Evansville emerged victorious in an extra inning nail biter by a score of 2-1 against the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night at Bosse Field. Lake Erie jumped out to an early lead thanks to a solo homerun in the second inning. Josh Allen would bring the game to a tie following a solo shot of his own that was clobbered just to the right of the left-field foul pole. After the homer Evansville starting right-hander, Luc Rennie, cruised through the next 4.1 innings. Rennie finished the solid outing with 5 strikeouts, while only surrendering 6 hits throughout the contest. Showcasing a remarkable relief pitching performance, neither team mustered a single hit through the standard nine inning frames, with the score remaining at 1-1. When the eleventh inning came rolling around, an international tie breaker rule took precedence that brought each team an opportunity to begin the inning with a runner at second base. Once the Crushers failed to score in the top half of the frame, the Otters pounced on the opportunity for victory. Rolando Gomez opened the 11th with a bunt single to put runners at the corners, with zero outs. Succeeding an intentional walk to load the bases, Chris Breen was drilled by a pitch to bring home the winning run and seal an Otter win in the books.
Looking ahead, Evansville looks to win the rubber match of a three game series tomorrow versus the Lake Erie Crushers, with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm CDT. Tickets available at www.evansvilleotters.com or by phone at 812-435-8686 ext. 21.
