USI’s Guy notches provisional mark in mile

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.—Senior All-American Johnnie Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) recorded an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the mile to lead the No. 14 University of Southern Indiana men’s track & field team in its Indoor season-opener Saturday at the Little Giant Open.

Guy finished first in the event with a time of four minutes, 15.22 seconds, less than a second ahead of fellow classmate and All-American Tyler Pence (Springfield, Illinois), who was second with a time of 4:16.11. Junior Josh Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) also posted a top-five finish in the event as he crossed the tape in fourth place.

As a team, the Screaming Eagles recorded nine top-five performances on the day, with junior thrower Micheal Hammonds (Evansville, Indiana) finishing with second-place efforts in both the shot put and the weight throw.

Sophomores Jesse Stanley (Chandler, Indiana) and James Cecil (Owensboro, Kentucky) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 meters, while freshmen Aaron Pierrard (Cannelton, Indiana) and Tyler Kruse (Fort Branch, Indiana) were third and fifth, respectively, in the 800 meters. Junior Jalen Madison (Washington, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles’ top-five efforts with a fourth-place showing in the weight throw.

USI returns to action January 22-23 when it competes at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana, and the University of Indianapolis Collegiate Invitational in Indianapolis.
