HSI brochure_2013

The 23rd Annual Deaconess/EVSC Health Science Institute is a rigorous, two-week summer program for high-achieving high school students in Southwestern Indiana who are interested in exploring healthcare careers. Deaconess Hospital in Evansville and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation partner to sponsor HSI with help from the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC).

HSI is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a wide variety of health careers first-hand. Students live on the main campus of Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for two weeks as they hear from 100+ health professionals, participate in 12 different clinical rotations (including witnessing surgery and hopefully a birth), and explore Deaconess facilities and local universities. Students register over 150 hours of seat time during the two weeks, and can earn one credit in Advanced Applied Science upon successful completion of HSI requirements.

Please share information about HSI with any student who may have an interest in a healthcare career, and feel free to forward this email as needed.

Over the past 22 years, more than 550 students have participated in the program; many are now serving in the healthcare field as physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and others. Testimonials from ten HSI alumni are at the end of this email. In 2012 25 students from Evansville high schools, Castle, Boonville, Mt. Vernon, North Posey, Gibson Southern, New Harmony, Pike Central, Forest Park, and Jasper participated in the program; students from Princeton, Wood Memorial, Tecumseh, and Tell City have participated in past years.

Attached to this email is an HSI application in PDF format; each high school in the ten counties in Southwestern Indiana should have received a supply of paper copies via mail recently. The application is also accessible at http://www.deaconess.com/hsi.

Students must be current sophomores or juniors in a Southwestern Indiana high school or home school in Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Perry, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, or Warrick counties who have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
