Nine production technicians at the Cleveland Cliffs (formerly AK Steel) plant in Rockport, IN, have earned an interdisciplinary Industrial Workforce Certificate and Workforce Technical Certificate from Ivy Tech’s Tell City Career & Technology Center location.

“This is an example of a great employer who has developed a way to ‘grow their own’ employees into positions they need and retain talent. It’s why people apply here – they know that Cleveland Cliffs invests in their employees,” said Kyla Dowell, lead employer consultant for Ivy Tech’s Evansville campus. “These individuals, after growing their skillset through classes in such things as basic electricity, motors & motor controls, programmable controllers, and automation-mechatronics electrical and robotic systems, to name just a few, have learned in areas their employer needs and have put themselves in a good spot to move into new positions at the plant.”

General Manager Scott Davis said Cleveland Cliffs could have chosen from a wide variety of options to skill up their employees. “We thought about how do we work to set ourselves up to make transitions. We figured that we need to build on top of what we have today, so we chose Ivy Tech,” Davis said.

Katie King, site director for the Tell City Career & Technology Center handed out the diplomas to the graduates. “The best part of this job is being a part of graduation day. Taking classes close to home, with employer support, gives these graduates opportunities to advance in their careers with their Ivy Tech degree.”

  • Patrick Burch – Whitesville, Kentucky
  • Stacey Crazymule – Cannelton, Indiana

  • Johnnie Keener – Utica, Kentucky
