USI Men’s Soccer hits the road for a pair

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer hits the road for the first time in 2020-21 with visits to Lewis University Friday in Romeoville, Illinois, and the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday in Springfield, Illinois. Kick off at Lewis is slated for 5:30 p.m., while start time at Illinois Springfield is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

FAN NOTE: Fans are allowed to attend athletic events at Lewis University by following the guidelines found on the Lewis University website (Link). Illinois Springfield is not allowing visiting fans at this time.

Following the season opener the first road trip of the season, USI returns home to host Quincy University March 12 and Truman State University March 14 at Strassweg Field (USI Fan Attendance Policy).

Week 2 – Eagle GLVC Notes: 
USI stumbles in opener: The Eagles stumbled in the season opener, falling to the University of Indianapolis, 2-1. USI fell behind in the opening half before sophomore forward Zach Barton knotted the match, 1-1, with his first goal of the season early in the second half. The Greyhounds would get the eventual game-winner 30 seconds later and held on for the win.

Santoro needs one to break: Head Coach Mat Santoro needs one win to surpass former Head Coach Tony Colavecchia for the all-time lead in wins for the USI men’s soccer program. Santoro, who has a 97-82-21 overall record at the helm, has guided the Eagles to a pair of NCAA II Tournament appearances; the 2018 GLVC regular season crown, and six GLVC Tournament appearances during his tenure. Colavecchia was 97-59-11 (.614) between 1988 and 1995.

Faas in the USI record book: Senior goalkeeper Justin Faas ranks fifth all-time at USI in shutouts, one behind a tie for third (Kyle Penick, 2002-05; Adam Zehme (2014-17) and third in goals against average.

Lewis this spring:  Lewis is off to a rough start this spring, falling twice during the opening weekend. The Flyers started the year with a 1-0 loss at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and finished the first weekend with a 2-0 loss at McKendree University.

USI versus Lewis: USI leads the all-time series with Lewis, 24-23-2, after getting a 1-0 decision over the Flyers at Strassweg Field in 2019. The Eagles have been in control of the series since 2014, going 5-1-1 in the last seven matches with the Flyers.

Illinois Springfield this spring: Illinois Springfield got off to a strong start this spring with a 1-0 win home win over Lindenwood University before concluding the first weekend with a 0-0 double-overtime tie at UMSL.

USI versus Illinois Springfield: USI has an 11-4-1 lead in the all-time series with Illinois Springfield after posting a 3-0 win in 2019. The Eagles have won the last five matches with the Prairie Stars, including a pair of wins on the road.
