USI faculty-produced Art for Science’s Sake wins “Best Hoosier Made Film” at Victory International Film Festival

Art for Science’s Sake: Stalking John James Audubon, produced by two University of Southern Indiana professors, was featured at the Victory International Film Festival September 7-9 and won “Best Hoosier Made Film.” The Victory International Film Festival is held in Evansville, Indiana, every September and features exclusively local films.

Dr. Leigh Anne Howard, Communication and Media Department Chair and Professor of Communication Studies, and Dr. David Black, Associate Professor Emeritus of Radio and Television, produced the one-hour documentary which explores the art and science of 19th century naturalist John James Audubon.

Together, they donated their prize of $500 to the Dave Black Endowed Scholarship for Radio-Television at USI.

Gov. Holcomb concludes third trip to Japan, targeting advanced manufacturing & mobility

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb concluded his third economic development trip to Japan yesterday, following a week spent fostering relationships with Indiana’s largest foreign investor and advancing mutually-beneficial partnerships across government, industry and innovation.

“It was great to be back in Japan last week, honoring the longstanding Indiana-Japan relationship and its significant contributions to our shared communities and cultures,” said Gov. Holcomb. “Indiana and Japan share similar values, economies and visions for the future. Bolstered by our strong friendship and drive for new innovations, I’m confident this is just the beginning of success for both Indiana and Japan as we work together to advance next-generation manufacturing, develop the future of mobility, and experience exciting times ahead.”

Gov. Holcomb arrived in Japan on Friday, Sept. 8, along with representatives of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), including Chief Strategy Officer Ann Lathrop. On Saturday, Gov. Holcomb and the delegation traveled to Gunma Prefecture, which is home to a robust manufacturing sector and several Japanese manufacturers that have operations in Indiana, including Subaru Corporation (Lafayette), Chiyoda Manufacturing Corporation (Greencastle), Elsa Corporation (Elwood), Heartland Automotive (Greencastle and Lafayette), TOA USA (Mooresville and Winchester), NHK Seating of America (Frankfort) and Yajima Industry (West Lafayette).

In Gunma Prefecture, Gov. Holcomb met with Governor Ichita Yamamoto to build on the formal Indiana-Gunma Prefecture partnership established in September 2022, discussing opportunities to advance collaboration across business, innovation and community. The delegation also attended a cultural and business reception hosted by Gov. Yamamoto and prefectural leadership to meet with Japanese business and industry leaders and thank them for their contributions to Indiana’s economy.

On Sunday, Gov. Holcomb kicked off the annual Midwest U.S.-Japan Association conference in Tokyo, joining governments of 10 U.S. Midwestern states, eight Japanese prefectures and approximately 100 corporations to advance partnerships across the two regions. There, the Governor met with U.S. and Japanese officials, including U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, and delivered remarks to the conference on Monday morning, highlighting Indiana’s decades-long relationship with Japan, the state’s robust economy, and opportunities for future growth and innovation across key sectors like the future of mobility, advanced manufacturing, and energy storage and generation.

On Monday, Gov. Holcomb met with Japanese government leaders, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yoshimasa Hayashi, and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura, to discuss the longstanding partnerships between Indiana and Japan and opportunities to support one another’s community and economic development initiatives. The next day, the Governor also met with Tochigi Prefecture Governor Tomikazu Fukuda, recognizing the prefecture’s 24-year sister state relationship with Indiana.

In Tokyo, Gov. Holcomb and the delegation also met with executives of some of Indiana’s largest Japanese investors, including Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Company and Hitachi Ltd., thanking the businesses for creating new Hoosier jobs, supporting the development of Indiana’s workforce, and investing in Hoosier communities through philanthropy and state strategies like the Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative  (READI). The delegation also attended a business roundtable with Keidanren, Japan’s largest business lobby, highlighting Indiana as a competitive investment location and innovation partner to business prospects, and with the Chairman and CEO of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to showcase the state’s focus on industries of the future.

Holcomb and the IEDC wrapped up the economic development trip with a Friends of Indiana reception in Tokyo, hosting key government partners, including Ambassador Emanuel; Japanese businesses invested in or interested in investing in Indiana; Indiana businesses with operations in Japan; as well as Hoosiers living and working in Japan.

This is Gov. Holcomb’s 16th international trip as governor and his third official trip to Japan. Indiana is home to more than 1,050 foreign-owned business establishments, including more than 300 from Japan that account for more than 60,900 Hoosier jobs. Since 2003, Japanese businesses have committed to investing more than $10 billion in Indiana and creating more than 25,600 new jobs. Among all U.S. states, Indiana hosts the largest amount of Japanese investment per capita.

Dreamforce

Gov. Holcomb concluded his trip in San Francisco where he participated in a panel discussion at Dreamforce 2023. The governor joined New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu and Marc Benioff, co-founder and CEO of Salesforce, and discussed technology infrastructure, public policy and the significant role AI will play on the future workforce and how it can benefit all Hoosiers..

Gushrowski and Romashkin tie for third place

CHESTERTON, Ind. – Completing an excellent tournament all the way around, the University of Evansville men’s golf team posted the lowest team score of the day to wrap up the Valpo Fall Invitational at Sand Creek Country Club.

Posting a score of 289, the Purple Aces clinched the second position in the team standings with Valparaiso taking top honors by 13 strokes.  Nicholas Gushrowski and Daniil Romashkin led the way for UE, tying for third on the individual side with 3-round totals of 219.  Both carded even scores of 72 in the final round to finish just two strokes behind second place finisher Artemiy Yalovenko of DePaul.

Andres Rodriguez finished in 11th place.  Posting a 73 in the third round, Rodriguez matched his low score of the weekend and completed the tournament with a 224.  Just two behind him was Caleb Wassmer.  He improved in each of the three rounds.  After opening the contest with an 80, Wassmer recorded a 74 in round two and had his best round of the weekend on Tuesday.  An even 72 gave him a 226, earning a tie for 14th.

Finishing with a total of 233 strokes, Michael Ikejiani tied for 37th.  He posted an 81 in the final 18 holes.  Carson Parker was the top performer among UE’s three individuals.  Wrapping up the final day with a 73, Parker totaled a 226 over the three rounds and tied for 14th.  Masatoyo Kato checked in with a 79 int eh final round to complete play with a 236 while Eli Rohleder matched Kato’s score on Tuesday.  His 79 gave him a 3-round score of 244.

Top individual honors went to Valpo’s Caleb VanArragon.  He posted his third round in the 60’s, tallying a 68.  His 201 was 16 strokes ahead of second place.  The Beacons also took the team championship.  Their 869 bested UE by 13 shots.

Next on the docket for the Aces is the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate.  It will take place on October 2nd and 3rd.

THUNDERBOLTS RE-SIGN FORWARD MATHIEU CLOUTIER

Evansville, In.:  The Evansville Thunderbolts and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Bes are pleased to announce the re-signing of forward Mathieu Cloutier for the 2023-24 season.  The Thunderbolts’ 2023-24 season will get underway on Saturday, October 21st at Ford Center as they host the Huntsville Havoc.

Cloutier returns to the Thunderbolts after playing 39 games for Evansville in 2022-23, scoring 10 goals and 14 points in 39 games.  The native of Gatineau, Quebec previously played for the Peoria Rivermen in 2021-22, scoring 7 goals and 17 points in 40 games.  Prior to turning professional, Cloutier played junior hockey for his hometown Gatineau Flames of the QJHL, scoring 49 goals and 113 points in 140 games between 2017-2020.  In reaction to returning to the Thunderbolts for a second season, Cloutier commented: “I am so excited to be coming back to Evansville.  There is nothing better than the energy from our fans at Ford Center on game night.”

In reaction to re-signing Cloutier, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Bes commented: “Mathieu is entering his third professional season and has tons of skill, we are excited to see him flourish this season.”

USI to host Evansville Mayoral Debate October 18 in USI Performance Center

The University of Southern Indiana will host an Evansville Mayoral Debate, presented by WNIN Public Media, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 18 in the USI Performance Center on campus. The debate will feature the three Evansville mayoral candidates: Republican Natalie Rascher, Democrat Stephanie Terry and Libertarian Michael Daugherty. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and guests are asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m.

The debate, moderated by John Gibson, WNIN News Manager, Producer and local Morning Edition Host, will be broadcast on 9.1 WNIN PBS member television station, NPR member station WNIN FM 88.3 and live streamed on wnin.org in front of a live audience. The event is open to students, faculty, staff and the public. No tickets are required; however, seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Overflow seating with live streaming will be available in University Center East Rooms 2217-18.

Hosting for the debate is being organized by the University in collaboration with the USI Political Science, Public Administration and Philosophy Department.

Media will be invited to attend a press conference with candidates following the debate.

Evansville residents will cast their votes for Mayor during the November 7 local election.

Attorney General Todd Rokita warns Hoosiers to beware of scammers sending texts and emails claiming shipping-and-delivery issues

Attorney General Todd Rokita is advising Hoosiers to watch for texts and emails informing them of shipping-and-delivery issues with items they supposedly have ordered.

Scammers are flooding inboxes with these false claims in an effort to steal personal information and/or lure victims into unknowingly downloading malware onto their computers or phones.

“Our team works hard to bring scammers to justice,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Working with partners in law enforcement, we’re regularly catching and prosecuting more of these criminals. At the same time, another big part of our mission is raising awareness among all Hoosiers about these various scams so they can spot them and avoid falling into their traps.”

The fraudulent emails and texts often contain links purported to help the consumer track a package — when in reality those links connect to malicious websites.

These scam messages typically appear to come from such sources as Amazon, FedEx, the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and others.

An example of such a text received by an Indiana resident is below.

If you receive an email or text of this nature, DO NOT click on any links or reply in any manner.

Instead, if you believe there is any possibility such a message could be valid, simply contact the delivery carrier yourself by navigating to the appropriate website — without using any contact information provided in the suspicious text or email.

“Sanders Spotlight” to be displayed at USI New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art

The University of Southern Indiana’s New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) is proud to present “Sanders Spotlight,” an exhibition showcasing a selection of works in the University art collection by previous James A. Sanders Gallery Fellows.

“Sanders Spotlight” is on display now through October 14, opening with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 14, in conjunction with New Harmony Second Saturdays. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

In 2008, Sanders, Director Emeritus for Corporate and Foundation Relations and former Director of Historic New Harmony, provided funding for a one-year fellowship to support one or more students interested in exhibition design, publicity, curation and management at an art gallery through supervised applied training with the University Art Collection and at the Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries on the USI campus and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, located in historic New Harmony, Indiana.

At each location, the fellow is assigned a project that supports the mission of the organization. In addition, there are opportunities to learn different aspects of caring for an art collection and managing a non-profit art gallery. In the newly created BG (Back Gallery) Projects at the NHGCA, a fellow will have the opportunity to curate their own exhibition. The fellow is required to complete a journal that describes the project and experiences of the fellowship. This fellowship connects the recipient(s) with art professionals in the region and aids in networking for future career opportunities. As of June 2023, 30 students have benefited from the James A. Sanders Fellowship at USI.

Sanders had a distinguished career in education, teaching in the Henderson, Kentucky, and Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporations. In 1985, he left teaching to become the University’s first Director of Historic New Harmony, where he was able to combine his marketing knowledge with his interest in historic preservation.

Under Sanders’s management, he moved the organization’s focus from restoration to education, built the assets of the USI-New Harmony Foundation, developed new educational exhibits and involved the residents of the town of New Harmony in the University’s programs there. After 10 years as Director, Sanders accepted a position as Director of Corporate Relations at USI. He also gave leadership to the establishment of the Art Collection Committee and obtained funding to support the teaching collection.

The NHGCA is dedicated to enhancing the experiences of students through an artist-run exhibition space in the Back Gallery. Back Gallery Projects at NHGCA allows students to exhibit, experiment and/or curate within a working contemporary art gallery setting. Through exhibition and curatorial strategies, students can envision new possibilities for collaborations and their art practice.

NHGCA promotes discourse about and access to contemporary art in the Southern Indiana region.

USI’s Grafton and Markland claim OVC weekly honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer sophomore defender Charli Grafton (Sunriver, Oregon) and sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) claimed Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. Grafton was named OVC co-Defensive Player of the Week and Markland was named co-Goalkeeper of the Week for the second consecutive week.
 
Grafton picks up her first accolade of the season, while Markland has her second. Grafton and Markland helped lead USI’s defensive unit to a second consecutive 1-1 tie last Thursday against the University of Kansas City, pushing USI’s unbeaten streak to three matches. Against a potent offense from the Roos, Grafton and Markland kept the match low scoring.
 
In the centerback position, Grafton won 70 percent of her defensive duels and 100 percent of aerial duels. Plus, Grafton had nine clearances, eight interceptions, three blocked shots, and a 70 percent distribution rate out of the back in a full 90 minutes against Kansas City.
 
Between the posts, Markland had another sensational performance in goal for USI last Thursday to get the road result to conclude the non-conference season. On her toes from the opening kickoff, Markland made a career-best nine saves. Markland was strong in facing 28 shots by the Roos, the most shot attempts the Screaming Eagles have seen this season.
 
On the season, Grafton has started every match and played every minute so far. Markland has also started all nine matches, posting a 1.27 GAA with 36 saves. She ranks second in the OVC in GAA and fifth in saves.

Grafton, Markland and the Eagles (1-5-3) open conference play in the OVC on Thursday against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock at 6 p.m. The match begins a two-game road swing this weekend to start conference play for USI, who will visit Tennessee Tech University on Sunday.
