The Indiana State Police join public safety agencies across Indiana with this final reminder on safety tips for New Year’s Eve:
· Party responsibly, don’t drink and drive
· Have a designated driver or plan to stay overnight at your party location
· A taxicab fare is thousands of dollars less than a DUI arrest or a funeral
· Do not fire guns in the air on New Year’s Eve or any other time of the year
o Gravity is not suspended on New Year’s Eve and bullets fired into the air will return to earth with sufficient force to cause death or property damage to whoever or whatever they strike
· If you are in the presence of a person who has excessively consumed alcohol and they become unresponsive, do not assume they will ‘sleep it off’
o Alcohol poisoning can cause death; seek emergency medical assistance for intoxicated persons that are unresponsive
o While persons under the age of 21 should not be consuming alcoholic beverages, they should not let this prevent them from seeking assistance for impaired youth
§ Youth who summon help for an impaired juvenile are immune from prosecution for minor consuming alcohol when they stay with the intoxicated youth and cooperate with law enforcement responding to the scene
