RETURN NAVY CAPTAIN BRETT GRAZIA BACK TO THE UUS THEODORE ROOSEVELT

29 APR 2020

by JAMES GOODDALL

EVANSVILLE, IND.

Not sure how many of you old Navy salts are following the story of Navy Capt / Brett Grazia.  He was commander of the USS  Theodore  Roosevelt and raised hell to get support for his crew who had COVID-19 virus.
He was fired by Navy Secretary Thomas Mody for being more concerned about this crew than his career. After going to the USS Roosevelt to make an ass of himself to the crew concerning Capt / Grazia action. Secretary Mody resigned, that is a good end to that dirtbag.
I have served with a good many top-line military officers, not many of them would have guts and backbone to take action Capt / Brett Grazia did on behave of his crew. It has been recommended Capt / Brett Grazia returns to command the USS Roosevelt.
Now hope the top Navy brass has the guts and backbone to return him to command the USS Roosevelt. That my two cents on the issue.
Thanks and take care.

  1. Worked with many fine officers over the years and never found one stupid enough to write multiple copies of a letter and throwing it to the wind. Would not like to go into combat with this officer. He’s indecisive, prone to whining, and failed to act in a commanding fashion. What did he expect, a genie to show up. He acted before his command was given a chance to respond and any good military person knows that words are nothing but air, put it on paper and you don’t have a prayer. As far as his leadership ability, not observed.

  2. Newspeak: So he should wait until many of his crew ended up dead from the virus. This guy is my hero. I guess you support leadership that waits until it is popular to act. I sure wouldn’t want you in charge.

    • Very simple, verbal communication to one person, your boss. The boss gives you further instructions on how to proceed and how to combat the disease. Arrogance almost always leads to humiliation. Sorry he’s not my hero, my hero states the problem, collects data, analysis the data and makes an action plan, this effectively instills confidence at all levels in his ability to lead. This was a combat ready ship with a specific mission plan for a specific objective in defense of this country. He apparently didn’t take that charge seriously. His actions created a window of vulnerability in defense of this nation.

  3. Is this fellow, who wrote the letter, talking about Captain Brett Crozier? Sure as heck wouldn’t want mix identities in such a touchy case. The military, as most of you who have been in the military know, is quite strict about Chain of Command. If this Captain dumped the chain and went rogue, as much as I understand his humanitarian and national defense concern, he made a big whoops. He’s lucky that he got off with just being removed from his ship command. Hearken back to Five Star General Douglas MacArthur’s little feud with President Harry Truman. If you don’t recall that one, you should look it up. They take the Chain of Command very, very, seriously.

  4. I served three tours in Vietnam on three different carriers. I had commanding officers who went agains navy regs for his crew. These are the leaders that sailors respect and would follow them into any battle. That is leadership. If you prefer the little robots Got help you!
