UE Athletics sets new department GPA record

Aces student-athletes registered a 3.492 GPA in 2022-23

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Over the course of the 2022-23 school year, University of Evansville student-athletes compiled a 3.492 grade point average, marking the highest in department history.

“This is such a great achievement by our student-athletes and is a testament to the importance of academics at the University of Evansville,” UE Athletics Director Ziggy Siegfried stated.  “I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for the work that they put in to achieve this.  It took contributions from everyone to make this happen!”

Making the effort even more impressive was the face that each of the Purple Aces athletic programs achieved a GPA above 3.0.  Eight UE teams completed the academic year with GPAs over 3.50.  Women’s cross country led the way with a 3.838 GPA while women’s track and field and women’s soccer finished at 3.754 and 3.714, respectively.  Softball (3.638), men’s cross country (3.635), women’s golf (3.622), women’s swimming and diving (3.540) and men’s track and field (3.507) also finished above a 3.50.

“We are very proud of the continued commitment to academic excellence by our student-athletes.  Our coaches recruit talented individuals who seek to be successful in the classroom in addition to their respective sports,” UE Deputy AD for Internal Operations/SWA Sarah Solinsky said.  “The University of Evansville has faculty who play a key role in assisting our student-athletes when they miss class for team travel, have to reschedule exams, or meet outside of regular class time.  This record GPA is a testament to the ongoing efforts by many campus offices to provide the best student-athlete experience at the University of Evansville.”

Multiple programs and student-athletes have been recognized for their academic achievements over the last year while other sports announcements are set for the coming days and weeks.  Academic awards that have been announced are included below.

Cancellation of Las Vegas Holiday Classic alters UE men’s basketball schedule

Aces to play in Chattanooga MTE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following the unfortunate cancellation of the 2023 Las Vegas Holiday Classic, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team has altered its non-conference slate while entering a new multi-team event.

UE was originally slated to play in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic in November, however. Organizers recently notified the Aces that due to unforeseen circumstances, the tournament was cancelled and will not take place.

Evansville will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to take part in a two-game MTE from November 24-25.  The Purple Aces will face Chattanooga on November 24 while taking on Southeast Missouri State on the 25th.  Further details, including game times, will be announced at a later date.

FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Never Any! Brand Ready-To-Eat Ham and Cheese Lunch Kits Due to Misbranding and an Undeclared Allergen

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for Never Any! brand ready-to-eat (RTE) ham and cheese lunch kits containing chocolate chip cookies that may contain peanut, a known allergen, which is not declared on the finished product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to peanuts are aware that this product should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are believed to no longer be available for purchase.

Smith pitches Otters over Greys

Evansville, Ind. – Zach Smith worked seven innings of one-run ball as the Evansville Otters cruised past the Empire State Greys 6-1 Friday night at Bosse Field.

Smith worked four in-order innings and struck out six batters. He allowed just one run and three hits in his seven innings on the mound to earn his fifth win and seventh quality start of the season.

Evansville used two homers to propel their offense.

Noah Myers led off the Otters’ bats with a solo home run to right in the first inning for his 10th homer of the year.

Empire State tied the game on a walk and single in the top of the fourth.

Jeffrey Baez responded with a 412 foot solo home run down the left field line to leadoff the fourth, good for his team-leading 14th home run of the season.

The Otters plated three more runs in the seventh inning. Dakota Phillips hit a two-RBI double and Ethan Skender followed with an RBI single.

Myers extended his hit streak to 12 games. Baez finished the day with three hits.

Jon Beymer pitched the final two innings for the Otters with two strikeouts.

Evansville pitching has allowed just six total hits over the last two games pitched. The Otters’ offense has smashed 15 home runs in the seven games since returning from the All-Star Break.

The Otters face the Greys in the middle game of the series Saturday evening as part of HOT96 FM and YMCA’s Wizards Night.

Partnership With COCA COLA And Evansville Will Continue Rain Barrel Program

The City of Evansville’s Storm Water Management Department is proud to announce its continued partnership with the Coca-Cola Company for its Rain Barrel Program. The program, which aims to promote water conservation, has been a tremendous success in raising awareness about the importance of preserving water resources.

As part of this partnership, Coca-Cola will donate 55-gallon plastic drums, which will be converted into rain barrels. These rain barrels provide an eco-friendly solution for collecting rainwater, which can be used for various purposes, such as watering plants, gardens, and lawns while reducing water consumption.

Individuals interested in obtaining rain barrels for personal use are invited to participate in the pickup event, which will take place Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. The event will take place at the Back 40 Parking Lot, located behind the Civic Center Complex.

Please note that both pickup events operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and no reservations are accepted. We encourage participants to arrive early to secure their rain barrels.

Scott E. Wolfe, age 53, of Evansville. He died at the scene from blunt force injuries sustained in the collision.

 

Senator Braun’s amendment to protect Second Amendment from “national emergency declaration” gun control

WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Mike Braun offered an amendment to the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act that would prevent President Biden and the Department of Health and Human Services from declaring gun violence a public health emergency for the purpose of instituting gun control measures and infringing on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

“National and local politicians across the country are always trying to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. We need to set into law that no one can declare a national health emergency to seize the power to restrict our Second Amendment rights with the stroke of a pen. I will always stand up for Hoosiers’ rights to protect themselves and their families.” – Senator Mike Braun

President Biden and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, and Senator Alex Padilla have called for gun violence public health emergencies.  

Senator Braun’s amendment would protect Americans’ right to bear arms from executive branch infringement by affirming that the HHS Secretary does not have the authority to institute gun control by declaring gun violence a public health emergency. 

Senator Braun’s remarks during the markup meeting of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans saw Big Government flourish and many of our constitutional rights be diminished. 

More and more, big government wants to turn everything into a national emergency. 

Recently, the Secretary of Health and Human Services advocated for gun violence to be declared a public health emergency to grant HHS power to restrict Americans’ right to keep and bear arms. 

The Department of Health and Human Services was never intended to implement gun control of any kind. 

My amendment would simply prohibit HHS from declaring a public health emergency to implement gun control. 

 I urge my colleagues to vote yes on my amendment. 

 

USI President Rochon included in IBJ Media Indiana 250 list second year in a row

University of Southern Indiana President Ronald S. Rochon, PhD, has been named to the IBJ Media Indiana 250 list for the second year in a row. The list includes 250 of the most influential executives across the state in an array of economic sectors.

In its nomination process, IBJ Media, comprised of Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ), Inside INdiana Business and Indiana Lawyer, looked for individuals statewide who make the biggest differences for Indiana’s economy and Hoosiers overall. Editors and publishers at IBJ, Inside INdiana Business and Indiana Lawyer reviewed nominations, researched Indiana organizations and talked with community members across the state to determine this year’s Indiana 250 class.
