Staying Safe this Halloween

To prevent accidents, the Indiana State Police (ISP) encourages Hoosiers to practice the tips below.

• Keep costumes short to prevent trips and make sure children wear light colors or reflective tape.
• Make sure children of all ages trick-or-treat in groups and those under the age of 12 are accompanied by an adult.
• Map out a safe route for children to visit familiar homes so parents can predict their child’s location.
• Encourage children to trick-or-treat while it is still light outside. If children are out after dark, make sure they have flashlights and travel on well-lit sidewalks.
• Remind children not to eat any of their treats until they get home.
• Check all treats in a well-lit area at home and only eat unopened candies and other treats that are in their original wrappers.

ISP also encourages Hoosiers to partake in Halloween festivities during established neighborhood trick-or-treat times and at community events to prevent accidents and better maintain community safety.
