YESTERYEAR: Ross Theater
The Ross Theater is pictured here in 1993, shortly before it was razed. Debuting with fanfare on Christmas Day in 1949, its construction was prompted by the opening of Ross Center, an adjacent strip mall on Washington Avenue just east of Boeke Road. The plush theater opened with fanfare, featuring a marble foyer, colorful tapestry walls, a curved screen, and even free bottle warmers in the crying room. By the end of its run, the theater had become a bargain-priced movie house, but the original marquee, illuminated by a thousand light bulbs and neon tubing, remained intact.

I used to take my daughters and their friends to the Rocky Horror Show happenings in the late 80’s at the Ross. I would usually have to find something to do to kill time till they were over as none of the girls had DL’s yet. I even took them to a midnight showing once. That was a long night for me.
