The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team begins the defense of its share of the 2018 GLVC regular season title Sunday when it hosts McKendree University at Strassweg Field. Match time is scheduled for noon and coverage can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.
This Sunday’s USI men’s and women’s soccer games will be played in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Dill, a child of the USI Family who tragically lost his life this past summer. All ticket proceeds will be donated to a selected charity in Ollie’s name.
USI’s first homestand of the season extends through September 20 when the University of Indianapolis visits Strassweg Field for a 5 p.m. match-up.
Week 1 Eagle Notes:Â
The 2018 Crown:Â The Eagles and the Bearcats of McKendree shared the 2018 GLVC regular season crown with Truman State University at the end of last season. The share of the GLVC regular season title was a first in program history for USI.
USI starts 2019 with two wins:Â USI won its opening games of the season, posting a 5-0 win over Purdue University Northwest at home and a 4-0 victory on the road at Walsh University.
Unbeaten Streak Extended:Â USI extended its unbeaten streak to 10 matches after starting the year with a pair of wins. The Eagles finished last season with seven-straight wins, tying a school record, and a tie in the GLVC Tournament with Rockhurst University (Rockhurst advanced over USI in the GLVC Tournament due to penalty kicks).
Winter named GLVC Player of the Week: USI junior forward Maggie Winter was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the team with seven points in two matches on three goals and one assist. Winter had a goal in the win over Purdue Northwest and a pair of goals and an assist in the victory at Walsh.
Climbing the record book: Junior forward Maggie Winter is starting to climb the USI record book categories, moving into the top 10 in points (37) and remaining 11th in goals scored (14), one away from entering the top 10.
Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 31-19-7 mark (.605), a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.
USI vs. McKendree:Â McKendree leads the all-time series, 9-5-1, after winning the regular season match last fall, 2-1, in double overtime. The Bearcats also have won the last five regular season meetings.
McKendree in 2019:Â Â The Bearcats split their opening weekend at home, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-2, and falling to Ohio Dominican University, 1-0.
USI vs. Indianapolis:Â The Greyhounds lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 12-11-1, despite USI winning on the road last year in overtime, 3-2. The Eagles and the Greyhounds have split the last five games with two wins each and a tie.
UIndy in 2019:Â Â UIndy, who host Bellarmine University Sunday before visiting USI on September 20, won its first two matches in convincing fashion. The Greyhounds defeated the University of Wisconsin Parkside, 4-1, and Purdue Northwest, 4-0, on the road during the opening weekend.
