USI B/MD Scholar overcomes challenges to obtain dream job

0

For students pursuing a career in the medical field, the University of Southern Indiana Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine (B/MD) scholarship program offers an opportunity to earn a scholarship for their undergraduate studies and receive the best access to pre-medical advising. For Gunnar Lynch ’20, biology major, the program impacted every facet of his college experience.

Lynch considered many other in-state schools, but ultimately chose USI because it was where he felt most at home. Every person he met “seemed to take an interest in [him] as a person, and the campus was always so vibrant and alive every time [he] visited.”

Through the B/MD program, he gained access to everything needed to excel in his undergraduate program, including expert advising by professors who understand the requirements to successfully enter a graduate program and succeed, study sessions and practice exams to prepare for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), application assistance and mock interviews. Outside the classroom, the program provided him with a family. This support was crucial for Lynch who didn’t have the average college experience.

In the summer before his senior year, he was diagnosed with a rare medical condition called uveal melanoma, a form of eye cancer. This was not his first experience battling cancer as he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a common childhood blood cancer, at just 4 years old. He received treatment over the summer, and after seriously considering stepping away from his studies, decided to return in the Fall and said it was the best decision he could have made. “All my professors, advisors, mentors—every faculty and staff member I met—were completely and totally understanding and accommodating of my situation. I was able to focus on my education and my academic career while also focusing on my own healing—at no time did one of those things compromise the other.”

He credits USI’s faculty, staff and resources like Disability Resources for his ability to persevere through the challenging time and is grateful to the USI community. “I do not know what this situation would have been like had I attended another university where I could not have gotten the chance to know my professors or classmates so well,” he says. “The smaller class sizes and intimate settings offered by USI were exactly the environment I needed to focus on my studies while also focusing on my health.”

Dr. Becky Sparks-Thissen, Associate Professor of Biology and one of the faculty members Lynch credits for his continued success at USI, believes that the flexibility of the B/MD program is key to many of the recipients’ success in their undergraduate careers and beyond. “The B/MD scholarship provides support for students to pursue their academic interests in and outside of medicine. Students can major and/or minor in any subject while completing their requirements for medical school.”

The B/MD program has graduated 75 students since 2004 who are now in medical school or practicing physicians. The scholarship provides four years of tuition and a provisional seat the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Evansville campus.

Ultimately, Lynch decided not to pursue medical school and went on to attend the Physician Assistant (PA) program at the University of Evansville. During the two years of his PA program, Lynch participated in the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Scholar Fellowship. Southwest Indiana AHEC is hosted at USI, and it works to improve health in rural and underserved communities by recruiting, educating and retaining healthcare professionals in those communities. Lynch also participated in AHEC programming in high school through the Health Sciences Education program at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center.

Jane Friona, executive director of Southwest Indiana AHEC, praised Lynch’s dedication and commitment to his healthcare career, “Gunnar has been an exemplary example of an AHEC success story. He engaged with AHEC in high school, stayed connected during his undergraduate years and then reengaged during PA school as an AHEC Scholar, which strengthened his knowledge and ability to provide high quality healthcare.”

This year, Lynch accepted a PA position at Shields, Shields, and Lally Ocular Oncology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the same practice that treated him his senior year for uveal melanoma. “Ever since I was a little boy with leukemia, I have always wanted to do something to help other patients going through similar situations,” he said about his new position. “Being a member of this team finally gives me the opportunity to do that.”

Applications for the B/MD program are open now, and the deadline to apply is November 17. Information about the program and how to apply can be found on the B/MD website.

Attorney General Todd Rokita and team beat the hell out of Satanic Temple’s efforts to sacrifice pro-life law

5

Attorney General Todd Rokita and his legal team achieved an important win for life and the rule of law this week by successfully securing the dismissal of the Satanic Temple’s lawsuit challenging Indiana’s landmark 2022 pro-life law.

“This lawsuit was ridiculous on its face, but this court decision is important because it sustains a pro-life law that is constitutionally and legally sound,” Attorney General Rokita said. “We Hoosiers continue to build a solid culture of life whether satanic cultists like it or not.”

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade in the 2022 Dobbs case, Indiana was the first state in the nation to enact a sweeping pro-life law.

Among other things, the Satanic Temple baselessly argued that Indiana’s pro-life law violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) by criminalizing the exercise of the satanic ritual of abortion.

Attorney General Rokita thanked his team for their work on this case, mentioning in particular the strong efforts of Deputy Solicitor General James Barta, Section Chief of Administrative and Regulatory Enforcement Litigation Aaron Ridlen and Deputy Attorney General Rebekah Durham.

Attached are the court order in this case and several briefs filed by Attorney General Rokita’s team during the course of proceedings.

In Evansville’s home opener against the Havoc on Saturday, neither side was able to score a goal in the first two periods.  The Thunderbolts managed to grab the first lead of the night as Riley MacRae scored midway through the third period, however that lead was short lived, as Huntsville tied the game on a goal that was awarded following video review.  The Havoc took the lead less than two minutes later and came away victorious by a 2-1 score.

Attorney General Todd Rokita, leader of the first state lawsuit against TikTok, persists in fight to hold tech giant accountable

1

One day after suing Facebook and Instagram (Meta), Attorney General Todd Rokita and his team on Wednesday continued fighting to hold Chinese-owned TikTok accountable in two separate lawsuits that assert violations of Indiana law.

In one complaint, Attorney General Rokita and his team accuse TikTok of luring children to inappropriate content through deceptive labeling. In another, the Attorney General targets TikTok’s collection of  reams of data on app users that ultimately can be shared with the Chinese Communist Party.

Appearing in Allen County Superior Court, Attorney General Rokita’s team demonstrated why Indiana’s lawsuits against TikTok are necessary to protect Hoosiers.

“TikTok’s false, deceptive and misleading practices pose a clear danger to Indiana users of this app,” Attorney General Rokita said after the hearing. “TikTok’s practices represent the very sort of conduct that Indiana’s consumer laws were written to prevent and prohibit.”

The Allen County court held Wednesday’s hearing to consider TikTok’s motion to dismiss Indiana’s lawsuits. That decision is expected later this fall.

“This company has bamboozled parents into thinking the TikTok platform is safe for children by claiming the app contains only ‘infrequent’ and ‘mild’ sexual content, profanity or drug references,” Attorney General Rokita said. “In reality, TikTok contains such material in spades.”

In addition, Attorney General Rokita said TikTok has deceived app users into believing that their information is protected from the Chinese government and Communist Party when, in fact, TikTok users’ data is subject to Chinese law and may be intercepted by the Chinese government. In a similar move to protect our children from predatory Big Tech tactics, Attorney General Rokita’s office joined 41 other states Tuesday in suing Meta for misleading young users. Specifically, Attorney General Rokita and the bipartisan attorneys general cite deceptive data collection practices and Meta’s own in-house studies that found their algorithms can addict children to the app.

“In multiple ways, TikTok represents a clear and distinct danger to Hoosiers that is hiding in plain sight in their own pockets,” Attorney General Rokita said.

Attorney General Rokita seeks emergency injunctive relief and civil penalties. The state is assisted in these cases by outside counsel Cooper & Kirk PLLC.

Eagles set to race for OVC titles Saturday

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country is set to toe the line at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Saturday morning at Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, Kentucky.

The men’s eight-kilometer race is scheduled for an 8 a.m. (CDT) start time, while the women’s 6k follows with a 9 a.m. start. Live results for the OVC Championships can be accessed at USIScreamingEagles.com.

USI is looking for its first-ever Division I team title after the men finished third and women finished second at the 2022 OVC Championships.

The Screaming Eagles dominated the men’s division in the Great Lakes Valley Conference prior to their move to Division I. USI captured a record 27 GLVC titles during their 43 years in Division II, including a GLVC-best 15 straight from 2015-19.

USI’s women also dominated the GLVC, winning the GLVC title for a record 14th time in 2021 and having won 11 conference championships in 14 years, including seven straight from 2011-17.

During their first year in the OVC in 2022, the Eagles did make some history as seniors Noah Hufnagel and Lauren Griewe each became the first USI student athletes to win a conference individual title at the Division I level. Hufnagel took home the men’s title in dramatic fashion, while Griewe, the 2022 OVC Female Runner of the Year, began the day with a near 20-second win in the women’s race.

Team wise, USI’s women were edged out by Eastern Illinois University by just one point, while the men finished behind Eastern Illinois and the university of Tennessee Martin.

This year, USI’s women have been undefeated against OVC teams in head-to-head competition, including a win over the defending champion EIU Panthers at the Live in Lou Classic last month.

The Eagles have been buoyed by the return of junior Cameron Hough (Olney, Illinois), who sat out the 2022 campaign due to injury, and the emergence of freshman Zoe Seward (Rochester, Indiana). Hough has three top-10 finishes under her belt this season, including a fifth-place showing at the Angel Mounds Invitational two weeks ago, while Seward has a pair of top 10 finishes and a top-20 finish under her belt.

Senior Mitchell Hopf (Santa Claus, Indiana) has been a strong number one for the men this year following a fourth-place finish at last year’s OVC Championships. He’ll be a contender for the individual title Saturday and is a big reason why the Eagles are in position to win a team title.

Hopf is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Angel Mounds Invitational, marking his second top-five finish of the year.

Red-shirt freshman Alex Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) has been a huge boost to USI’s efforts this season, with a pair of top-10 finishes to his credit in 2023.
