WESSELMAN PARK INFRASTRUCTURE GROUNDBREAKING YESTERDAY
(November 30, 2023) – Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Deputy Mayor / Interim Parks Director Steve Schaefer will break ground yesterday, Wednesday, November 29thon new infrastructure at Wesselman Park
As laid out in the Wesselman Park Master Plan, new infrastructure is critical to lay the foundation for future projects.
The groundbreaking will initiate work on the following:
- The new main entrance to Wesselman Park off of Boeke Road
- Connector Road linking Wesselman Park with the Roberts Festival Grounds
- Extension of Division Street that will provide another entry point to the athletic fields behind the National Guard Armory
Deputy Mayor Schaefer will also provide an update on various projects included in the Wesselman Park Master Plan.
The ceremony will take place at 10:00 am in the grass area of the future Roberts Festival Grounds (site of the former Roberts Stadium).
The project is currently under contract with Deig Bros and is expected to be completed in August of 2024.

I spoke at City Council and Board of Park Commissioners meetings about my disagreement to moving forward with moving dirt on these projects so close to us having a new mayor. It became clear anything the administration started could be looked at as a “mandate†for the that mayor to finish “their planâ€. I suggested the new administration may have ideas of their own for Wesselman and Roberts Parks. Seems Deig Bros has the contract and there was a ceremony, however, construction hasnt begun. its not too late for Mayor Elect Terry to revisit the Winnecke plan handed to her and have a look at what she may want to see. Having the groundbreaking on Steve Schaefers last day was in poor taste.
Agree with you completely Mr. Nichols.
I also agree. The “Robert’s Festival†site is a joke. The “site†was barely mowed during the first half of Winnecke’s mayoral reign. Of all the city departments that have had unwanted attention the PARKS DEPARTMENT had a “ground breaking†ceremony? Hilarious. I keep reading that Evansville is broke but the country club fund raising folks are breaking ground on a huge eyesore 5 minutes before they move on to their next high paying jobs. Typical Evansville. Let the middle class fight over overpriced housing and few job opportunities for our kids while you start Yet Another Useless Overpriced Project.
Once again we see negative comments on anything that improves our community. This project has been in planning stages forever, acquiring grant funding from Feds and state and local support. Please stop the non-sense, we need that space to move forward, we need space for families, stop living in the past and realize evansville has leaders that can lead.
Perhaps PM should reread my post. I never said to not do it. I said since our new mayor will be deal with most of the construction of the “Winnecke/Schaefer “ wish list, its only fair she have a few months to put her touches on the park she will have control over.
