After exploring many options, Swirca is forced to close three local meal sites due to a reduction of over $175,000 in State and Federal funding this year. The final day of operation will be Friday, January 16th. The three meal sites affected are:
- Kennedy Towers,
- Schnute, and
- White Oak Apartments
Swirca will provide Option Counselors on site, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10-11 am to assist residents in seeking additional resources. For residents that qualify, they will have the option of receiving Home Delivered meals from Swirca’s nutrition program.
Rhonda Zuber, President of SWIRCA & More states “Closing meal sites are a last resort. Funding levels have not been reestablished since last year’s sequestration funding cuts and we are no longer able to absorb the cost. The reduction in funding, decreased nutrition donations, and increases in food prices have all hampered our ability to continue operating at the level we would like to.â€
As a whole Swirca’s nutrition program serves an average of ¼ million meals annually with a suggested donation amount of $3.50. The average donation is currently $.97 and they do not turn anyone away for the inability to pay.
Swirca will continue local fundraising efforts and will increase education to those in the community with the hopes of securing additional funding to keep the program going and offset cost. In the meantime, community members that are in need are encouraged to call the Resource Center at 1-866-400-0779
SWIRCA & More is a not for profit organization fulfilling a mission of “Enhancing Opportunities for Independent Living.â€Â SWIRCA & More focuses its efforts on empowering individuals of all ages to remain living safely in their own homes by providing information and supportive services to older adults, persons with disabilities, and their caregivers.
This affects mostly low income older residents that have little or no income. With all the wasted money in government you would think they could feed the senior citizens.
All the articles seem to be incomplete and trying for sympathy for the Council on
Aging. If they don’t set up a bulk feeding station there i’m sure the meals on wheels people will take care of them. The C&P article pointed out the biggest problem. The recommended donation is $3.50 while the average donation is less than a dollar. There are some people going light on the deal.
And the righties have you convinced the free shit just keeps on coming and it’s so easy to be poor.
I wonder if the state would fund it if they drug tested them?
Look, these meals are mainly distributed to the elderly who don’t drive and cannot afford groceries. As our baby boomers are at an all time high, they are already forced to work longer than anticipated. My grandmother needed this program. She lived on less than a 600.00 pee month SS check. The only thing that kept her adloat was not that her husband left her the house, but only allowed for her to live there until her death! She worked around her house like a woman in her 20 ‘ s and until hwr death. We took her to the store and I’m proud I was around for her but even in 1996, living on that amt was unheard of! These people don’t need drug testing. They go thru a demeaning ordeal to receive these meals. Drug test the welfare and Medicaid recipients! I can’t work and we live a, month behind every month. Why? Because I chose to marry a man I love who happens to be 21 yrs older than me! I have no entitlement to his pension ever because we didn’t marry before his retirement. I pay over 300.00 per month for a life policy to have something. I’m terrified I’ll end up homeless. I lost everything financially at 43 due to heart disease that just keeps coming at me bit by bit. Medicaid recipients like a relative of mine who CHOSE alcohol over working only to live with his mother and not search for a job was declined disability. Why? There was nothing wrong with him outside one stent in his leg! Finally, he had tongue cancer. It’s very rare one gets this without smoking or drinking! He does both. So they didn’t consider his mom’s income and now he’s on medicaid and again a tumor. Gets a free ride from the government because he has cancer, gets the best medical care and benefits! I can’t work and it ticks me off that I’ve had to file bankruptcy over my medical bills and I wish I could work whereas this guy chose not to work and everything is given to him and YES, he still smokes! These are the very people that should be forced to stop smoking and drinking. I’d be the first in line if they so choose to check me and I can get free medical and meds, food stamps etc. Because I care about my body but I can’t change my DNA! THESE ELDERLY NEED GO FOOD
Rhonda Heathcott—Hate, jealosy, and venom. That is you!
Sorry–that would correctly be “jealousy”
You Jim Moffitt are the epitome of why I pray for people like you. Enemies are in need of my prayer, as much as those I hold close to my heart. The truth hurts, but then again, as you have assumed for 32 yrs, you place the verbally abusive language onto others. Don’t just last three be judged. God is my Lord and Savior, the facts may be here, albeit twisted indeed but I shan’t falL for your ever ending abuse, which had continued on for decades within my family. My rock is my Father, he goes by God, His son is Jesus Christ and those who believe in me, well that’s their choice I know who I am, and I won’t allow you nor anyone bring me to such levels of abuse. The system is messed uo, but you choose to berate a private conversation that was hacked and placed on this site, solely to seek me out, because you and you lackeys have no better purpose in life, but to find the alleged bad on my good name, while I stand for good God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good. This is who I am and I sacrifice my Savior for no man
