“READERS FORUM” AUGUST 15, 2018

17

We hope that today’s “Readers Forum” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

HERES WHAT ON OUR MIND TODAY?

We are told that when the dock was built at Marina Pointe many years ago to house the LST, the Evansville City Council and the Vanderburgh County Commission donated several millions of dollars to construct it. The Evansville City Council just voted to move the LST down the river to Tropicana. Since the City of Evansville and the Vanderburgh County Commission were responsible in the funding and building the current LST boat dock at Marina Pointe.  We wonder shouldn’t both entities share the estimated $3 million dollar cost of dismantling it?

 WHATS ON YOUR MIND TODAY?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is: Should City Council have known who are paying the $3 million dollar costs to dismantle the dock at Marina Pointe before approving the move of the LST to the Tropicana area?

        https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/refugee-costs-88-billion-80-000-per-immigrant-free-welfare-medicaid

“As Americans continue to debate what to do about the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, this analysis attempts to estimate the costs of resettling refugees from that region in the United States. Although we do not consider all costs, our best estimate is that in their first five years in the United States each refugee from the Middle East costs taxpayers $64,370 — 12 times what the UN estimates it costs to care for one refugee in neighboring Middle Eastern countries. The cost of resettlement includes heavy welfare use by Middle Eastern refugees; 91 percent receive food stamps and 68 percent receive cash assistance….

Among the findings of this analysis:

On average, each Middle Eastern refugee resettled in the United States costs an estimated $64,370 in the first five years, or $257,481 per household.”

  1. Omarosa is giving Donald Trump fits, revealing how small and insignificant he is, and reminding us every day we do not have a Leader in the Oval Office, we have a pretender, a disgraceful reality-TV star, instead.

Trump created her. She is his mirror image. They are the same worthless, insecure trash diva’s.

Congratulations pretend to be Republican Trump fans. You should be proud.

      • ….never that great??? This is what the Democrat Party leadership believes about the United States.
        ……………………………………………
“New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may have just handed Republicans a ready-made campaign ad for his rumored 2020 presidential bid – by declaring Wednesday that America “was never that great.”

The Democratic star made the seemingly offhand remark as part of his rebuke of President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan during a New York speech. But the line drew gasps from the crowd.

“We’re not going to make America great again. It was never that great,” Cuomo said, to an awkward blend of gasps and chuckles. “

  2. The county will say, “when pigs fly”! This is now the city’s baby. I ask again, does this move need approval from the Army Corps of Engineers? I am sure you just can’t say we are putting the LST in the old gambling boat’s spot. Now, remember it is government which means permits, studies etc. etc. which means TIME. That equates to the cost of moving and dismantling going up everyday. $$$$$ bye bye.

  3. Why does the dock need to be dismantled? I would consider it an asset to stay in place for future boat dockage. Perhaps we could lure the riverboats to dock and passengers could be trolleyed to main street to shop. Henderson and Owensboro are doing this.

    • Great point! I thought the same thing. It doesn’t obstruct river traffic as the LST was stationed there for years with no issue.

      • Max Lingo and jpl hit the nail on the head. Exactly what I was thinking. The dock is an asset. Why the heck would they remove it? Makes no darn sense. Missy was right to vote “no”

        • In case you did not see these #s in the Courier on-line article. Almost $4 million seems like an awful lot of money to move a ship. Looks like the marina gets to keep a $3 million dock. So far a total of $7 million paid for the LST.

According to the mayor’s presentation, the total cost to relocate LST is nearly $3.9 million. With $1.1 million in diverse funding, the remaining cost is $2.76 million.

The Courier and Press reported in February that the Convention & Visitors Bureau endorsed a $175,000 grant for the relocation. Tropicana also contributed $1 million toward the relocation in 2015, according to City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr. The LST board is also contributing $175,000.

While some in the community have said allocating nearly $2.8 million to relocate a ship seems steep, the city spent about $3 million in 2005 on LST’s dock and barge set-up at Marina Pointe. Schaefer said the city also pays $40,000 in rent annually to the Riecken family, the owners of the site.

      • If the Rieckens own the property and would want the dock, wouldn’t it be cheaper to give it to them instead of paying to tear it down.

  4. Doesn’t the city pay the Riecken family 40 thousand for rent of the dock area?
