IS IT TRUE MAY 7, 2019

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way.

IS IT TRUE today the candidates that participated in the intra-party primary will see how effective their speech-making, door-to-door campaigning and political adverting were?

IS IT TRUE The City-County Observer is beginning to see some positive changes coming to Evansville?  …those changes are within local party politics and they have been needed for decades?

IS IT TRUE In today’s primary, the voters are blessed to have a combination of the experienced incumbent and political newcomers to choose from?  …we are hopeful that the entitlement mentality, political patronage, nepotism practices will become a thing of the past?   …It’s our hope that starting today a new generation of political leaders will emerge that will practice ‘Good Public Policy?”

IS IT TRUE we are at the crossroads for building a progressive future for Evansville, and if we do not choose fiscally responsible and forward-thinking candidates we will all pay the price for their folly.?  …Please choose wisely when you vote today in the Republican and Democratic primaries?

IS IT TRUE we thank all the candidates who felt the need to run for public office in order to make Evansville a better place to live, work and raise a family?

IS IT TRUE that the final decision whom we shall be put on the November general ballot is now in your hands and we urge you to please choose wisely.

IS IT TRUE that it is time for all civic-minded Hoosiers who want to have a say in who gets nominated to get off of their butts and go vote in todays primary? …Often primaries are neglected and that is part of the reason that we always are choosing between a fool and a joker when the real election day comes in November?…in the past Evansville has suffered from staggeringly low primary turnouts with less than 10% of eligible voters choosing to cast a ballot?

IS  IT TRUE even when the stakes are higher in a Mayoral race there are often no more than 20% of eligible voters who bother to exercise their right to self-governance? …this time around it looks like the city of Evansville Mayoral election is going to be effectively unopposed for the second time in recent history?…that friendly and somewhat possible Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is looking like a shoo-in for a third term as no Democrat has tossed their hat into the ring?…even if someone from a third, fourth, or fifth party decides to play the election game, Mayor Winnecke is poised to become the first 3 term mayor in a long long time?

IS IT TRUE that it has only happened one other time and that was when Frank McDonald Sr. was elected to three consecutive terms starting in 1960 and ending in 1972 when a Republican avalanche took the place over?…it just so happens that the highest population recorded by a census in Evansville, it was in 1960 when Big Frank took over?…the population then was over 144,000 and today it sits stagnant at 117,000 and that includes a lot of annexed areas that were not in the boundaries of 1960?…some would easily conclude that the start of the decline of Evansville started in 1960?

IS IT TRUE that one Hoosier is making big news these days and the name of the person is Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend?… South Bend much like Evansville is an old blue collar town that has been passed over by the modern economic expansions?… Mayor Pete as Buttigieg is called was first elected Mayor in 2011 by winning 11,991 votes in a town of about 110,000 people?… Mayor Pete was reelected in 2015 in an Evansville style no contest election with a whopping 8,515 votes?…he has cleverly parlayed those 8,515 votes into a marketing genius that has him sitting in 3rd place nationally for the Democrat nomination for President of the United States?…it is truly ironic that a small city mayor who got less than 10% of his constituents’ votes is making a serious run at the White House?…it is even more ironic since South Bend is a less scenic place outside of the beautiful Notre Dame campus?…when the national news comes to South Bend, it may tank Mayor Pete’s chances because most of the country does not want to be like South Bend?… Mayor Pete did make some good decisions as Mayor though since he chose blight elimination and sewer repairs over the Evansville way of fun and games followed by more fun and games?…who knows, if former Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel had concentrated on blight and infrastructure instead of a hockey rink, he may be in the discussion for President as the dearly departed Democrat Strongman Larry Aiken said he could?

IS IT TRUE that another CCO staff member went to “AMY’S ON FRANKLIN” on Saturday night and was also impressed by his incredible steak, service, and atmosphere? …he predicts that “AMY’S ON FRANKLIN” will quickly become one of the area’s favorite places for people to take their family and friends to wine and dine?

FOOTNOTES: Todays “Readers’ Poll” question is: How are you planning to vote in today’s election primary?
