I see they are going to charge $5 to walk the trails in wesselman now. This means they will have to hire at least two people. Evan at minimum wage that comes to $50,000 a year. so unless we get 10,000 people paying a year this will actually lose money.
run it on the honor system, like we do with the city officials.
Good one!
At that $5.00 rate the hiking fee will probably be paid mostly in cash. Wonder who gets first count on the money? Does the SBOA have it in them to call anyone a thief? I think many of our local intrepid hikers will find a free spot for their treks. Can a fee to gaze upon the dog park be far behind? It’s what young professionals want, you know. Connected green space, that’s the ticket. Can Winnecke meter the foul air we breathe yet?
It is really UNBELIEVABLE.
The lack of substance and depth for those of you who invest their time, attention, scrutiny, interest and efforts….on Wesselmans admission fees and a low-level minor league HOCKEY team…..is laughable.
You are little kids. Chasing rabbits into the woods……or scrambling for meat scraps…..so you won’t pay attention to other things.
I can see it now:
1. Few people will pay to go to the nature center.
2. Winnecke will allow it to decay into a drug dealer’s mall.
3. It will be torn down, cleared and turned into section 8 housing. Fitting, because they’re are few, good paying manufacturing jobs left in Evansville. Thanks Weinzapfel and Winnecke. Winnecke gets a big pay off and the Evansville tax payers get screwed. Oh…drugs will be a high volume business on the east side, as well as the rest of Vanderburgh County.
So…Evansville deserves the SHIT that it elected!

If anything ever does get the public to focus a burning lens on this administration it will be things they can understand. Things like nickel-diming them for quality of life (to borrow Winnecke’s current sales pitch) aspects of living here that have been ‘free’ until now, before all those fancy buildings did us in.
…I don’t understand Bandana. Does the City control Wesselmans? Did the City decide to start charging an admission fee (for something that was provided free for years and years)? Did Mayor Winnecke do that?
(I’m trying to figure out Bandana….if somebody is pulling their guns too fast.
What does Wesselmans have to do w/ Winnecke?
You know. Kinda like George W. Bush…who started a war with Sadaam Hussien and invaded Iraq because a guy from Saudi Arabia who set up camp and operations in Afghanistan directed an attack on the US.)
Dear CC Editors
Hey, if you look above, you state your email address is as follows:
City-County Observer@live.com
This cannot be correct, because email does not allow a space to be used anywhere in the email name. So the single space between City-County and Observer is not possible.
Also, when I try to send to this address:
City-CountyObserver@live.com
It bounces back.
Finally, when I sent to this address:
CityCountyObserver@live.com
Which has no space and no hyphen, it went thru.
Can you please advise for sure what the email address needs to be?
Thanks
Classy
Thanks for the heads up. Problem has been corrected.
Thanks for supporting the CCO
Editor
Okay, you’ve corrected it. But you don’t say how you corrected it. Now would you please post the correct eMail address here.
Don,
I believe that Evansville does own/control Wesselman Woods. There is also a Director who probably works with the Parks Board. He was hired a few years ago to promote the Woods and to build all the new (and unnecessary) additions done recently which I believe are driving the entry fees that were just added. There is absolutely no overall planning in this town and therefore the only thing that exists is a bunch of beheaded chickens running helter skelter.
Also the city and the state does not value what they have in Wesselman Woods It is a national treasure and Winnecke wants to promote a ridiculously fluffy park experience in Wesselman Park and on the old Roberts ground. The architectural firm (guess who – rhymes with wafer) designed an over the top, unneeded park to change the nice local community park that Wesselman is and has always been. This when caring for our parks has become another issue in this town of many issues. I could go on but you get the idea.
…..but you are not addressing the issue Martha.
The question IS: did Mayor Winnecke and the City dictate the decision to begin charging an admission fee at Wesslemans? It is a local nonprofit trying to preserve original old growth woods….I thought.
I mean….if you are saying “Well, it IS in Evansville! And Winnecke is the Mayor of Evansville!!” Then….ok, then go ahead and stretch this that far.
OR MARTHA……are you trying to stretch a decision made by the Wesselman’s volunteer board to do what they think is right…..into some narrative about things you dislike about Winnecke?
(…..I mean, seriously Martha, I keep waiting for you to say, “Well Don. You are over 30. And the Mayor…he is over 30. So there! In fact, everybody over 30 is a thief and charges too much.”)
Don,
This is by my feeble memory now but as I recall from 5 years ago dealing with Wesselman Park and Woods and the ball field issue, the land that is now Wessleman Park and Woods was donated to the city of EVansville by the state for specific uses dealing with health and recreation. The woods was later designated as a national monument of some sort (I don’t think monument is the correct word but it has a national designation. Should have looked that up.) But it is still owned by the city which really sucks! So yes the city can do what it wants with the property and the national designation provides no protection. It is not owned or controlled by a local non-profit. Does that help?
Sorry Martha. This is public record! (And I notice you still won’t acknowledge Winnecke doesn’t establish the admission fees. Wesselman’s Nature Center and its governing board does. You’re mad at Winnecke. I get it. Taking a hatchet to the Nature Society to take out your anger over Winnecke is childish, infantile and foolish.)
Here is the truth:
“The Wesselman Nature Society (WNS) is a 501c(3) not-for-profit, environmental organization. We were founded in 1972 for the purpose of protecting the 200 acre tract in Evansville, Indiana now known as Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Today, the Society is responsible for the management and daily operations of Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, as well s our west side property, Howell Wetlands, as well as the Canoe Evansville program. The Society is governed by a member volunteer Board of Directors charged with ensuring the sustainability of our properties and the continued success of our programming, in keeping with our mission and strategic plan.”
Don,
I said specifically that the city owns the park and woods. Therefore the city set the entrance fees. You can call it Winnecke or you can call it the 501c3 or you can call it the city sewer system. I do not care. Sorry you are one of the members/board/director or whatever of Wesselman Woods 501c3. I don’t think that this group is doing a great job. I also do not think that Winnecke is doing a great job either. There! Does that spread the blame around enough for you? Also do not try to bait me again. I have bigger fish to fry than little old Evansville IN and I try to ignore it as much as possible. Please get a life and grow up. There is a whole world beyond the city limits.
Saw on the WFIE page that the City got a $2.5 million grant to tear down 18 “blighted” properties. That’s an average of about $139,000 EACH. Does anyone else find this to be a grossly inflated sum for removing an old, blighted house and throwing in a bit of dirt and grass seed???
Otto ,back in 2012 , taxpayers paid $7.6 million for the old safe house to be rebuilt into 32 units for homeless drug addicts, homeless veterans, generally people in need
A whopping 237.5 thousand dollars per unit ,,,for a apartment??
Forgot to include the link: http://www.14news.com/story/31489635/evansville-residents-reacting-to-blight-elimination-grant
“Transparency” would be good to show the “bids” for the demo of these properties. Would almost bet the “bids” would total $2,499,999.00 LOL.
Did anyone notice John Gregg’s article on transparency policy? Although it would to absolutely no good someone should send a copy to the mayor.
