Curtis J. Kinney, 89, of Evansville, IN passed away Monday, July 8, 2019 at North River Health Campus. He was born in Evansville on January 5, 1930 to Curtis W. and Mary Beatrice Kinney. He was married to Evelyn (McCutchan) Kinney for 52 years.
He was a lifetime member of St. James East United Methodist Church which merged with McCutchanville Community Church, holding many leadership positions within the churches.
Curtis graduated from Indiana University with a BS and MS in Education and was an avid fan of IU football and basketball. He was a proud member of the IU Alumni Marching 100 Band.
Upon graduation from IU, he taught business subjects for 2 years in New Baden, IL, 2 years in Medford, Oregon, and 36 Years in the EVSC school system teaching 10 years at North High School and 26 years teaching Data Processing being the first licensed teacher in Indiana to teach data processing. His data processing intensive lab was recognized in 1985 by the U.S. Office of Education with the “Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Vocational Education Program.†He ended his teaching career as the Business Education Supervisor for the EVSC.
Curtis was state membership chairman for the National Business Education Association, served on the state advisory council for business education and has been president of many professional organizations, including the National Business Education Association, Indiana Business Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Indiana Business Educators’ Club.
He was a charter member of the Southern Indiana Antique and Machinery Club (SIAM). A Past Master of Constellation Lodge #748, 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Member of Hadi Shrine Temple where he played in the Brass Band and drove the hospital van. He served on the Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 20 years, serving as Chairman for 2 years. He also started the Rogue Teachers Federal Credit Union in Medford, Oregon, which now has over 100,000 members. He was a 50 year 4-H volunteer and member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Evelyn Rose (McCutchan) Kinney.
He is survived by sons, C. Wayne Kinney (Beth), Keith Kinney (Debbie); daughter, Sarah Dalp (Steve); grandchildren, Jeff Kinney (Lindsey), Julie Burczyk (Ryan), Elizabeth Sponseller (Adam), Isaac Kinney (fiancée, Mary Weber), Daniel Dalp (Whitney), Katie Marble (Jody); great-grandchildren, Whitney Kinney, Brooklyn Kinney, Allison Burczyk, Andrew Burczyk, Oliver Sponseller, Evelyn Dalp; sister, Marie Kinney Pickett; many nieces and nephews; special niece, Barbara Doty (Victor); and special friend, Terry Wall. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2019 at McCutchanville Community Church, 9505 Petersburg Road, Evansville, officiated by Pastor Greg Davis with burial in Bluegrass Church Cemetery. Friends may visit 2-7 p.m. Friday at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road, Evansville with a Masonic memorial service at 6:30 p.m. held by Constellation Lodge #748, and a 33rd Degree walk through by the Evansville Valley Scottish Rite. Visitation will also be 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.
