ATR Available for Hoosiers on Social Security
Indiana is on track to return nearly $1.5 billion to Hoosiers thanks to our state’s automatic taxpayer refund (ATR) law. Most taxpayers received their refund via either electronic direct deposit or mailed check in the fall of 2022.
However, social security income recipients need to file a 2022 income tax return this year (before the end of calendar year 2023) in order to receive the $200 refundable credit they are entitled to receive under a law passed in August.
Social security income recipients may also be eligible for additional tax relief through the Unified Tax Credit for the Elderly, which is also a refundable state tax credit.
