The Truth About the Anemic Voter Turnout

Dinosaur Machine Death Rattle

The Percentage of People Voting Increased Over 2007 by over 64%, voters increased by 84%

From the records of Susan Kirk, Vanderburgh County Clerk the following are undisputed facts:

In the 2007 primary election we had 82,834 registered voters. 5,070 people voted.

In the 2011 primary election we had 92,547 registered voters. 9,310 people voted.

Thus 6.12% of registered voters cast ballots in the 2007 primaries while 10.06% of registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s 2011 primaries. That computes to a percentage increase of 64.38%.

The actual number of people who cast ballots increased by a total of 4,240 votes or 83.63%.

These indisputable facts should be absorbed by those supporters of the winners in the 2007 primaries who are stating that Tuesday’s low turnout is the reason for their slate of candidates for the most part being defeated in 2011.

  1. Was there no exit polling?

Question: Was your ticket a referendum on the Weinzapfel botch-fest? (The Executive Inn issue, McCurdy issue, Subsidized high end condos, Bank on Evansville, Front door pride, Atrocious SMG management, Gage, No bid contract scandals, Sewer lawsuit debacle, Whirlpool leaving – moving to Mexico and Tennessee – while increasing profits, Hypodermic needles getting the silent treatment, Selective media disclosures, etc?)

I bet it’s more painful when you look at the party line breakdown.

So, Mr. Owen, the focus will soon be on your lifetime, ahem, “achievement” award ceremony… (I hope you didn’t engrave the trophies pre-election)

  2. The problem with your analysis is that you are comparing apples to oranges. There was no primary for the mayor’s race in 2007. You have to go back to 1999 for a Democrat primary in the mayor’s race. In 1999, using the Courier & Press’ numbers from a February article, 13% of the registered voters voted. This year, using your numbers, only 10% voted. Nothing would have stopped Rick Davis from winning, however, I don’t think a comparison to 2007 is appropriate.

    • Actually it seems more like comparing apples to rotten apples but we agree with your point. The City of Evansville website only has results back to 2007 or we would have gone further. 10% or 13 % both say apathy on the part of voters. Here is the funniest thing we found in our checking. The City of Evansville has links to results labelled:

      2010 Results
      2009 Results
      2008 Results
      2007 Resluts

Now we know that when you have to fix something after working it you can say that you rework it. What do you do before you Reslut something. The terrible thing is that has probably been there for 4 years and either no one noticed or everyone just “let it slide”.

And the inattention to detail that this administration makes an artform of is why the budget for the arena is not accurate, the hotel has tanked again, and why Resluts is on the website for 4 years without change.

      • I don’t see 10% – 13% as being apathetic really. Compare those percentages to straight party ticket voting in the fall. Independents don’t seem interested in interparty voting, it seems. Not apathetic … just don’t care to participate in party politics.

  3. Sittin’ 1000 miles south and wondering what the hey (?) has occured in my home city, since I moved.. I can really see things in a open mess.. Maybe I should have stayed home to watch fireworks… Rick and Lloyd, best to the both of you….. At least it’s not ‘shut up and let the experts tell you who will run your town’ and ‘be good little voters and vote for who we tell you to!’…. If Dan Adams were a few years younger, I’d beg him to move up the ladder (very independent man and tells you what’s on his mind, like it or not)….. Oh well? Back to watching ol’folks havin’ fun and feelin’ 40, where as back home those 40ish folks feel like 80…. “Skip” in Naples…
