6 Tips For Tax Professionals To Keep Your Data Safe

With so many people working remotely these days, National Tax Security Awareness Week (NTSAW) couldn’t come at a better time. Follow the below tips to help keep your clients’  information safe this upcoming tax filing season.

  • Learn to recognize and avoid phishing emails. Look for misspellings and bad grammar and never click on links or attachments from unknown or suspicious sources. Often these emails have a sense of urgency
  • Use multi-factor authentication. If available, set up your multi-factor authentication for accounts to inlcude a security code, phrase or question.
  • Use strong and unique passwords. Try to use different passwords for each account with a minimum of 10 characters.
  • Keep a clean machine. Use security software to protect against malware that may steal data and viruses that may damage files. Set it to update automatically so your device always has the latest security defenses.
  • Back up data on external sources. This means any source that is not connected to your network.
  • Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when working remotely. This provides a secure encrypted way for data to be transmitted from a remote user via the internet to the company network.
