Braun Brushes Off GOP Concerns

The IBJ-The Rundown by Lindsey Erdody

Despite a story this week from the AP that there is growing concern among members of the Republican Party that their candidate for U.S. Senate, Mike Braun, isn’t out on the campaign trail enough, Braun says he’s not worried.

When initially asked at a campaign event on Wednesday about the article and whether he thinks there is a lack of enthusiasm among the party base, Braun said that wasn’t the case in Indiana, at least.

“I can tell you that the energy level is high,” Braun said. “We couldn’t be in better shape.”

When pressed on the issue and whether he would increase the number of public events he’s attending, Braun criticized the AP reporter who wrote the story.

“Who is writing that? I think a liberal reporter from up north,” Braun said. “I’ve been out on the trail from sun up to sun down now for 11 months through the primary and the general.”

Braun’s campaign told the AP he has held 80 public events since the primary, but Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly has held more than 190 campaign events since May. And that’s while Donnelly flies back and forth between Indiana and Washington, D.C. Braun resigned from his seat in the state Legislature to focus on his campaign.

But Braun is confident in his denial.

“I’ll outmaneuver Joe Donnelly any day, and I’m out here doing it, so that’s not true,” he said Wednesday.
