University of Southern Indiana Softball senior outfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week in an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.
Webb began the year with a .500 batting average, three runs scored, two doubles, a home run and five RBI during the No. 16 Screaming Eagles’ opening weekend.
She began the weekend with a 1-for-3 effort in USI’s 2-1, game-one loss to Wingate University before going 1-for-3 with two RBI in USI’s 8-7 win over the Bulldogs in game two.
Webb followed that performance by going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a two-run home run in USI’s 8-3 loss to No. 2 University of North Georgia. Her two-run home run, which came against UNG’s Kylie Smith, one of the top pitchers in the nation, gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead that they would take into the bottom of the sixth inning of their game-one loss to the Nighthawks.
After going 2-for-3 with an RBI in USI’s game-two loss to North Georgia, Webb ended the weekend with another strong effort in USI’s 6-4 loss to No. 5 Young Harris College. She went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored against the Mountain Lions.
In total against North Georgia and Young Harris, Webb went a combined 6-for-10 at the plate with a double, home run and three RBI.
Webb, who had a .813 slugging percentage on the weekend, has now hit safely in nine straight games dating back to the end of the 2020 season. This marks the first GLVC weekly award for Webb, who is the first USI Softball Player of the Week since Claire Johnson ’19 in 2019.
USI returns to action Saturday at noon when it takes on Midwest Region foe Cedarville University at the Blue Bridge Battle at the Kentucky Legend Fields in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Eagles also play Lake Erie College Saturday at 2 p.m. before finishing the weekend against Northwood University and Kentucky Wesleyan College Sunday at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
