of the 2022 Indiana FFA National Officer Candidate and the National Officer Nominating Committee Chairperson.

Derick Williams of the Union City FFA Chapter in Union City, Indiana, has been selected by Indiana FFA to represent the organization as its 2022 National Officer Candidate.

“I am so excited to watch Derick represent our great state on the National FFA stage,” said Lt. Gov. Crouch, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “FFA is the pipeline for agriculture and a great youth development organization. These young leaders involved are sure to go far, and Derick is no exception.”

Williams is the 21-year-old son of Erick and Georgiana Williams and is currently a student at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Prior to college, he served as the 2020-2021 Indiana FFA State Reporter and the 2021 Indiana FFA National Officer Candidate. This is Williams’s seventh year as a member of the Union City FFA Chapter, under the leadership of Mr. Ron Smith and Mrs. Cindy Nunez.

“I hope to create a platform where members and advisors alike feel heard and appreciated,” said Williams about his goal while running for a position on the 2022-2023 National FFA Officer Team. “I want to use my officer engagements to bring excitement and energy back into our FFA work.”

Williams is one of 35 FFA members from across the nation that will vie for a spot on the six person National FFA Officer team. The process to be selected as a National FFA Officer is an arduous task of interviews with the National FFA Officer Nominating Committee.

“I know how hard Derick has prepared for this event and I sincerely thank him for all the hard work he has put into this process and the family members, educators, advisors and business professionals who have helped him along the way,” said Bruce Kettler, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “The National FFA Officer Candidates must be well-rounded individuals in FFA, agriculture, agriculture policy, future agriculture planning, world topics and many other issues. I know Derick will make Indiana proud.”

Julia Hamblen of the Shelbyville FFA Chapter in Shelbyville, Indiana, has been designated as the 2022 National Officer Nominating Committee Chairperson by the current National FFA Officer Team. Hamblen is currently enrolled at Purdue University’s College of Agriculture studying Agricultural Education. As a member of the nine-person Nominating Committee, Hamblen will put in countless hours and play a pivotal role in nominating the 2022-2023 National FFA Officer Team.

“This is an experience that high school Julia dreamed of, but never thought of as a possibility, with my chapter starting in 2017,” Julia said about being selected as the Chairperson. “Yet, here we are, and that dream has become a reality.”

The roles of National Officer Candidate and National FFA Officer Nomination Committee are made available to a select few FFA members each year. Indiana FFA is proud of the youth leaders that are developed through its programming at the state and local levels. The 95th National FFA Convention & Expo will be held in Indianapolis from October 26 – 29, 2022. Williams and Hamblen will be joined by numerous Indiana FFA members competing in events and participating in leadership development and community service programs

FOOTNOTE:Derick Williams will represent Indiana FFA as the 2022 National Officer Candidate and Julia Hamblen to serve on the National Officer Nominating Committee as Chairperson. Both individuals will represent Indiana FFA at the 95th National FFA Convention & Expo this month.
