FSSA announces $25 million grant to address working Hoosiers’ child care needs

Employer-sponsored funds will increase the supply of available childcare, and benefits across the state

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning today announced the Employer-Sponsored Child Care Fund, part of Gov. Eric J. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, to mobilize employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers.

“Employers know first-hand the critical needs of their employees, and are best positioned to partner in their communities to create child care solutions that will help build and retain their workforce,” Gov. Holcomb said. “This targeted grant program will boost Indiana’s economy and most importantly empower the state’s youngest learners with the tools they need to be successful in the years to come.”

The $25 million program, a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, uses a portion of the state’s remaining federal relief funds from the COVID-19 pandemic and is part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen the early care and education sector, providing support for today’s workforce and investing in tomorrow’s. The program is also supported by the Indiana Manufacturers Association.

Grant funding can be used to support employees’ child care needs in a variety of ways, including sponsoring dependent care assistance plans, providing on-site or near-site child care or offering child care tuition benefits. Grants of up to $750,000 will be awarded. The full list of allowable uses and details can be found here. 

“Families will benefit from more convenient child care options in their communities, giving children the opportunity to learn, grow and develop alongside their peers,” said Courtney Penn, OECOSL director. “This grant will give parents more opportunities to learn, grow and develop in their careers as well.”

To be eligible, employers must be located in Indiana and either a business or corporation employing 20 or more employees, a group of employers with 20 or more employees or a community-based nonprofit applying on behalf of a group of local employers with a combined total of 20 or more employees. Employers must also be willing to contribute 10% of the total amount requested and be able to implement solutions within the first year of the program.

Murder Investigation 2600 blk Mount Vernon Ave.

 On October 22nd, around 3:30 p.m., Evansville Police Officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Mount Vernon Ave. in reference to a death investigation. The reporter found two individuals inside the residence who were deceased. Officers arrived and located the two victims who were beyond help. They were both adult males and their deaths appeared to be suspicious. This is being treated as a Murder Investigation. Detectives with the EPD Adult Investigations Unit and EPD Crime Scene Unit were called to the scene. 

This investigation is still active and at this time, no arrests have been made. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death. The victims’ names and the cause of death will be released at a later date/time. If anyone has information regarding this investigation, please contact the Adult Investigation Unit at (812) 436-7979.

USI Women’s Swim and Dive place sixth in Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate Invite

West Lafayette, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana Women’s Swimming and Diving continued their Indiana road trip in West Lafayette on Saturday competing in the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Purdue University. Ten other Indiana schools competed in the event including Anderson University, Ball State University, Bethel University, Franklin College, Indiana Wesleyan, IUPUI, Purdue University, USI, Rose-Hulman, and Butler University. The Screaming Eagles finished sixth among the ten schools.

The Eagles came out a little slow, but were kick started by Freshman Caiya Cooper (LaPorte, Indiana) with a solid 200 yard freestyle time (1:58.31). Sophomore Sarah-Catherine Dawson (Prospect, Kentucky) nearly broke her own school record that she set on Friday night posting an impressive 100 yard butterfly time (58.90).

Freshman Hayden Shurtz (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) went on a tear Saturday dazzling in the 100 yard individual medley breaking a school record (1:01.92). Shurtz almost shattered her own record from Friday’s meet in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.66).

Freshman Maranda Uttke (Grafton, Wisconsin) tallied 195.00 points in the three-meter dive event.

EVANSVILLE – On November 1, 2023, community leaders will gather at BALLY’S-Evansville to observe the City-County Observer bestowing several “Community Service Awards” and a “MALE and FEMALE” Of The Year Awards to deserving individuals or organizations who are well-known leaders and volunteers throughout our community.

With extreme pleasure and pride, we announce our final well-deserving “CCO MAN OF THE YEAR Award” winner for 2023 the renowned Television and Radio legend  MIKE BLAKE. The 2023 CCO “FEMALE of The YEAR”, award winner is a political icon. CONNIE ROBINSON.

The City-County Observer recently announced our third (3) deserving “Community Service Award” winners for 2023. They are the well-respected Daniela Vidal Chancellor of IVY Tech Community College and the Honorable Vanderburgh County Superior Court Judge, Tom Massey, and Southwestern Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council Selected CCO “2023 Organization Of The Year”

Steve Hammer and County Commissioner Ben Shoulders are Co-Chairmen of the 2023 “Community Services Award Luncheon”  They are also excited to announce that D. William Moreau a highly regarded and nationally known attorney and newspaper President/Publisher of the Indiana Citizen newspaper shall be the event Keynote Speaker.

This year’s event Master of Ceremonies will be the Memorial Baptist Church mega preacher and publisher of “Our Times” newspaper, Dr. Adrian Brooks.

This year’s awards luncheon will be held at Bally’s-Evansville in Walnut rooms A and B.  Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., and the event will officially start at noon on November 1, 2022.

ABOUT MIKE BLAKE THE CITY-COUNTY OBSERVER 2023 “MAN 0F THE YEAR” WINNER 

After graduating with a master’s degree in radio, television, and film from the University of Iowa in 1968, Mike Blake entered the U.S. Army.  He served two years, including the final 11 months on with the Armed Forces Vietnam network.  In September 1970, he began a remarkable career in the Evansville market, starting out as a weekday weatherman and weekend sportscaster.

In more than 40 years of sports reporting, Blake has received Associated Press awards for both sports and news work. Over the following decades, he co-anchored the first 5:00 p.m. newscast in Evansville, helped to launch the first Friday night high school football and basketball shows, and continues to host the popular news and community service-oriented show “Midday with Mike.”  He has been elected to five sports halls of fame, including those saluting excellence in Indiana football and basketball

In his nearly 50-year career with WFIE, Blake has held the titles of Weekday Weatherman, Weekend Sportscaster, Sports Director, and News Anchor. He was inducted into the National Television Academy of Arts & Sciences Silver Circle – Ohio Valley Chapter in 2016 and has won the Evansville Living title of “Best of Evansville Sportscaster & Community Champion” six times.

Blake is an active community member, earning the Evansville Leadership Award in 2001 for his work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He has hosted 42 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethons benefiting MDA. He has also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Evansville Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and has received the Steward of St. Vincent DePaul Award presented by the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation.

Blake is a member of five Sports Halls of Fame, including the Indiana Basketball and Football Halls of Fame. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1980, received a key to the city of Owensboro in 2000, and a Mike Blake bobblehead was unveiled in 2003.

He is a graduate of Loras College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and the University of Iowa with a Masters in Speech and Dramatic Arts. After graduating, Blake served in the United States Army and spent eight months on the Armed Forces Vietnam Network Radio and TV network.

Blake and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for 46 years and have four children – Christine, Michael, Bill, and Patrick – and nine grandchildren.

Living in a city as large as ours, how do we not have a decent public playground for our children?
Mickey’s Kingdom is only 5 years old this month… but it was disheartening to discover yesterday when I stopped by with my younger two kiddos, the shape countless pieces of equipment were in and the overall complete lack of maintenance, which has led to the current sad state the park is in now and how it could have even happened in such a short amount of time…
As a #MamaOf5 in this community, it angers me… It also raises an extremely valid question 🤔
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, I vividly recall the day YOU cut the ribbon and the words YOU spoke at a said ceremony… yet, I sit here today and can’t help but wonder, I get it, it was a nice photo-op but the reality is, it feels like yet another broken promise 🤷🏽‍♀️

This begs an even bigger, more serious question… why should I or any other parent in this community support Natalie Rascher – who proudly touts to give us 4 more years of “Winnecke’s Evansville”?!?
I don’t know about anyone else, but this gal is not interested…
I want someone interested in more than making appearances… I want someone interested in making actual changes.

Annual Chili Bowl Sale Returns for 21st Year at University of Evansville

On Tuesday, October 31, the hearty smell of chili will fill the air at the University of Evansville (UE) when the Clay Club holds its 21st annual Chili Bowl Sale.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or until the bowls and chili run out, UE Clay Club members will serve chili from open-air cauldrons on the East Terrace Lawn near the Ridgway University Center.

This community event draws not only UE students and staff but also friends from afar. Customers select a one-of-a-kind ceramic bowl made by UE art students, enjoy chili for lunch, and keep the bowl.

For $10, attendees can purchase a unique ceramic bowl and fill it with chili. For those who prefer to preserve their pristine bowls, lidded containers will also be available. The event also offers larger, handcrafted bowls, priced between $15 and $100, making it a must-attend for both chili lovers and art enthusiasts.

A significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local food organization, furthering UE’s commitment to fighting hunger within the community. The remaining funds will be allocated to the UE Clay Club, providing essential support for students’ attendance at conferences, hosting visiting artists, and embarking on studio and gallery visits.
