BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Young Carson Tyler is a world medalist.
Fresh off his freshman season for Indiana swimming and diving, Tyler secured his first senior medal Friday (July 1) at the 19th FINA World Championships in Budapest, winning bronze in mixed synchronized 10-meter diving with USA Diving teammate Delaney Schnell.
“Carson had a great ending to his first experience on the world stage,†IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. “His composure and confidence in himself and his training was that of a veteran diver.â€
The pairing was consistent through their five dives, earning a top-five score in each round. Tyler and Schnell finished with a flourish, scoring 69.30, 79.68 and 73.92 in each of their final three dives.
Team USA just missed out on a silver medal, finishing just 1.11 points behind runner-up Ukraine. China took gold with a score of 341.16.
Tyler and Schnell qualified for worlds after becoming national champions in the event at USA Diving Winter Nationals in December with a score of 268.62. Earlier this week, Tyler also competed individually on the men’s 3-meter springboard, finishing 31st (346.75).
Tyler had a fantastic first year at IU, qualifying for all three diving events in the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships where he placed 12th in platform diving and 18th and 27th, respectively, on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. At the Big Ten Championships, he won bronze in platform diving with a 440.90.
For IU, it’s the program’s fourth medal at this year’s world championships as former IU swimmer Lilly King won three gold medals earlier in the competition. With a victory in the 200-meter breaststroke race, King became the first American swimmer to win a career of gold medals in the 50, 100 and 200-meter events of one stroke at the long course world championships.
Indiana swimming and diving sent 13 athletes and two coaches to Budapest for this year’s championships, with the group representing seven countries. Women’s diver Kristen Hayden, who finished 13th in the women’s 3-meter event on Friday, will cap IU’s appearances in the competition as she takes on the women’s synchronized 3-meter event Sunday (July 3).
