Gilliland Named Finalist For Honda Sport Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore diver and repeat NCAA platform national champion Tarrin Gilliland is one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award, the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards (CWSA) executive director Chris Voelz announced on Monday (April 18).

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network.

The Honda Sport award winner for swimming & diving will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

Gilliland is the first-ever Indiana diver to be nominated for the award. Swimmer Lilly King was a finalist in four straight seasons (2016-19) and became the fourth Hoosier to win the prestigious honor in 2019, joining Michelle Dekkers (Cross Country, 1988-89), Kim Betz (Cross Country, 1987-88) and Heather Crowe (Tennis, 1981-82).

The 2022 CSCAA Diver of the Year won her second straight NCAA platform diving national title in March, making her just the second woman ever to win back-to-back platform titles as a freshman and sophomore, joining Stanford’s Eileen Richetelli (1992-93).

At the national meet, Gilliland was one of two divers to qualify for all three championship finals, bringing her career All-America total to the maximum six through two seasons. Gilliland also took bronze in the 3-meter dive with a career-best 382.00.

A month earlier, Gilliland placed top-five in all three events at the Big Ten Championships. Gilliland posted career bests in the 1-meter (324.24), placing fourth, and on platform (382.80) to win her first-career conference title in the event. She scored a 369.40 on the 3-meter springboard to grab bronze.

On January 26, Gilliland was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week after placing first on the 1-meter springboard (316.58) and platform (304.58).

At USA Diving Winter Nationals in December, Gilliland punched her ticket to the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in two events, winning both the mixed synchronized platform dive, with IU teammate Carson Tyler, and the women’s event with Arizona’s Delaney Schnell.

The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
