EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball released its 2023-24 non-conference schedule, beginning November 6 with a home matchup against Wright State University. USI will host 16 home dates at Screaming Eagles Arena this year.

The November 6 home game against Wright State starts a three-game homestand to tip off the season for USI. Southern Indiana will also face Oakland City University on November 12 and Northern Illinois University on November 16. The Screaming Eagles’ home schedule also includes a December 1 game against Murray State University. USI’s non-conference home slate concludes with another three-game homestand, featuring matchups against Eastern Michigan University on December 9, University of Cincinnati on December 17, and Brescia University (Ky.) on December 22.

“We have put together another non-conference schedule that I think our fans will be very excited about,” USI Women’s Basketball Head Coach Rick Stein said. “With a three-game homestand to start the season, and seven home games outside of the Ohio Valley Conference, our fans should have some great opportunities to see our team play early and often!”

The Eagles will travel for three challenging road games during the non-conference season. USI will travel for the first time on November 20 to the University of Missouri, which is followed by a November 26 game at Purdue University. Southern Indiana’s final road contest during the non-conference season is December 6 at Saint Louis University.

“The schedule will be extremely tough again, which we hope will prepare us for Ohio Valley Conference play at the end of December,” Stein added.  “We are excited to play against great teams, including some power-five opponents.  It’s not too often we have a chance to host a Big 12 Conference team inside Screaming Eagles Arena like Cincinnati on December 17!”

As announced previously, the home portion of the Ohio Valley Conference schedule features Tennessee State University (January 4), Tennessee Tech University (January 6), the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (January 18), Morehead State University (January 19), Western Illinois University (January 25), Eastern Illinois University (February 8), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (February 10), Lindenwood University (February 29), and Southeast Missouri State University (March 2).

Strong offense powers Golden Eagles past USI Women’s Soccer

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer fell 7-0 against Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. The match concluded a two-game road swing to begin Ohio Valley Conference play for the Screaming Eagles.

Sunday’s defeat ended USI’s four-match unbeaten streak, as the Screaming Eagles moved to 1-6-4 overall and 0-1-1 in OVC action. Tennessee Tech, the reigning OVC regular-season champions, improved to 3-4-3 this season and 2-0-0 in the OVC.

The game started with a solid pace both ways in the first 10 minutes, but the flow quickly switched a couple of minutes later. Tennessee Tech jumped onto the scoreboard when the Golden Eagles’ Yao Giada Zhou converted a penalty kick. Zhou scored twice on Sunday. Tennessee Tech scored again three minutes later. Despite Southern Indiana’s late first-half efforts to get the offense going and get a shot past Tennessee Tech’s goalkeeper, the Golden Eagles’ offensive pressure led to a 4-0 halftime lead for the home team.

USI came out of the intermission with some good possessions, leading to a few shot opportunities. However, about 15 minutes into the second half, Tennessee Tech’s attacking barrage picked up where it left off in the first half. The Golden Eagles added three more goals in a span of seven and a half minutes. The Screaming Eagles continued to fight, firing several shots late in the second stanza but could not find the back of the net on Sunday.

Southern Indiana totaled 14 shots with six on goal, while Tennessee Tech took 19 shots with 11 on goal. Offensively, for USI, sophomores Emma Thurston (Leawood, Kansas) and Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) each took two shots alongside junior Adriana Berruti (Berwyn, Illinois). Thurston placed one shot on goal and Murphy put both of her shots on target. In goal, redshirt freshman Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) made three saves in the first half and junior Zoe Lintner (Wildwood, Missouri) had one save in the second half.

The Screaming Eagles will return to action next Sunday at 1 p.m. from Strassweg Field against Morehead State University. Next Sunday’s game will be the cancer awareness pink game for USI. All in attendance are welcome to wear pink in support.
