Gov. Eric Holcomb announced last month that the state will be investing $189 million in expanding 154 broadband infrastructures across Indiana. This will impact 52,900 locations and marks the third round of the Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program.

This program is the largest state investment for broadband internet connection, beginning in 2018 to improve the connectivity of homes and businesses. Since 2018, over $580 million has been leveraged to meet this goal across 83 of Indiana’s 92 counties.

“This record-setting investment in broadband is another game changer for Hoosiers who now, more than ever, need affordable, reliable internet,” Holcomb said. “With this third round, we take giant steps in leveling the playing field for our residents regardless of where they choose to live, work or go to school.”

Broadband service providers and utility companies can request up to $5 million to improve their broadband strength and expand services. These requests will then be handled through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

The Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program is part of Holcomb’s $1 billion Next Level Connections infrastructure program. This program also focuses on completing major highway projects, railways and nonstop flights. After the initial $100 million was dedicated to broadband expansion, an additional $250 million was set aside.

In the state of Indiana, 12.4% of citizens go without adequate broadband internet connection, and 48.4% live in areas where only one service provider is present, meaning that bandwidths and connections may not be as stable. This inequality became more significant as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which sent many students and employees home to work.
