With the support of the Vanderburgh County Council, the Vanderburgh County Commissioners were proud to award Parenting Time Center with $50,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funds.
To respond to the public health emergency impact with respect to COVID-19 and its negative economic impacts, Vanderburgh County appropriated funds to non-profit organizations whose missions focus on arts, culture, and educational initiatives benefiting the County’s residents. Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) was selected by the County to administer the funds for community development, grant administration, financial management, and grant close-out services for the funds. Through its facilitation and scoring process, E-REP made the recommendation of the Parenting Time Center to the Commissioners.
Parenting Time Center’s mission is to empower parents and children to create positive relationships in a safe and nurturing environment. Opened in 2009, Parenting Time Center is the only professional supervised visit and exchange center in a nine-county area of Southwestern Indiana, as well as Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky. Children come to Parenting Time Center as victims of family conflict and are given the voice and knowledge of how to have a healthy relationship with their parents. Parenting Time Center’s vision is to break the generational cycle of fragile families through services, partnerships, and collaboration.

USI and SWIRCA and More, a local agency on aging, will present the 16th annual Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness (MAIA) August 10-11 on the USI campus.
MAIA is a two-day gerontology conference for healthcare and social service professionals, healthcare administrators, clinicians, older adults or retirees, family members providing care for a loved one, students and anyone who wants to learn tips for leading a healthier life. The USI Foundation is hosting the second annual speaker for the Edward D. and Regina Rechnic Holocaust Series from 7-8 p.m. Monday, September 18 in Carter Hall, located in University Center West on the USI campus.
The presentation, “My Family’s Holocaust Story and the Threats We Face Today,†will feature Margaret McMullan, author of nine award-winning books, followed by a Q&A session with audience members. A reception will follow, and the event is open to the public at no charge.

Tennessee painter Mary Laube to display work at USI’s New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art
The University of Southern Indiana’s New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) is proud to present Parallel to the Earth, featuring paintings by Tennessee artist Mary Laube.
Parallel to the Earth runs from Saturday, August 12 to Saturday, September 16, opening with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 12 in conjunction with New Harmony Second Saturdays. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Laube and other Korean Americans often experienced otherness as they gained knowledge of their Asian heritage through bits and pieces while being socialized in predominantly white communities. Her work transforms the concept of identity in the diaspora. She sees her paintings as objects—containers that store memory and desire, exercising the right to deny interpretive aid. She explores the dynamics of individual identity juxtaposed with broader collective formations of culture. Laube’s art practice looks at museum artifacts, architecture, and land related to historic preservation, and she reimagines these objects as paintings, which, in turn, become artifacts of displacement, reunion, decolonization, memorial and myth.
In Parallel to the Earth, we see idealized or romanticized versions of mundane objects. These objects are flattened but dimensional. The use of light and shadows allude to things happening in the periphery. Often, Laube’s paintings become a way to converse with ancestors by use of metaphors from Korean Shamanism. Her paintings are both a vestige of the past as well as a repertoire of the present, a form of storytelling capable of change.
Laube, who was born in Seoul, Korea, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Illinois State University and a master’s in fine arts from the University of Iowa.
Past exhibitions include the Knoxville Museum of Art, Ortega y Gasset Projects in New York; VCU Qatar, Doha; Monaco, Missouri; The Spring Break Art Show, New York; and Coop Gallery, Tennessee. Artist residencies include Yaddo, Wassaic Project; the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; Vermont Studio Center; and Stiwdeo Maelor in Corris, Wales. Past publications include Art Maze Mag, Maake Magazine and New American Paintings. In 2019, Laube received the Contemporary Visual Art Bronze Award from AHL Foundation. She is a co-founder of the Warp Whistle Project, a collaborative duo with composer Paul Schuette. Together, they make work merging kinetic stage sets with musical performances.
The NHGCA at the University of Southern Indiana promotes discourse about, and access to, contemporary art in the southern Indiana region. The NHGCA is a proud outreach partner of the University of Southern Indiana.

Evansville, IN– April, 2023, marks the 30 year anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. UE Women’s Basketball adds Tené Smith to 2023-24 class
Smith joins the Purple Aces to begin her collegiate career
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Head Coach Robyn Scherr-Wells has announced the signing of freshman point guard/shooting guard Tené McFarquhar-Smith for the upcoming women’s basketball season.
“I am thrilled to welcome Tené to Evansville!†says Scherr-Wells. “Her athleticism and ability to play the point with pace fills a need we have in our program. We love the way she leads on the floor and her basketball IQ. She makes good decisions in pick and roll action and can finish at the rim. She is a very capable shooter and will keep the defense honest with her ability to knock down shots.
“What sold me on Tené was her character, work ethic, and personality. She and I connected instantly which is very important between a point guard and her head coach. I know Tené will be a great ambassador for Evansville on and off the court!â€
Smith joins the Purple Aces with a wealth of experience on both the local and national stage in Canada. A Brampton, Ontario native, she spent the past year playing for the Kings Christian Collegiate women’s basketball team. With the King’s, Smith averaged shooting totals in the double-digits, including a career best 17-point performance against Crestwood Preparatory College.
“With a welcoming coaching staff, an intimate campus, and a playing style that fits me like a glove, basketball at the University of Evansville is more than a game but a pursuit of passion, which is why I’m ecstatic to start my journey at UE!,†Smith says of her signing.
Smith played club basketball with the Brampton Lady Warriors. During the regular season, the Lady Warriors had a perfect record of 57-0 under Head Coach Keith Johnson. Smith was also a member of Team Canada for the Jr. NBA Global Tournament. With the Canadian Jr. NBA team, she participated in the tournament finals and was recognized as an International Champion and a World Champion Silver Medalist.
Along with her involvement in the Jr. NBA program, Smith was a member of Team Ontario with Canada Basketball. She was named a Canada Basketball Targeted Athlete, a program that identities top Canadian athletes that receive additional training and development opportunities. She also played with Canada Elite on the Under Armour Circuit.
Away from the court. Smith enjoys reading and discovering new R&B music. She will be majoring in psychology during her four years in Evansville.
USI Women’s Soccer alum Mia Daly first to sign pro in program history
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Former University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer defender Mia Rose Daly (Haiku, Hawaii) has signed a professional contract to play for Keynsham Town L.F.C. of the FA Women’s National League in England. The club is in Tier 4 and in Division One South West. Daly is the first player to sign professionally in USI Women’s Soccer history.

The club is in Keynsham, England, which is in the southwest portion of England close to Bristol and Bath and not too far from Wales.
Daly and Keynsham Town L.F.C. kicked off the preseason on Sunday with a 2-0 win. Daly started and played all 90 minutes at outside left back. The preseason will continue until the start of the regular season in a couple of weeks on August 20.
“Mia is fulfilling her dream of playing professional soccer,” USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein said. “Since she was a youth player in Hawaii, her dream was to play professionally in England and now she has realized her dream.”
Daly was a graduate transfer to USI ahead of the 2022 season. She started all 16 matches she appeared in for the Screaming Eagles, playing a total of 1,396 minutes and every minute in 12 matches last season.
Daly helped lead USI’s defense to seven shutouts and 0.82 goals against average, both second-best in the Ohio Valley Conference. Offensively, Daly recorded three shots and scored her only goal of the season in Southern Indiana’s first-round match against Lindenwood University in the OVC Championship Tournament.
The Haiku, Hawaii native came to USI after starting her collegiate career at Long Island University before finishing her undergrad at St. Francis College (N.Y.).
For her entire collegiate career, Daly started 73 of 77 matches appeared in, playing over 6,337 total minutes with two career goals scored.
Daly grew up in Hawaii playing club soccer with Po’okela Soccer Club, along with Rush Hawaii where she was a member of the state championship teams in 2017 and 2018.
Last January, Daly registered for the National Women’s Soccer League Draft, stepping into the world of professional soccer.
“We are so proud of Mia and excited to watch her professional career,” Schoenstein added.

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb is directing flags to be flown at half-staff in Johnson County in honor and remembrance of Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy Timothy J. Guyer. Deputy Guyer died in the line of duty on Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Flags should be flown at half-staff in Johnson County from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, Aug. 8. Gov. Holcomb is asking businesses and residents in Johnson County to lower their flags to half-staff.
