Aces home to face SIU and Missouri State

CHICAGO – A quick start saw the University of Evansville volleyball team saw them earn a win in the first set before Chicago State rallied to take the final three games to take a 3-1 win over the Purple Aces on Monday evening.

Melanie Feliciano added nine kills while Madisyn Steele finished the evening with six.  Lexi Owen paced the team with 25 assists while Ainoah Cruz tallied 19 digs.  Yanlis Feliz was one of three Cougars to post double-digit kills, finishing with 11.

Game 1 – UE 25, CSU 21

Blakely Freeman got the night started with an ace before Giulia Cardona added two of her own to give Evansville an 11-7 lead.  Luana Gazda Kuhn recorded a kill to give the Aces a game-high 20-13 lead.  Chloe Cline, Melanie Feliciano and Madisyn Steele all picked up late kills to seal the set and give UE a 1-0 lead.

Game 2 – CSU 25, UE 21

Chicago State had a quick start, scoring the opening three points before extending the advantage to 9-4.  Another kill by the Cougars saw them double up on UE, taking a 14-7 lead.  Led by a Feliciano kill and a Lexi Owen ace, Evansville stormed back to make it a 15-12 game.

Following a time out, the Cougars pushed the lead back up to six points (21-15), but the Aces clawed their way back once again.  Two Feliciano kills, another ace from Freeman and a block by Steele and Cline comprised a 6-0 run that knotted the set at 21-21.  CSU overcame the rally and scored the final four points to tie the match.

Game 3 – CSU 25, UE 20

Freeman’s third ace of the night helped Evansville take a 2-0 lead.  Chicago State came back with an 8-2 run to hold an 8-4 edge, but the Aces went on the attack once again.  Madisyn Steele’s solo block capped off a an 11-6 run that put the Aces on top at 15-14.

Things turned the Cougar’s way as a 3-0 run turned a 17-17 tie into a 20-17 lead and they would complete the set with a 25-20 win to open a 2-1 match lead.

Game 4 – CSU 25, UE 16

After scoring the first five points of the set, the Cougars opened a 19-5 lead.  While Evansville would significantly cut into the deficit, Chicago State clinched the match with a 25-16 win.

Evansville returns to Meeks Family Fieldhouse this weekend to face Missouri State and Southern Illinois.

BRAUN, HIRONO’S KOREAN AMERICAN VALOR ACT HEADS TO PRESIDENT’S DESK TO BE SIGNED INTO LAW

This bipartisan bill allows South Korean immigrants who served in the armed forces of the Republic of Korea alongside American troops during the Vietnam War to access health care services through the Department of Veterans Affairs, paid for by the Korean government

WASHINGTON – The bipartisan Korean American VALOR Act introduced by Senator Mike Braun and Senator Mazie Hirono passed the Senate and is headed to the President’s desk to be signed into law. This legislation will allow the approximately 3,000 Korean American Vietnam War veterans that have since become naturalized American citizens to enroll in VA healthcare paid for by the South Korean government.

The House companion was led by Representative Mark Takano, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The bill passed the House of Representatives in May.

“This legislation guarantees that the men and women who bravely fought alongside U.S. troops and have become American citizens will have access to the care and benefits they deserve, paid for by the South Korean government.” – Senator Mike Braun

“Thanks to the Korean American VALOR Act, approximately 3,000 Korean American veterans in Hawaii and across the country will be able to access medical services through the VA. I am glad our bill has passed the Senate and will soon be signed into law, to help ensure our veterans have access to the quality VA healthcare they need and deserve.” – Senator Mazie Hirono

“I am thrilled by the overwhelming bipartisan support across both chambers for Korean American Vietnam veterans who fought alongside American forces to get the VA healthcare that they deserve. This measure is long overdue, and I urge President Biden to sign my bill into law as soon as possible.” – Representative Mark Takano

Oliver’s Heroes K-9 Charity

A newly formed charity created by a local restaurateur and members of the Sheriff’s Office will hold their inaugural golf scramble this Friday, October 27, 2023.

Oliver’s Heroes was formed by Mr. Joe Sells, owner of Rounder’s Too in Daylight, Indiana. The charity directly benefits retired K-9s, paying for their veterinarian care and nutritional needs.

The Sheriff’s Office has no funding to support K-9s once they retire and separate from the agency. Oliver’s Heroes ensures these animals that have given so much to our community are properly supported during their remaining years.

Evansville’s Annual Fall Leaf Collection Starts October 30

0

EVANSVILLE, IND. – Starting October 30, and continuing through December 8, 2023, Evansville residents who pay for trash service with their monthly Evansville Water and Sewer Utility bill can participate in the annual Fall Leaf Collection Program. During this period, eligible residents can place properly bagged leaves next to the curb for pickup by Republic Services on their regular trash collection day.

 How it works

  • Leaves must be contained in biodegradable plastic or paper leaf bags or in containers.
  • Bags must be in manageable, organized piles and placed curbside near the trash and recycling carts.
  • Bags and containers should be at the pickup location before 6 a.m. on the day of your normal trash collection.
  • Bags should be placed at the pickup location on your normal day of trash collection, not days in advance.

Leaves not in biodegradable bags or that do not meet these requirements will not be picked up. If leaves are not in biodegradable bags, residents will be notified and asked to re-bag leaves properly for pick-up the following week. If residents feel they have complied with the requirements but their leaves were not picked up, they should call Republic Services at 812-424-3345 within two days after their regular trash collection day.

 Who is not eligible

Apartment complexes, mobile home communities, business and commercial customers, and Utility customers who live outside the City of Evansville are not eligible. The service is for City residents only who pay for trash and recycling service with their monthly water and sewer bill.

 Heavy Trash

Heavy trash pickups will not be scheduled during the Fall Leaf Collection Program. Heavy trash pickups will resume on Monday, December 11, 2023.

Sobieralski’s stellar performance leads to OVC weekly honor

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Junior setter Carly Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Indiana) was named Ohio Valley Conference Setter of the Week for the second time this season after her historic performance last weekend for University of Southern Indiana Volleyball.

The Screaming Eagles went 1-1 in their weekend slate after defeating Western Illinois, 3-1, on Friday then falling to the Leathernecks, 3-2, on Saturday. The Eagles racked up 144 kills with a stellar 0.285 hitting percentage to pair with 13 aces, 21 blocks, and 178 digs. USI goes into the week in a tie for fifth in the OVC standings with a 6-6 conference record.

Friday’s contest resulted in a career-high 65 assists for the Indianapolis native to pair with 11 digs, four blocks, and three aces. On Saturday, Sobieralski put up 62 assists and 22 digs which marks the first time since Stephanie Wilson in 2005 that a USI setter has earned at least 60 assists and 20 digs in a match. She also was the first player in the OVC to secure 60+ assists in a single conference match and did it in back-to-back games. In the last two matches, Sobieralski totaled a league-leading 127 assists with over 14 assists per set and led the conference setters in digs and aces with 33 and four, respectively.

The Eagles, who are 10-13 overall, are on their bye week and will return to action next weekend when USI hosts Tennessee Tech University in a crucial homestand. There will be free postgame poster signings after Friday’s match while Saturday’s match will be Senior Day where USI will honor their four seniors. Both matches will have a heavy impact on seeding for the conference tournament in late November.
