VU Golf takes fifth at Mid-West Athletic Conference Fall Preview

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Vincennes University golf team got their first look at the course hosting the Mid-West Athletic Conference tournament in the spring this week, traveling to Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill.

The Blazers came away with a fifth-place finish in the 36-hole, one day event, in a closely packed leaderboard.

VU sophomore Preston Broce (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the low-man for the Blazers Monday, coming up with his third top-10 finish of the fall season after shooting a four-over 76 in round one and a six-over 78 in round two, good for seventh place overall.

Sophomore Aaron Brink (Nashville, Ill.) was again in the two-spot for Vincennes, battling injury to a first round 82 and answering back to move up the leaderboard with a four-over 76 in round two. Brink was well within striking distance of another top-10 finish, coming in at 12th overall.

Freshman Alex Nealis (Olney, Ill.) was the next VU finisher, shooting an 83 in round one and an 80 in round two and finishing 19th overall.

Freshman Dakota Waskom (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out the VU scorers Monday, ending round one with an 85 and coming in with an 83 in round two, placing him 25th overall.

The fifth man for the Blazers was freshman Matt Slover (Salem, Ind.) who shot an 88 in round one and a 98 in round two.

“Preston continued to lead us and again had a chance to win it up until the last two holes,” VU Hall of Fame Golf Coach Dennis Chattin said. “He is a really good player and I believe he will win a tournament. Aaron had another good tournament, finishing 12th and was playing injured.”

“We were handicapped by not getting a practice round due to a scheduling conflict at the course and I think that could have made the difference for Preston and the rest of the game,” Chattin added. “Not trying to make excuses but three of the top teams were the ones that got the practice rounds.”

VU as a team shot a 326 in round one, before taking nine shots off their score in round two with a 317, good for fifth overall.

Vincennes does have the ability to really jump up the leaderboard in the Spring as fifth place and second place Monday were separated by only 14 shots.

The Trailblazers will look to continue to improve as the fall season begins to wind down, with VU heading to Ina, Ill. Monday, Oct. 9 and Tuesday, Oct. 10 to face-off against Rend Lake College at the Rend Lake Golf Course.

Vincennes will then have three weeks to prepare for the Fall season finale in Camdenton, Mo. for the Battle in the Ozarks at Old Kinderhook Resort, Monday, Oct. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 31.

“The golf course was tough as shown by the high scores, even though the conditions were really good,” Chattin said. “The greens caused the most problems as they were quick and with a lot of slope. I asked the guys after if they could have saved two strokes a round, which would have been very easy to do, by just playing smarter shots and they all agreed. That would have been very easy but that would have moved us to second, so I continue to believe we are close to finishing much higher but we will find out next week at Rend Lake.”

Eagles fly to Texas for OVC matches

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer flies to Texas for the first time in the Ohio Valley Conference when it visits Houston Christian University Thursday and The University of the Incarnate Word Sunday. Match time versus HCU in Houston, Texas, is 7 p.m. while kick off at UIW in San Antonio is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Screaming Eagles (1-8-0, 0-2-0 OVC) are in the middle of a three-match road swing that started with Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Lindenwood University. USI is hoping a trip south will help it recapture the magic it found in the victory over Northern Kentucky University during the homestand.

HCU (2-5-3, 0-1-1) opened OVC action last week with a tie at UIW, 3-3, and a loss at Liberty University, 3-1. UIW (3-4-3, 1-0-1 OVC) followed its tie with HCU with a win over Chicago State University, 3-2, to remain unbeaten after the first weekend of OVC play.

USI will be playing HCU and UIW for the first time in the history of the program.

Following the end of the three-match road swing, USI returns to Strassweg Field for a three-match homestand October 12 when it hosts Chicago State University. The Eagles and the Cougars will be facing each other in the OVC for the first time after competing last year in The Summit League.

The remainder of the homestand will include a first-time meeting with Liberty University October 15 and a match-up with Eastern Illinois University October 19. USI host Senior Day on October 15 versus Liberty.

This groundbreaking initiative, introduced by Governor Eric Holcomb, promises an additional $500 million in funding for quality of place projects across the state of Indiana.

The READI 2.0 program builds upon the success of its predecessor, READI 1.0. In READI 1.0 the Evansville Region was awarded $50 million which has already supported over 20 transformative projects in our region, from workforce housing in Gibson County to a riverfront strategic plan that spans Warrick, Vanderburgh, and Posey counties. This new wave of funding will allow our region to continue building a stronger and more resilient community.

E-REP CEO, Tara Barney, stated, “We are deeply grateful for Governor Holcomb’s continued dedication to economic development in Indiana. READI 2.0 offers us the chance to not only enhance our region’s quality of place but also to position the Evansville region as a destination for talent, innovation, and economic growth.”

The READI 2.0 program presents a unique opportunity for our community to tackle challenges, seize opportunities, and enhance the overall appeal of Evansville and the surrounding region.

ABOUT THE INDIANA DO NOT CALL LIST BLOCKING UNWANTCALLED

About the Indiana Do Not Call List Blocking Unwanted Calls

The Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division is dedicated to protecting consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls.

In June 2015, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) declared that federal law does not prohibit phone carriers from blocking robocalls and robotexts before they reach residential landlines or cell phones. The Attorney General is urging telephone companies that do not currently provide comprehensive call-blocking service to make it available to customers as soon as possible.

Do Not Call List

All Indiana residents can register their home, wireless or VOIP telephone numbers on the state’s Do Not Call list at any time. The service is free and easy to use. The list is updated quarterly on the first of each January, April, July and October.

To register your number click here.

You can also call 1.888.834.9969 to add your number to the Do Not Call list.

If you’d like to verify your number is already on the Do Not Call list, click here.

Once your phone number has been added to the list there is no need to re-register. However, you will need to update your registration if your phone number or address changes.

Who Can Call You – And Who Can’t

Most telemarketers are forbidden from calling or texting numbers on the Do Not Call list. There are four types of telephone solicitors who are exempt from this law and may continue to contact you. These include charitable organizations (whose calls are made by volunteers or employees), newspapers (whose employees make their telephone calls) and licensed insurance and real estate agents. Indiana law does not allow companies with existing business relationships to make sales calls to you unless you have provided your permission to do so.

Robo Calls

Technology enables telemarketers to dial numbers and deliver pre-recorded sales messages, known as robo calls. Indiana law prohibits this practice and requires a live phone operator to obtain permission before playing a pre-recorded message. Federal law makes it illegal to use automatic dialing equipment to call cell phone numbers. If you receive a call you suspect to be a robo call, even if your number is not on the Do Not Call list, you may file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office. Exceptions include calls from school districts to students, parents, or employees and businesses advising employees of work schedules.

Political Calls

It is illegal for political campaigns to robocall Hoosiers. If campaigns want to play a prerecorded message, a live operator must first have initiated the call and received the recipient’s permission, either by a prerecorded request to leave a message or the recipient must have previously opted into receiving such calls.

If an individual does not want to receive automated political voicemails, they should make it clear in their voice mail or answering machine prompt that they only wish to receive the name and number of the person calling.

Campaigns and political groups are allowed to make traditional “live” calls, even to numbers registered on the Do Not Call list, as long as the calls are not sales calls.

Campaigns can follow this guide to ensure they adhere to Indiana’s telephone privacy laws.

Wireless Telephone Text Messages

The new law provides that a “telephone sales call” includes a text message sent to your wireless telephone number. If your wireless telephone number is registered on the Do Not Call list, then a telemarketer may not send you a solicitation by text.

National Do Not Call List

Indiana citizens may also register with the National Do Not Call list. For more information visit http://www.donotcall.gov/ or call 1.888.382.1222.

Remove Your Number from the List

If you would like to revoke your registration, you may do so by clicking here.

Report Do Not Call Violators

The Attorney General’s Office is committed to ensuring Indiana’s Do Not Call law is enforced. If you are on the Do Not Call list and you get a call from a telemarketer after the relevant quarterly list update, you can report it by filing a complaint. You may also call 1.888.834.9969 to request a complaint form.

Please provide as much information as you can, including the name of the telemarketing company, the location from which they are calling, the name of the person calling the phone number and the product or service they called to sell.

Once you’ve completed the complaint form, mail it to:
