Spend an hour with bestselling author Jeff Selingo, who immersed himself in the world of admissions for a year to answer the question on the minds of teenagers and their parents: how do colleges select their freshman class?
The result is his most recent book, Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions, named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2020 by the New York Times. For the book, Jeff was embedded in three admissions offices — the University of Washington, Emory University, and Davidson College — and follows a group of high-school seniors through the process and players behind the scenes, including the marketers, the financial-aid consultants, and the rankers.

Area II Administrative Assistant Retires after Thirty-Six Years of Service

0

Today, after thirty-six years of devoted service with the Indiana State Police, Kate Stuart, PE 4983, Area II Professional Staff Administrative Assistant has retired. Kate was appointed to service on June 1, 1987.  During her tenure she has served for many North Zone and Area II Commanders, to include (chronologically) Captain John Siegel, Captain Dave Saggars, Captain Larry Rollins, Captain Bob Rich, Major Gary Robbins, Captain Keith Kopinski, Captain Andy Coffee, Major Ed Schroeder, and currently working for Major Tony Casto and Captain Kevin Smith.

Anyone that has had the privilege of working with Kate knows the value of her warm and caring personality in the workplace, especially the commanders that have relied on her administrative support over the last thirty-six years. She has an intellectual value and working knowledge of the department that will take many years to develop and replace.

In honor of her service and anticipated retirement a celebration was held at the Fort Wayne Post training room last Friday.  As expected, it was a packed house of family, friends, and co-workers representing nearly four decades of public service.  Specifically in attendance to speak on behalf of the guest of honor was Superintendent Doug Carter, Major Tony Casto, and Captain Kevin Smith.

During their respective tributes, Superintendent Carter stated that, “There is someone… at each district that keeps things moving, but there’s not another Kate Stuart at any one of our districts, there just simply is not.”  Major Casto noted, “The difficulty with completing Kate’s performance evaluations over the years, was filling out all the intangibles that aren’t on the standard checklist…her institutional knowledge is priceless.”  Captain Smith expressed that “Kate has had a big effect on this place over the years”, noting all the Majors and Captains that she has worked for (with) over thirty-six years.  “I just can’t express to you what she means to all of us.”  Captain Smith then presented Kate with an encased United States flag that had been previously flown over the Fort Wayne Post, symbolic of her own retirement and in appreciation for her dedicated public service.

After that presentation, an emotional Kate spoke on her own behalf- in typical fashion expressing first and foremost her gratitude and love for every person in attendance, and then highlighting the many friendships and memories that she will forever cherish.  She memorialized her first day on the job with the Indiana State Police, noting the great pride that she felt to have such an opportunity.  She recalled, “Oh my gosh, I was so proud to be working for the Indiana State Police. I was working for the best, but I had no idea what ‘the best’ really was at that point. As the years have gone on it has only gotten better. I love this place. I have always felt safe here… even when I am not here, I feel like I am surrounded by this protective shield of you all.”

– Kate, that is the ISP Family that we have all come to know and love, and you will always be a very special part of this Family- even into retirement. Farewell Kate!

Interim Head Coach Robbe Tarver earns first career win on Sunday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — UE men’s soccer put on a thrilling comeback performance Sunday afternoon in the team’s 3-1 win over the Cal State Fullerton Titans.

Freshman midfielder Jacopo Federizzi tallied his first collegiate goal to tie up Sunday’s game in the 38th minute, and it was all Purple Aces for the next 52. Along with his first tally, Federizzi assisted on Evansville’s second goal from junior midfielder Jose Vivas midway through the second half. The two midfielders led the team on offense with four shots each, combining for three shots on goal. Sealing the win for the Aces was forward Nacho Diaz Barragan, as he launched a header in the 77th minute on a cross from sophomore defender Nalu Wagner. Cal State Fullerton applied more pressure at the end of the match but starting senior goalkeeper Aidan Montoure made two of his five saves in the final 10 minutes.

“I think we definitely feel better than we did after Thursday,” Interim Head Coach Robbe Tarver said with a laugh following Sunday’s 3-1 victory. “Again, we went down 1-0 and had to respond. I think we showed our fight and our passion, and I think who we are as a team. The things that we speak about constantly, I think our guys showed that today. And that ability to respond, we talk a lot about event plus response equals outcome, and we responded super well today and got the outcome that we deserved.”

For the second game in a row, the Aces found themselves down early as the Titans scored in the 24th minute. It only took Evansville 14 minutes to respond with their first goal of the afternoon after being awarded a corner kick in the 37th minute. The initial kick landed wide left of the net, where Wagner chased it down for a cross that put the ball near the net. On the cross, freshman midfielder Baraka Tarleton headed the ball back to an open Federizzi, who buried it into the left corner of the net.

UE carried the momentum from its equalizer into the start of the second half, putting up a trio of shots in under ten seconds early in the 48th minute. After a tense few minutes in the Aces’ own end that resulted in a yellow card and two saves from Montoure, Evansville got the ball out into the offensive end. In the 65th minute, Fedrizzi was coming in hot on the right side and went for a shot that was redirected to the net by Vivas for UE’s first lead of the 2023 season. The Aces gave themselves a comfortable two-goal lead 12 minutes later as Wagner and Diaz Barragan connected for a header goal in the left corner.

Evansville hits the road for the first time this season in its next match. The Aces will make their way to High Point, N.C. for a game against the Panthers on Friday, Sept. 1. Kick-off for UE’s first road game is set for 6 p.m. from Vert Stadium.

Miscues cost USI versus Mercer

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer could not overcome a pair of defensive miscues in falling Mercer University, 2-0, Sunday morning in the home opener at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles start the year 0-2-0, while Mercer ends the first weekend of 2023 1-1-0.

USI trailed 1-0 after the first half after following a defensive breakdown at the 11:04 mark of the match. The Bears led the Eagles 7-5 in shots, putting a pair of shots on target.

The second half was a back and forth battle until USI senior midfielder Nick Faddis (St. Louis, Missouri) narrowly missed tying game at 63:11. Mercer responded six minutes later, 69:07, when the Bears split a pair of Eagle defenders for second tally of the match to seal the 2-0 contest.

Overall for the Eagles, USI was outshot, 15-10, but had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

NEXT UP FOR USI:
The Eagles return to the road September 1 when they visit the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for a noon contest. Green Bay started the year 0-1-0 and is playing Western Illinois University at home later this afternoon. The Phoenix opened the year with a 2-0 loss to the University of Memphis on August 24.

The Eagles are 1-2-0 all-time against Green Bay after losing a 3-1 decision last season at Strassweg Field. USI took the first meeting of the teams in 1980, 1-0, on the road, but lost, 1-0, in 1992 at the Quincy University Tournament.

Evansville, Ind. – The Evansville Otters closed out the 2023 Bosse Field regular season home schedule, falling to the Florence Y’alls 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Evansville was unable to clinch a playoff spot but a Washington loss lowers the Otters’ magic number to one with seven road games left to play this season.

The Otters notched seven hits but never found a run. Gary Mattis led Evansville’s offense with two hits.

Florence starter Ryan Watson tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

The Y’alls scored the first run of the game in the second on an RBI double.

A three-run home run in the sixth extended the lead for Florence to 4-0. Back-to-back doubles added the last run for the Y’alls in the eighth.

Otters’ starter Justin Watland allowed just one run through his first five frames of work but was credited with the loss.

Dakota Phillips hit his league-leading 31st double of the season and extended his on-base streak to 17 games.

Evansville finishes the regular season with seven games on the road. They kick off the road trip against the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget, Ill. starting on Tuesday with a 6:45 PM CT first pitch. Fans can tune in on the Otters Digital Network with the broadcast simulcast on FloSports.

USI Women’s Soccer has solid performance, suffers unlucky 1-0 loss

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer put together a solid performance on both sides of the field Sunday afternoon, but the Screaming Eagles came up on the wrong side of a 1-0 score against Purdue Fort Wayne University at Strassweg Field.

With Sunday’s results, the Screaming Eagles are now 0-3-1 this season, and Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 2-2-0.

In the first 45 minutes, both defenses played a strong role in the match. Each offense took some time to settle into a fluid rhythm in the contest. The two sides combined for seven shots in the first half. Southern Indiana’s best first-half opportunity came in the 27th minute when sophomore midfielder Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) took a strong rip at goal but was saved by the Mastodons’ graduate keeper Samantha Castaneda.

After that point, USI grabbed some control of the momentum and possession in the attacking half. Purdue Fort Wayne had one last look in the first half after a corner kick, taking a hard shot, but USI’s sophomore keeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) made a diving to the lower left corner to keep the contest scoreless at the halftime break.

Out of halftime, Purdue Fort Wayne came out on the attack. Following a solid save by Markland, the Mastodons scored a rebound goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on an unlucky break against the Screaming Eagles.

In the middle of the second half, USI created some momentum in the attacking half, generating a pair of good shot attempts. Freshman midfielder Lydia Bordfeld (Evansville, Indiana) took a crack at the top-left corner of the goal in the 64th minute from approximately 25 yards out, but the Mastodons’ keeper dove to make the save. Bordfeld had another chance a few minutes later that was also saved. USI had a flurry of shots in the latter minutes of the second half but could not sneak one by Castaneda before the final horn.

Both programs tallied 10 shots in the game, as Purdue Fort Wayne had six on goal and USI put five on target. Bordfeld put both of her shot attempts on goal, while Murphy had one shot on frame out of two attempts. Freshman forward Pilar Torres (Chula Vista, California) also took two shots in the match. Markland finished with a season-high five saves for Southern Indiana.
