(Evansville, Indiana – October 9, 2024)

The Vanderburgh Humane Society is collaborating with Best Friends Animal Society to eventually accept pets displaced from Hurricane Milton.

To prepare for these pets’ arrival, VHS is launching an emergency fee-waived adoption special AND plea for foster parents effective immediately, Wednesday, October 9th. FREE adoptions apply to every available pet in the VHS’ care: dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, small animals, and cats at River Kitty Cat Cafe. The shelter currently has more than 400 pets available.

Browse pets and apply for adoption here: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/adopt/the-adoption-process.

If families cannot commit to adoption at this time, temporary fosters are also needed. ALL expenses including food are covered for VHS-affiliated foster families. Link to foster information & applications: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/get-involved/foster.

Please note that families will be adopting or fostering CURRENT pets here locally, to make space for displaced hurricane pets. The pets from the hurricane are not here yet and cannot be transported here until space is made.

Things are already dire in the animal sheltering field nationwide, and the VHS is pleading for the community to step up and help in this crisis to save more lives.

Those who cannot adopt or foster may make a monetary donation to cover the costs of daily animal care at https://give.vhslifesaver.org or by calling 812-426-2563 ext. 214.
