Aces baseball takes series opener in 7-6 win over Missouri
The Purple Aces matched their season-high in hits against the Tigers
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Evansville baseball team earned its first road win of 2025 in a back-and-forth battle with the Missouri Tigers.
The lead on Friday night changed hands three times before the Purple Aces closed the door on Missouri with a 7-6 win. It was the team’s first meeting in just under 40 years as UE tied the series on Friday with the victory. Evansville’s offense combined for 14 hits and seven RBIs while its pitching threw nine strikeouts and only three walks.
“We took a big step tonight as we won a close game early in the season,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “We had great overall approaches at the plate, especially seeing Cal McGinnis have a big game. [Pitchers] Deverman and Roberts made some big pitches to earn this win. I’m ready to see us compete for 18 innings tomorrow.”
The Aces offense got going early as third baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) hit a solo home run into right field with two outs on the board. Friday was the first game this year where UE scored in the first inning. But the Tigers quickly tied the game up in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of their own.
Evansville kept attacking the ball as left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) led off the second with a single to left. Longmeier soon made his way to third as he stole second base and advanced on a throwing error. But he would be stranded in scoring position as the Aces didn’t find a deep ball to bring Longmeier home.
Missouri had a similar result in the bottom of the inning as UE’s defense stranded a runner on base. Evansville’s offense got going again in the top of the third as right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) hit his second double of the season to lead the team in slugging percentage. Taubert scored to give the Aces another one-run lead with McGinnis connected on his second hit with a long single to center field.
The UE defense stranded two more Tigers in the third to preserve the one-run lead. Evansville got a little insurance in the top of the fourth as Longmeier took first on an error and scored two at-bats later as shortstop Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) had an RBI groundout to second.
But the Aces’ two-run lead didn’t last long as Missouri began the bottom of the fourth with a double, a single, and two bunts to tie the game. The Tigers then took the lead with a sacrifice fly and another single for a two-run advantage. Starting pitcher Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt West HS) got out of the inning with his fourth strikeout of the night but was credited with three of the scored runs.
It remained a 5-3 game for the next two innings as neither offense could get anything going. But it was UE who broke out first in the top of the seventh. Evansville’s top of the order hit five singles in a row with only one out on the board to tie up the game. Longmeier helped give the Aces the lead with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring McGinnis to make it a 6-5 game.
UE’s defense quickly ended the seventh with three outs in four at-bats while the offense added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. After a ground out to begin the inning, second baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) was hit by a pitch to take first base. Evansville returned to the top of its order for center fielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) who already had a hit and a diving out on the night. Rumsey smashed the fifth pitch he saw down the right field line for the Aces’ first triple of 2025 and a two-run lead.
UE was able to hang onto its lead with strong defense and a big performance from RHP Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS). Despite a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth, Evansville limited the damage with two strikeouts and a ground out. Missouri was able to score, making it only a one-run game for the Aces going into the ninth.
Longmeier and first baseman Ben Stuart (Mason, Ohio / Willam Mason HS) singled in the ninth. But with two outs on the board beforehand, neither runner scored an insurance run for UE. In the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers’ first batter flew out to left for an out while their pinch hitter was walked. Roberts was able to buckle down after the walk, throwing back-to-back strikeouts to close the door on a potential Missouri comeback.
Deverman earned his first win of the season pitching seven innings with seven hits, five runs, four earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. Roberts had Evansville’s first save of the year pitching two innings in relief for no hits, one run, two walks, and four strikeouts. On offense, Taubert and McGinnis led the way with three hits each. McGinnis also led the Aces in RBIs bringing in three runs on the night.
UE and Missouri face off again tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader. The first game is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch from Taylor Stadium.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball went 1-1 to start the road trip Friday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles started the day with a comeback 8-7 win over Bowling Green State University and completed the afternoon with a 16-12 loss to Southern Illinois University.

USI ends the day 6-3 overall in 2025, while Bowling Green State University goes to 4-3 and Southern Illinois University is 5-3.

USI vs. Bowling Green:
USI junior designated hitter Cole Kitchens hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to cap off an impressive comeback win by the Eagles over BGSU, 8-7. USI rallied from seven runs down after four-and-a-half innings for the victory.

USI started to chip away at the 7-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth, one in the eighth, and one in the ninth to tie the game, 7-7. The Eagles got on the board in the fifth on a RBI ground out by senior centerfielder Khi Holiday and a RBI single by junior leftfielder BJ Banyon to make the score 7-2.

The gap continued to shrink to 7-5 in the sixth on a RBI single by junior designated hitter Cole Kitchens and a two-run single by junior shortstop Clayton Slack. Slack would strike again in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to a single tally, 7-6.

USI junior first baseman Kannon Coakley sent the game into extra innings tied, 7-7, with a RBI double and set the stage for Kitchens in the 10th.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Aaron Rubio picked up his first win at USI in relief. Rubio threw a near-perfect 10th inning, hitting a batter and striking out one, to get the Eagles to the bottom half of the extra frame.

USI relievers shut the door on the Falcons in the five innings of play with no runs or hits, while striking out seven.

USI senior left-hander Mason Sweeney started and got a no-decision. Sweeney allowed two runs on three walks in two-thirds of an inning.

USI vs. SIU:
The Screaming Eagles flew out to a big lead, but the Salukis rallied with 10 runs in the eighth to win 16-12.

USI built a 6-0 lead to get out in front, scoring once in the fourth and five times in the sixth to build a 6-0 advantage. Kitchens had the highlight of the five-run sixth with a two-run double, while Slack had a RBI-single in the rally.

The Salukis would rally in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Eagles’ advantage to one run, 6-5. USI would bounce back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to re-extend the lead before SIU got a run back in the bottom half for an 8-6 score with two frames to play.
SIU continued to rally with the 10-run eighth inning to lead 16-8. USI would try to rally in the top of the ninth with four runs, but would fall short 16-12.

On the mound, USI freshman right-hander Marshall Loch took the loss in relief, Loch (0-1) allowed four runs on two hits and two hit batters.

USI junior right-hander Andres Gonzalez started and went five-plus innings for the Eagles. Gonzalez, who did not allow a hit through the first five frames, allowed four runs on two hits and four walks while striking out four.

USI continues to play in Carbondale Saturday when it plays BGSU at 4 p.m. and concludes the weekend with a game versus SIU Sunday at 4 p.m.

UE takes down Kentucky and Tennessee Tech on Friday 

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For the first time since defeating #17 Illinois State in 2007, the University of Evansville softball team defeated a ranked opponent to open the Hilltopper Spring Fling on Friday.  The Purple Aces held on to take a 7-5 win over 24th-ranked Kentucky to open the weekend before defeating Tennessee Tech in the second game of the day.

Game 1 – UE 7, #24 Kentucky 5

Scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first, the Purple Aces held off a late challenge to defeat 24th-ranked Kentucky by a final of 7-5

Evansville opened the game with a 7-run bottom of the first.  A pair of walks set up the scoring opportunity for Taylor Howe, who singled down the left field line to bring in the first run of the game.  Niki Bode followed with a sac fly to bring in the second run of the day.  Three 2-out hits saw the lead expand even more.  Kynadee Warner singled to left to bring in Howe while Jenna Donohoo followed with a 2-run double to right center.  Eliza Piggott capped things off with a 2-run home run to make it a 7-0 game.

Kentucky quickly responded with three runs in the top half of the second.  Neither team would record a hit until the top of the 5th when the Wildcats plated two more runs to cut the deficit to just two.  UK looked to add more in the sixth as they posted a pair of hits before Aces starter Kate Ridgway kept them off the board.

Warner registered her second hit of the day in the bottom of the 6th, but the deficit remained at two runs heading to the 7th.  Ridgway retired the Wildcats in order to seal the win.  She tossed the entire game and allowed five runs on five hits while striking out four batters on the way to her third win of the season.  Evansville had five hits on the day with Warner picking up two.

Game 2 – UE 4, Tennessee Tech 0

Elle Jarrett threw a complete game 2-hit shutout to lead the Purple Aces to a 4-0 win over Tennessee Tech to wrap up the day on Friday.  Evansville did not take long to score as Keghan Pye gave her team a 1-0 lead.  Pye reached on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball.  When Taylor Howe reached on a TTU error, Pye scored from second base.

Tennessee Tech picked up a hit in the first inning but would not pick up another until the 6th as Jarrett took care of business in the circle.  The lone baserunner for the Golden Eagles between the 2nd and 5th reached on an error.

The score remained at 1-0 until the bottom of the 5th when UE picked up some insurance.  Pye and Jess Willsey both reached on a walk before Morgan Adams acme to the plate and delivered a 3-run home run with two outs to push the lead to four.  From there, Jarrett kept the shutout intact to lead UE to its fifth win in a row and a sweep of the day.

Saturday will see UE face Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky.

MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball opened the final road trip of the season with a loss to the University of Tennessee at Martin, 79-63, Thursday evening at the Elam Center. The Screaming Eagles are 10-19 overall and 5-14 in OVC action, while the Skyhawks go to 13-17, 9-10 OVC.

The Eagles found themselves down 10 midway through the first half, 23-13, before rallying to pull to within two, 30-28, on a three-pointer by junior guard Jack Campion with 4:41 to play. Campion has six points during USI’s 15-7 run.

UTM, however, took the momentum back and outscored the USI, 11-5, in the final four minutes to lead, 41-33, at the intermission. Campion reached double-digits during the first half to lead USI in the scoring column.

USI’s halftime deficit grew briefly after halftime, reaching 12 points, 46-34, but the Eagles slowly began to shrink the margin to six points, 51-45, with 13:43 to play. UTM rallied back and pushed the margin to 14 points, 59-45, with an 8-0 dash before the halfway mark of the final half.

The deficit would continue to grow in the final 10 minutes, climbing to 21 points, 79-58, before the Skyhawks closed out the 79-63 final.

USI had four players reach double digits, led by the 15 points of junior guard Jayland Randall. Sophomore forward Stephen Olowoniyi followed with 13 points, while junior guard Ryan Hall and Campion closed out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

Next Up For USI:
The Eagles conclude the 2024-25 campaign Saturday at Tennessee State University. Tipoff at TSU is 3:30 p.m.

TSU is 15-15 overall and 11-8 in the OVC after defeating Morehead State University, 64-55, tonight. The Tigers are 9-3 in the last 12 games after this weekend.

USI leads the series with TSU, 6-4, after defeating the Tigers, 77-75, at Liberty Arena in December. The Eagles were led in the first meeting by junior guard Damoni Harrison, who had 19 points. Owlowoniyi and Randall followed with 18 points and 15 points, respectively.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team had a close first half but fell behind in the second half in a 71-54 loss to the Northern Iowa Panthers.
For the third straight game sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) led the Purple Aces on the floor with a double-double. Hartwig was UE’s most efficient scorer at 54.5% from field goal range while also grabbing 10 boards against Northern Iowa. Evansville had two other players score in double figures while the Panthers had five players with similar outings.
It took over a minute for either team to score on Thursday night as both turned over their first possessions of the game. But it was UNI who struck first with four points. Senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu d’Urgell, Spain) struck back with a second-chance jumper to get the Aces on the board. The Panthers had two brief four-point runs before UE had two made threes in a minute and a half to make it a four-point game. Northern Iowa had another short run, almost putting Evansville behind by double digits. But Palomo came through again, getting to the line for two free throws to keep the game at a seven-point deficit after a quarter.
The teams traded shots to begin the second quarter of action. The Panthers began to pull away with their longest run of the half, leading the Aces by 13. UE answered with eight points in just under a minute and a half thanks to back-to-back threes from Palomo and Hartwig. But Evansville couldn’t keep the offense going as UNI again made it a 13-point game. The Aces were able to get their deficit back into single digits with a five-point run in the final minute of the first half. UE headed into the locker room at the McLeod Center only down by eight with the score at 35-27.
It’d be a tough start to the second half for Evansville as the Panthers came out of the locker room on a 13-2 run. It’d be freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) who broke the Aces scoring drought with four straight points. Runner and Hartwig were the only UE players who scored past the first minute of the third quarter as they each had six points. Evansville went into the final 10 minutes of the game trailing 61-41.
The Aces kept UNI scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter. In that time UE added three points to its total, all of which came at the free throw line. The teams traded baskets through the middle of the quarter. Evansville had its final run of the game in the last two and a half minutes with six points. But the Aces would fall to the Panthers 71-54 on Thursday night.
A trio of UE players had double-digit performances as Hartwig had 17, Runner had 13, and Palomo was right behind her with 12. Palomo led the team with four steals while freshman guard Avery Kelley (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS) had a team-high five assists to match her career-high.
Evansville returns home for a game this weekend against the Indiana State Sycamores. The Aces will tip-off with their in-state rivals at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 1.

Vincennes University Bowling Postseason Information

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University men’s bowling team once again qualified this season for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Sectional Championships.

The Trailblazers will be headed back to Smyrna, Tenn. and the Smyrna Bowling Center where they will compete for a spot in the USBC National Championships.

The 2025 USBC Sectional Championships will begin Friday, March 7 with the Intercollegiate Singles Championship (ISC), where members of the VU bowling team will compete in six traditional games, with 24 bowlers advancing to the 2025 ISC Finals. The top four bowlers from each of the four Sectional Championships will qualify plus an additional eight individuals based on field size.

The Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) will begin Saturday, March 8 and conclude Sunday, March 9, consisting of 64 baker games.

The top four teams from each of the four Sectional Championships will qualify for the National Championships which will be held at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, Nev. April 14 through 19.

Eagles start fast but fall to Skyhawks Thursday

MARTIN, Tenn. – Despite a fast start after the opening tip on Thursday evening, University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball fell 84-69 at the University of Tennessee at Martin to begin this week’s road trip in Tennessee.

Southern Indiana (20-10, 12-7 OVC) started Thursday’s game picking up where it left off from last week’s homestand. The Screaming Eagles scored seven unanswered points to begin the contest over the first two minutes. The lead grew to 10-2 early on thanks to a straightaway three by graduate forward Madi Webb. Fellow fifth-year senior forward Meredith Raley also drained a trey to help USI go ahead 14-8 by the first media timeout. However, UT Martin (13-17, 10-9 OVC) built a 14-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to surge in front. The two sides exchanged baskets late in the first, as UT Martin led 25-21 going to the second period.

The Skyhawks’ momentum carried over into the start of the second frame with an 8-0 run to go up 33-25. USI snapped the drought just over four minutes into the quarter when sophomore guard Sophia Loden drained a three from the top of the arc. In the back half of the second, Southern Indiana closed the gap. Junior guard Ali Saunders scored a layup and swished in a three off of two UT Martin turnovers in the last couple of minutes of the first half, helping bring USI back within four, 39-35, at halftime.

The two teams went back and forth to begin the second half. Webb knocked down a pair of field goals early in the third quarter to hit double figures for the game. The Skyhawks maintained a two-possession lead into the middle of the third. Later in the period, UT Martin connected on a few jump shots to pull ahead by 11, 58-47, before senior guard Vanessa Shafford answered with a layup to make it a nine-point deficit with under two minutes remaining in the third. Raley and Shafford scored the last two baskets of the third to make the score 60-53 in favor of UT Martin heading into the fourth quarter.

The Screaming Eagles cut into the deficit with baskets by Webb and Shafford in the early minutes of the fourth, and USI pulled back to within four points, 63-59, on a make by Loden with just over six minutes left. However, UT Martin made a string of eight consecutive field goals over a four-minute span in the back portion of the fourth quarter, making it difficult for USI to climb back in the final stretch of the contest.

Southern Indiana shot nearly 46 percent overall (28-61) and 42 percent (8-19) from beyond the arc. USI went 5-7 at the free-throw line. Webb led the Eagles with 15 points on 6-10 shooting. Raley tallied 13 points, and Saunders added 11 points with five rebounds and seven assists.

UT Martin went for 50 percent (32-64) from the floor and 38 percent (8-21) from three-point range. The Skyhawks were 12-13 for over 92 percent at the charity stripe. Junior forward Anaya Brown posted a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kenley McCarn notched 24 points for UT Martin.

Following Thursday’s results, the Screaming Eagles remained tied with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, as Little Rock fell on the road at Eastern Illinois University. The Panthers secured the no. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament with the result.

Going into Saturday’s regular-season finale slate, USI needs a win and a Little Rock loss for the Eagles to grab the no. 4 seed and a first-round bye in next week’s tournament. Little Rock owns the tiebreaker over USI after the Trojans won both regular-season meetings.

The Screaming Eagles finish the road trip and the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Tennessee State University from Nashville, Tennessee. VU’s Adi Fuller signs with Morehead State University

VU’s Adi Fuller signs with Morehead State University

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University sophomore and member of the VU Cross Country and Track and Field teams Adi Fuller (Evansville, Ind.) signed her letter of intent this week to join the Cross Country and Track teams at NCAA Division I Morehead State University next season.

“I signed with Morehead State because of the opportunities that were given to me,” Fuller said. “Coach Dixon created an opportunity for me that I couldn’t turn down. Given the opportunity to run at the Division I level has been a dream since I can remember and when Morehead State reached out and I looked at how their program was excelling, I knew I wanted to be a part of that. The team was so welcoming and it felt like home the second I walked onto campus.”

Fuller set her personal best on the Cross Country course at the 2023 NJCAA Division I National Championships in Alabama last season, leading the Trailblazers with a time of 20:09.4 and placing 71st overall.

Fuller then followed that performance up with a 35th place finish three days later in the Half Marathon Championships.

Fuller was just short of her PR at this year’s Cross Country Nationals, finishing with a time of 20:15.2 to take 92nd overall and put the VU Women’s team in 19th place as a team.

Fuller then saved her best for last on the Cross Country course, finishing off her sophomore Cross Country season with a 32nd place finish in the Half Marathon Championships, taking 32nd overall with a time of 1:34:05.9.

Fuller has also been a standout performer for the Trailblazer Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field team, competing in multiple mid-distance and distance races.

Fuller set her best time in the Mile earlier this Indoor season at the John Gartland Invitational, finishing with a time of 5:26.32.

She has also competed in the 800 meters, where she set a time of 2:26.86 at the Jim Vargo Invitational last season, 1500m (4:55.85, Billy Hayes Invitational) and 3000m Steeplechase (11:45.67, GVSU Extra Weekend Meet).

Fuller competed last year at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships as a member of the Distance Medley Relay and 4×800 Relay teams. Fuller and her teammates took 12th in the DMR and 13th overall in the 4×800.

Fuller capped off last year’s Outdoor Track and Field season in style at the National Championships, taking 19th overall in the 3000m Steeplechase and placing 27th overall in the 5000m.

“My favorite memory at VU was when I was running the 3k Steeplechase and I was trying so hard to qualify for Nationals and when I did my friends and teammates were so excited for me,” Fuller added. “They reminded me why I love this sport.”

Fuller is still looking to add more to her resume this season as she continues her Indoor Track and Field season next weekend at the 2025 NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Lubbock, Tex.

Fuller will then set her sights on having another solid Outdoor season, beginning Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28, with the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Mo.

“Vincennes University has provided a strong foundation both athletically and academically to help me transition to a four-year school,” Fuller said. “Vincennes has helped me prepare myself for the next level. Coach Tyler has pushed me to improve my times and has helped me be a better athlete and person overall. Competing against strong opponents and balancing an intense training schedule prepared me for the challenges I will face at a four-year university.”

“Vincennes University helped me with time management, personal responsibility and academic support, which all have prepared me for the higher expectations at a university,” Fuller added. “The smaller class sizes and professors allowed me to build strong study habits and take my education seriously, making sure I am prepared for the next step in my academic journey.”

The Vincennes University Athletic Department would like to congratulate Adi Fuller on her signing with Morehead State University and wishes her good luck as she continues her running career next season.

UE softball travels to Hilltopper Spring Fling

Aces play five games this weekend in Bowling Green

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After winning three out of four games last weekend, the University of Evansville softball team travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for this weekend’s Hilltopper Spring Fling.

Over the course of the weekend, the Purple Aces will have two games against both Kentucky and Tennessee Tech while facing Western Kentucky in one contest.

Taylor Howe enters the weekend as the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.  In four games between Thursday and Sunday of last week, Howe batted .455 while hitting a home run in each contest.  She also slugged an impressive 1.636 over that span.

UE completed its second home tournament on Monday, winning contests against Western Michigan and UT Martin.  Jenna Donohoo and Niki Bode each batted .667 in the 4-game tournament with each recording six hits in nine at-bats.  Bode scored four runs while Donohoo added three.

Morgan Adams had the top power numbers for the Aces, belting four homers while adding six RBI.  She finished the weekend batting .500.  Pitchers Elle Jarrett and Gracie Hollingsworth had a nice weekend in the circle, both finishing the weekend with a sub-2.00 ERA.

As a team, the Aces have hit a combined total of 23 home runs this season.  That is nearly double the total of any other school in the MVC with UNI and Southern Illinois tied for second with 12.  UE also leads the league in runs (85), RBI (79), and total bases (193).
