Johansen Named Head Coach of U.S. Olympic Diving Team

INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive Olympic Games, Indiana head diving coach Drew Johansen has been selected as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Diving Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, USA Diving announced on Monday.

“I am so proud to represent not only USA Diving, but the great tradition of diving at Indiana University,” Johansen said. “So many great divers contributed to keeping the Olympic tradition alive in Blooming. Past, present and future.”

Under Johansen at the Olympic Games London 2012, the United States took home one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. The four medals were the most for Team USA in diving since the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988.

In the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Team USA recorded three medals: two silver and one bronze.

In total, Johansen has coaches six different athletes to the Olympic games, five of which made their first games as an undergraduate. Team USA has achieved seven total medals in his previous two Olympics.

Johansen helped place, three Hoosier divers, in the Olympics after a successful week at the Olympic Trials. Two-time defending NCAA 3-Meter Champion and current IU student-athlete Andrew Capobianco will compete in both the 3-meter Springboard and 3-meter Synchro events. He will be joined by former Indiana All-American Mike Hixon in the 3-meter Synchro event. Indiana alumnus and NCAA 10-meter Platform Champion Jessica Parratto will join forces with Delaney Schnell in the 10-meter Synchro event.

The Olympic Games 2020 Tokyo begin on July 23.
