A $25,000 donation to SWIRCA & More by American Senior Communities will help the organization open a new Wellness Center that will provide meaningful activities and health benefits to thousands of southern Indiana seniors.

In addition to the donation, ASC will also provide other resources for the Wellness Center, including a staff member who will provide blood pressure screenings. The Wellness Center will be based in SWIRCA’s Activities Center.

Over the last several months, SWIRCA (Southwestern Indiana Regional Council on Aging) has endured several budget cuts. The most recent cut of $23,450 in city funding has caused the organization to initiate a $30 annual membership fee for seniors to participate in the many services SWIRCA provides. Meal service was also reduced to four days a week.

“In 18 months, we lost over $300,000 in federal, state and local funding,” said Keith Gander, who is vice president of development. “We have to now figure out ways to raise additional funds.  This donation will help so much.”

The check presentation will be at 9:30 a.m., March 9 at the facility, located at 16 West Virginia Ave., Evansville.

SWIRCA, an Indiana Agency on Aging, provides a variety of nutritional and social activities and fitness programs at its 20 locations in six southern Indiana counties. The locations are in Posey, Gibson, Warrick, Spencer, Perry and Vanderburgh counties.

Activities include exercise classes, dances, cards and bingo, health fairs and a variety of other events. “Keeping them active is our goal to keeping them independent,” said Gander.

American Senior Communities operates 10 senior health and memory care facilities in the area. They are Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation, Park Terrace Village, Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center, Willowdale Village, Columbia Healthcare Center, North Park Nursing Center, Good Samaritan Home and Rehabilitation Center, Timbers of Jasper, Eastgate Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Prairie Village Nursing and Rehabilitation.
