Vectren coal costs and electric rates may return to the news

Even though the story of Vectren’s coal costs and electric rates has repeatedly been covered by Evansville media outlets over the last several years, the Indianapolis Star has taken interest in these older contracts that are no longer in place and plans to print a story this Sunday.

We have always been very transparent on our coal purchases for our electric business. While Vectren Fuels, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vectren, provides the majority of coal for Vectren’s two power plants in southwest Indiana, they won the bid through RFP processes with regulatory oversight and support. Vectren Fuels also supplies coal to various other electric utilities as the mines are located in southern Indiana within 50 miles of approximately 13 coal-fired power plants, making transportation costs very attractive.

Earlier this year I shared with you the driving force behind Vectren’s electric rates – environmental investments. In an effort to help our region achieve attainment status for air quality measures, and open the door for economic development, we added $410 million in environmental control equipment at both of our coal-fired power plants ahead of any EPA mandates. These efforts proved successful and today, the region is in attainment and southwest Indiana is breathing cleaner air. Click here to see Vectren’s story.

We always welcome the opportunity to discuss our rates or provide an overview of our businesses.

My question would be: Did VECTREN ever award one of those coal contracts to Vectren Fuels, even though a competing company submitted a lower bid?

  2. Thanks, Mike. We’ll be thinking about you this winter as we freeze to death in our homes due to your firm’s confiscatory rates. Your company is one of the most expensive electric utilities on Planet Earth. Your company is literally the Grinch that kills Christmas every damned year.

    Thanks for Nothing!

  3. Mike, words cannot express how sick that made me to watch you go in front of the Parks Board and tell them that as a member of the ECVB you support the dog park plan as a way of boosting tourism on a lot that has an already paid for arena sitting on it just waiting for mid-sized events to fill its schedule. Even Winnecke himself isn’t trying to claim this is going to bring in tourists.

Did you or anyone else at the ECVB even evaluate the situation? Did you even bother to investigate the amount of visitors the Hoosier Cup, USI preseason tournaments, and over 100 trade shows just to name a few would do for the hotel industry? Or did you just go up there and take the stand because Winnecke told you to be there?

That performance begs the question: If you and the ECVB won’t stand up for mid-sized events that put heads in beds what makes anyone believe that you and Vectren are going to be looking out for rate payers?

And I would also like to know if you and the ECVB plan on giving the same half-baked effort that on the ball fields project that you gave on Roberts. I’m beginning to wonder if the Dunn era ever left the ECVB.

You and the rest of the ECVB need to pick it up and get your heads out of your tails.

  5. Mr. Roeder you started this dicussion by writing and posting this letter. Now it time for you to defend your public relations political spin letter.

Please man up and answer the above questions.
