USI’s Grafton and Markland claim OVC weekly honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer sophomore defender Charli Grafton (Sunriver, Oregon) and sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) claimed Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. Grafton was named OVC co-Defensive Player of the Week and Markland was named co-Goalkeeper of the Week for the second consecutive week.
 
Grafton picks up her first accolade of the season, while Markland has her second. Grafton and Markland helped lead USI’s defensive unit to a second consecutive 1-1 tie last Thursday against the University of Kansas City, pushing USI’s unbeaten streak to three matches. Against a potent offense from the Roos, Grafton and Markland kept the match low scoring.
 
In the centerback position, Grafton won 70 percent of her defensive duels and 100 percent of aerial duels. Plus, Grafton had nine clearances, eight interceptions, three blocked shots, and a 70 percent distribution rate out of the back in a full 90 minutes against Kansas City.
 
Between the posts, Markland had another sensational performance in goal for USI last Thursday to get the road result to conclude the non-conference season. On her toes from the opening kickoff, Markland made a career-best nine saves. Markland was strong in facing 28 shots by the Roos, the most shot attempts the Screaming Eagles have seen this season.
 
On the season, Grafton has started every match and played every minute so far. Markland has also started all nine matches, posting a 1.27 GAA with 36 saves. She ranks second in the OVC in GAA and fifth in saves.

Grafton, Markland and the Eagles (1-5-3) open conference play in the OVC on Thursday against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock at 6 p.m. The match begins a two-game road swing this weekend to start conference play for USI, who will visit Tennessee Tech University on Sunday.

UE Women’s golf takes 6th place at “The Velvet”

Enchelmayer and Petrova lead UE 

PADUCAH, Ky. – Postings scores of 78 in the final round of “The Velvet”, Allison Enchelmayer and Kate Petrova helped the University of Evansville women’s golf team earn a 6th place finish at The Country Club of Paducah.

Enchelmayer earned the top finish for the Purple Aces, tying for the 11th spot.  Her 78 in the final round gave her a final score of 233.  Petrova finished in 18th place with a 236.  She registered a 76 in the final 18 holes, marking her low round of the event.

Tying for 33rd on the final leaderboard was Jane Grankina.  After carding an 82 in the last round, she finished with a 243.  Magdalena Borisova and Trinity Dubbs were fourth and fifth on the squad, respectively.  Borisova’s 3-round total finished at 251 following a score of 79 on Tuesday.  Dubbs wrapped up the weekend with a 263.

Destynie Sheridan and Carly Frazier completed the tournament as individuals.  Sheridan posted a 251 over the three rounds while Frazier scored a 270.

Belmont took the team championship, defeating Murray State by two strokes.  The Bruins’ 921 bested the Racers’ scored of 923.  Chloe Tarkany of Belmont won the individual title of Murray State’s Payton Carter.  After both tied atop the leaderboard with a 226, Tarkany birdied the first playoff hole.

The ladies are back in action on Oct. 2-3 at the Saluki Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

USI finishes first event of 2023-24, places 11th at The Velvet

PADUCAH, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf placed 11th at The Velvet with a three-round 1013 (333-327-353). The tournament was hosted by Murray State University at the Country Club of Paducah in Paducah, Kentucky.

USI was 11th after the first day of competition, shooting a 333 in the first round and a 327 in round two. On Tuesday, USI maintained its position after a third-round 353.
 
Belmont University won the tournament, passing host Murray State down the stretch. Belmont shot a 54-hole 921 (312-298-311). The Bruins shot four strokes better than the Racers in Tuesday’s final round.
 
USI senior Haylee Exline (Poseyville, Indiana) led USI by placing tied for 43rd with a three-round 248 (80-79-89), including a team-best 79 in the second round after holing three birdies during Monday afternoon’s swing.
 
Senior Halle Gutwein (DeMotte, Indiana) was second on the Eagles with a 54-hole 253 (85-80-88), finishing two strokes ahead of fellow senior teammate Katelyn Sayyalinh (Rockford, Illinois) with a three-round 255 (81-89-85). The two were T-54 and 57th, respectively.
 
The Eagles will be back on the course this weekend, September 23-24, in The Roseann Schwartz Invitational, hosted by Youngstown State University at the Mill Creek Golf Club in Ostrander, Ohio.

The Vanderburgh County Coroners Office along with the Evansville Police and Fire Departments responded to Silgan Closures located at 2201 W. Maryland St. Evansville, IN 47712. Their they discovered a single victim who had suffered injuries while working on a machine at the plant. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon to document the victims injuries. Indiana Occupational Safety and  Health Administration was notified and along with the responding agencies will be investigating the incident.

Governor Holcomb Issues Proclamation for Forensic Science Week, September 17-23, 2023

The Indiana State Police would appreciate media support informing the public about the 11th Annual National Forensic Science Week occurring September 17-23, 2023.

National Forensic Science Week brings recognition to the role that proper forensic science plays in the investigation of crimes throughout the nation, from exonerating the innocent to identifying the guilty.

Below are some interesting stats from the past year (2022):

  • There were 24,935 new cases submitted for analysis at the four Indiana State Police laboratories
  • Crime Scene Investigators responded to 941 different crime scenes throughout the state
  • Polygraph Examiners conducted 418 polygraph tests
  • The total number of Indiana offender samples being searched in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) was more than 431,000.  In 2022, there were 736 cases in Indiana linked to a potential suspect by a CODIS DNA match

Hoosiers urged to help #STOPTrackTragedies During U.S. and Indiana Rail Safety Week

Indianapolis, INDIANA, September 18, 2023– Every year, 2,100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured when they engage in unsafe behavior around tracks and trains. Indiana Operation Lifesaver is joining Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), Operation Lifesaver Canada and the Mexican Association of Railroads (AMF) from September 18-24 to observe Rail Safety Week in North America and urging the public to help #STOPTrackTragedies. Governor Eric Holcomb signed a proclamation declaring the observance of Rail Safety Week in Indiana as well. 

“Across the United States and throughout Indiana, Operation Lifesaver will share rail safety messages each day during Rail Safety Week underscoring our core mission – to save lives,” said Jessica Feder, Executive Director of Indiana Operation Lifesaver. “We are grateful to our safety partners at INDOT, railroads, and in the first responder community as well as the many other organizations who share the rail safety message this week, but more importantly each and every day.”

“Rail Safety Week activities in Indiana will emphasize community education events along enforcement blitzes, and social media to share our lifesaving messages,” said Jessica Feder. “We are kicking off the week today with state and local Rail Safety Week proclamations. Through rail safety education during Rail Safety Week and every day, we are showing Indiana residents how to make safe choices around trains and tracks.”

In Indiana each year, we average approximately 120 railroad crossing collisions with multiple injuries and deaths. Rail related trespasser injuries and fatalities are also on the rise throughout the state. Operation Lifesaver works to prevent these needless incidents from happening.

As part of Rail Safety week, new video and audio public service announcements (PSAs) as well as social media campaigns are being released. An ongoing campaign called #STOPTrackTragedies features videos with the personal stories of people directly affected by rail crossing or trespassing incidents — including victims, friends and family members, locomotive engineers, and first responders. In Indiana and across the U.S., along with the PSAs and a social media campaign, the following themes will be emphasized: 

  • Monday, September 18 kicks off the week with the overarching theme of #STOPTrackTragedies and a focus on Media Outreach and Rail Safety Week Proclamations in states and localities. 
  • Tuesday, September 19 focuses on the annual observance of Operation Clear Track in the U.S. and Canada emphasizing the importance of obeying crossing safety and anti-trespass laws. Law enforcement partners will conduct awareness exercises, Officer on the Train activities and other in person positive enforcement events; first responders will share RSW messages virtually through social media, email messaging and website posts.
  • Wednesday, September 20 highlights Crossing Safety, with outreach to the public, farmers, and farm machine operators as well as outdoor enthusiasts on safe crossing techniques with special attention to the Blue and White Emergency Notification System (ENS) signs at crossings.
  • Thursday, September 21, Transit Safety Thursday and Professional Driver Safety, showcases how to stay safe as a rail commuter or transit rider as well as safe choices around railroad tracks and trains for professional drivers. 
  • Friday, September 22 focuses on Wearing Red or “Red Out” for Rail Safety by encouraging safety organizations, partners, schools, railroads, and the public to wear red at public events and to share photos on social media.
  • Saturday, September 23 highlights Trespass Prevention, educating pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, and outdoor enthusiasts about the dangers posed by being on or near the tracks. 
  • Sunday, September 24 promotes No Photo, Video or Selfie is Worth the Risk, to warn professional and amateur photographers against putting themselves or others in danger by illegally taking photos, videos, or filming near tracks and trains.
