BRAUN, 8 REPUBLICANS DEMAND ANY ISRAEL AID PACKAGE BE STRIPPED OF UKRAINE FUNDING
WASHINGTON –Â Today, U.S. Senator Mike Braun and 8 colleagues sent a letter to Senate Leadership requesting any federal assistance to Israel not be leveraged for more Ukraine funding. It has been reported that President Biden plans to pair tens of billions of dollars to Ukraine with any new request for federal assistance for Israel.
Senator Braun was joined in support of the letter by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rick Scott (R-FL), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Roger Marshall (R-KS), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Josh Hawley (R-MO).
In the letter, the senators highlighted that these are two separate and unrelated conflicts that cannot be considered as a ‘package deal.’ Any attempt to give additional money to Ukraine risks complicating the process and prolonging the time it will take to get aid to our ally Israel.
Excerpts from the letter below:
“We write today in the wake of over 1,400 Israeli civilians and at least 30 American citizens having been killed over the last week after brutal Hamas terrorists invaded Israel,â€Â the Senators wrote.
“In response to these developments, it is critical we give prompt consideration to any request for financial aid or other material support requested by Israel. Based on the breadth of responses from members of Congress, there is a shared urgency to consider such a request,â€Â the letter continues.
“That being said, we know there will no doubt be efforts to attach any funding to Israel to more aid to Ukraine, in excess of the already $113 billion Congress has provided to Ukraine,â€Â the Senators continued. “These are two separate and unrelated conflicts and it would be wrong to leverage support of aid to Israel in attempt to get additional aid for Ukraine across the finish line.â€
“Furthermore, it would be irresponsible and we should not risk a government shutdown by bundling these priorities together and thus complicating the process and lessening the likelihood of a funding package,â€Â the Senators wrote.
“We urge you to keep separate attempts to provide military aid to Israel from additional funds to Ukraine or other matters,â€Â the letter concludes.
IU student Jill Behrman’s killer to stay locked up after Attorney General Todd Rokita and team prevail in federal court
Attorney General Todd Rokita and his team have successfully ensured that the criminal who murdered Indiana University student Jill Behrman in 2000 will remain behind bars.
“The wheels of justice might turn slowly at times, but we take comfort in knowing we have achieved the proper outcome in this case,†Attorney General Rokita said. “This vicious predator attacked and killed a young woman out innocently enjoying a bike ride, and Jill’s family since that time has endured a long and drawn-out investigatory and legal process. They will always mourn their loss, but we pray that God will grant them a measure of closure and peace.â€
A U.S. district court this week denied a habeas petition filed by John Myers challenging his conviction for Behrman’s murder.
Behrman’s remains were found in 2003, three years after her disappearance. Myers was arrested and convicted in 2006.
In 2019, the U.S. district court initially granted Myers’s habeas petition, reversing his conviction and ordering a new trial. His attorneys repeatedly pushed for his early release from prison, even citing COVID-19 concerns in 2020. But the Office of the Attorney General successfully appealed that decision, and the case was remanded for more proceedings — leading ultimately to this week’s decision.
Attorney General Rokita thanked his criminal appeals team, and specifically Assistant Section Chief Jesse Drum, for their work on this case.
This week’s court order is linked here.

Friedreich’s Ataxia is a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder that affects one in 50,000 people in the United States. Most individuals have onset of symptoms of FA between the ages of 5 and 18, but it can occur anything during adulthood. The Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) is supporting research that will improve the quality and length of life for those diagnosed with FA and will hopefully lead to treatments that eliminate its symptoms. More information about FA can be found at CureFA.org.
Evansville finished last year with a 37-24 overall record and the Purple Aces advanced to the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. USI posted a 17-38 overall record in its first year of transition to the NCAA Division I level.

EVANSVILLE, IND. (10/19/2023) On Tuesday, October 31, the hearty smell of chili will fill the air at the University of Evansville (UE) when the Clay Club holds its 21st annual Chili Bowl Sale.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or until the bowls and chili run out, UE Clay Club members will serve chili from open-air cauldrons on the East Terrace Lawn near the Ridgway University Center.
