Senior names MVC Defensive Player of the Week

In a weekend that saw her average 6.86 digs per set, University of Evansville redshirt senior Gabriela Macedo was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week.  It is the second time Macedo has received the honor in 2019.

“Gabi has been working hard to get wins and she knows the more balls she digs the more chances we will have to score points,” Aces coach Fernando Morales said.  “She does whatever she needs to do to put us in position to win matches and she is doing a great job.”

Macedo increased her league-leading dig average to 5.79 per set as UE earned its first conference weekend road sweep since 2000.  Macedo opened the week with 16 digs, three assists and three service aces in a 3-0 sweep at Southern Illinois.

She was even better on Saturday, registering 32 digs and two more aces at Missouri State.  For the week, she averaged 6.86 digs, posting 48 over the course of seven sets.  She had five service aces and four assists.  Her season dig average is now 6th in the nation.

Her efforts helped the Aces earn their first MVC weekend road sweep since 2000.  Next up is a home weekend when UE plays host to Drake and UNI at Meeks Family Fieldhouse.  Evansville takes on the Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m. before welcoming the Panthers at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
