MEET COUNTY COUNCILMAN MIKE GOEBEL
The citizens of Vanderburgh County are blessed to have many quality people serving in elected and appointed positions.  One such individual is Mike Goebel. Goebel is a Democratic member of the Vanderburgh County Council of Vanderburgh County. He is a lifelong resident of Vanderburgh County and is one of 17 children. He graduated from Mater Dei High School. He graduated with a bachelor degree from USI in 1974, and masters degree from Indiana State University.
Goebel was an extremely successful head wrestling coach at Mater Dei and retired from coaching that sport in 2007. Mike wrestling teams win and lose record at Mater Dei have a phenomenal combined record of 533-14-2 in head to head matches which is a National Record for winning percentage.  He is considered one of the most successful high school wrestling coach in the state of Indiana. Goebel has an elusive 29 City Championships, 29 Sectional Titles, 29 Regional Titles, 22 Semi-State Titles, and 12 State Titles with 1 runner-up. He was the National Coach of the Year in 2003 for the National Wrestling Coaches and was also their Indiana State Coach of the Year 5 times.8 time coach of the year for the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association. In 2005 Goebel won the Billy Thom Award. Goebel was the NFICA National Coach of the Year in 1999.
He is now the head football coach at his alumni of Mater Dei High School. As a football coach, Goebel has won 4 City Championships, 4 SIAC Championships, 9 Sectional Titles, 6 Regional Titles, 3 Semi-State Titles, and 1 State Championship. Goebel’s team captured the State Title in 2000, and overall he has a 148-46 record as a head coach in football.
Goebel was awarded an Indiana Fitness Award by Senator Lugar, the Citizen of the Year Award by the Westside Civitan Club, the Spirit Award by the Tri-State Multiple Sclerosis Society, as well as being the recipient of a Scholarship from the Fulbright United States Scholar Committee. In 1987 Goebel was elected into the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 2004 Goebel was elected to the Vanderburgh County Council.
During his third (3) term as County Councilmen, he ran for Indiana State House District 75. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary election but was defeated by Ron Bacon (R) in the general election.
County Councilman Goebel is very passionate about providing county services to residents of the county while staying within the budget. He is known for his no-nonsense and fair approach to running county government while listening to the concerns of the residents of Vanderburgh County. He governing style is that he makes decisions regardless of political party affiliation.
HIs main focus is to ensure that the county doesn’t spend money on unnecessary items so he can provide the county services within a balanced budget. He encourages long-term planning in order to promote stable economic growth. He understands how important it is to maintain our roads, streets, and bridges. Finally, he’s a strong supporter of the funding for our law enforcement and judicial systems, especially the proposed renovation of the county jail within the budget restraints.
