I got off my bike – made my way in and ordered a cheeseburger and a Coke. The meal was delicious and was credited  in my youthful perspective – as having saved my life.
Forty-five years later I just had to stop and slip through that humble back entrance one more time. There – in a room antique in its’ own right
sat men at tables – some younger ones tanned from countless hours in the sun – some older with the appearance and demeanor that indicates ownership and authority. Couples were settled in and cozy. No cell phones were visible. They were all talking about their day.  Those not talking – were listening.
It was amazing!
Finding a table facing the bar – a friendly face soon asked “can I help you?” Without thinking I blurted out an order that could be  understood and fulfilled only in rare places these days. “A dressed cheeseburger and a beer” I said. She was gone in an instant.   Soon I was presented with a hand made – lovingly perfected delicacy that took me back 40 years. That burger had not changed!
