Men’s basketball travels to Saint Louis on Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Squaring off on the hardwood for the first time since 1998, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team is set to take on Saint Louis on Saturday evening inside Chaifetz Arena.  Set for a 6PM tip, the game will be carried live on Bally’s Sports Midwest and ESPN+.

Last Time Out                                                                                                            

– Leading for 39 out of a possible 40 minutes, the Purple Aces opened the season with a 78-74 road win over Miami Ohio

– Kenny Strawbridge Jr. paced UE with 23 points and hit 9 of his 17 attempts

– Yacine Toumi scored the first 8 points of the night for the Aces before finishing with 15 tallies and a 2-for-4 showing from outside

– Sekou Kalle led all players with a career-high 10 rebounds

Adding Some Perspective                                                                                                           

– Monday’s victory was the first season-opening win for the program since a 79-75 triumph over Ball State in 2019

– It was the first season-opening road win in 28 years when the Aces picked up a 63-51 win over Western Michigan to open the 1994-95 season; since that time, UE opened the season on the road on six occasions and dropped each contest

What a Debut

– Knocking down 9 of his 17 attempts, Kenny Strawbridge Jr. scored 23 points to lead UE to a 78-74 win at Miami Ohio in the season opener

– His debut was the best for Evansville since DeAndre Williams scored 26 against Ball State in his first game with the program in 2019

– The effort has him tied for the top scoring average in the MVC

– Strawbridge scored a team-high 18 points in the exhibition win over Huntington

Starting Strong

– Yacine Toumi scored the first eight Aces points at Miami before finishing the game with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting

– In seven games as a member of the Little Rock program in 2020-21, Toumi did not attempt a 3-pointer, but in the opener he was 2-for-4

– He added three rebounds, two assists and two steals

– Toumi averaged 4.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Aces two exhibition games

– Saint Louis opened the 2022-23 season with a 91-68 victory over Murray State on Monday

– Javonte Perkins paced the Billikens with 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting

– Gibson Jimerson completed the opener with 20 points

– Javon Pickett and Francis Okoro hauled in 13 rebounds apiece as SLU had a 48-34 rebounding edge

– Last season, Saint Louis was 23-12 and earned a berth in the Postseason NIT where they dropped an 80-68 decision against Northern Iowa
