“PAST THE BREAKING POINT” – SENATOR MIKE BRAUN VISITS A SOUTHERN BORDER IN CRISIS

0

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Senator Mike Braun spent the day touring the southern border at Eagle Pass, TX with the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, members of local law enforcement such as the Maverick County Sheriff, and Border Patrol.

No community is immune from the border crisis, and Indiana law enforcement have to deal with many of the problems that begin right here on the southern border.

Senator Braun also asked members of local law enforcement and Border Patrol about the national security risk of our southern border, after FBI Director Christopher Wray testified that the border presented a serious terrorist threat to the U.S.

Texas Border Czar Mike Banks told Senator Braun that people of 169 nationalities had been stopped at the southern border trying to enter the United States illegally.

Last week, Senator Braun called on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who has presided over record illegal immigration as President Biden’s top border official, to resign or be impeached.

“Two years ago I visited a southern border at its breaking point, with Border Patrol unable to deal with the hundreds of thousands of immigrants trying to enter our country illegally. Since then it’s only gotten worse. Our southern border is both a humanitarian crisis and a national security crisis, with one border official telling me that 169 different nationalities have tried to cross in the last year. With over 600,000 ‘gotaways’ entering the country per year, who knows how many people who mean to do us harm have come in through the southern border. Congress needs to act fast to secure our border, and President Biden needs to wake up to this dire emergency he’s created.” – Senator Mike Braun

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) secured Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon as announced by the conference. This is Anderson’s second weekly award and the Screaming Eagles’ fifth honor this season.

The Eagles went 2-0 on the road trip to Lindenwood after taking down the Lions in a pair of 3-1 matches. USI had 107 kills, 95 assists, and 13 aces to pair with 153 digs and 13 blocks in just eight sets. The most impressive stat was the Eagles’ 0.225 hitting percentage through two matches.

Anderson was rightfully voted for the offensive accolade after posting a team-leading 42 kills, eight aces, and 51.5 points in eight sets played. To go along with her offensive abilities, Anderson nabbed 25 digs and three blocks. Thursday’s match saw Anderson secure a season-high 24 kills before she recorded her 11th double-double with 18 kills and 16 digs in Friday’s match. She has now secured seven straight double-digit kill performances and has earned double-digit digs in eight of her last nine matches.

USI enters the final week of the regular season 12-15 overall and 8-8 in conference play. The Eagles have an opportunity to clinch a postseason berth for the first time in the NCAA Division I era but will need to defeat the University of Tennessee at Martin at home. The USI, UT Martin matchup will be on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Thursday at 2 p.m. Further announcements about the OVC Volleyball Championships will be released at a later date.

BRAUN, HIRONO’S KOREAN AMERICAN VALOR ACT SIGNED INTO LAW

0

This bipartisan bill allows South Korean immigrants who served in the armed forces of the Republic of Korea alongside American troops during the Vietnam War to access health care services through the Department of Veterans Affairs, paid for by the Korean government

WASHINGTON – The bipartisan Korean American VALOR Act introduced by Senator Mike Braun and Senator Mazie Hirono has been signed into law. This legislation will allow the approximately 3,000 Korean American Vietnam War veterans that have since become naturalized American citizens to enroll in VA healthcare paid for by the South Korean government.

The House companion was led by Representative Mark Takano, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The bill passed the House of Representatives in May.

“I am pleased to announce that the bipartisan Korean American Valor Act has been signed into law. The men and women who bravely fought alongside U.S. troops and have become American citizens will now have access to the care and benefits they deserve.” – Senator Mike Braun

“Thanks to the Korean American VALOR Act, approximately 3,000 Korean American veterans in Hawaii and across the country will be able to access medical services through the VA. I am glad President Biden has signed our legislation into law, to help ensure our veterans have access to the quality VA healthcare they need and deserve.”– Senator Mazie Hirono

“Today, the United States is a step closer to ensuring every veteran can receive the care and services they have rightfully earned. Heroes who served alongside our military in Vietnam now qualify for the same benefits as their American counterparts. I applaud President Biden to opening the VA to more veterans who have served to defend our country.”—Rep. Mark Takano, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs

BACKGROUND

  1. Korea will reimburse the U.S. for healthcare services VA furnishes to Korean American veterans. In exchange, the U.S. will reimburse Korea for the healthcare it provides to veterans of the U.S. armed forces residing in Korea.
  2. The U.S. has established reciprocal agreements with the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. Veterans from these nations do not need to be U.S. citizens to be eligible for care, and VA has the authority to treat veterans of any combat era.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball announced that 5’10” combo guard Lexi Sepulveda (Bolingbrook, Illinois) has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the Screaming Eagles in 2024-25.

“We are very excited to have Lexi as part of our team and family here at USI,” USI Women’s Basketball Head Coach Rick Stein said. “She fits perfectly into our style of play and our team culture here at USI.”

Sepulveda comes to USI out of Plainfield East High School, where she averaged 22.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 assists in 2022-23 as a junior. Her squad won 22 games last year. Additionally, Sepulveda surpassed 1,000 high school career points last season as a junior.

Sepulveda was named to the News-Gazette’s 46th All-State Second Team and was an Illinois AP and ILBCA Class 4A All-State Honorable Mention last season. Sepulveda’s other accolades from last season included two All-Tournament team selections, Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team selection in the SPC East, and First-Team Herald News All-Area selection.

“Lexi can make plays in many ways on both ends of the court,” Stein added. “She can score it off the bounce and from three, and she is a solid playmaker for her teammates. Her ability to guard on and off the ball really makes her a tough defender as well.”

Sepulveda also played club basketball for Mac Irvin Lady Fire S40 – Godfather.

Governor orders immediate action on state’s water studies

Indiana Finance Authority to lead state water study efforts

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced major actions to provide the necessary and reliable data needed for future short- and- long-term water policy and planning in Indiana:

  1. Governor Holcomb has directed the Indiana Finance Authority (IFA) to begin exclusive oversight of the completion and validation of the INTERA water supply study currently underway along the Wabash River in Tippecanoe County expected to be completed and peer reviewed in January 2024. This study was originally commissioned and overseen by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) to operate at the speed of business and market demands positioning Indiana for further capital investment.
  2. Holcomb has also instructed IFA to accelerate the start of a planned comprehensive regional water study for north-central Indiana that will examine watersheds covering Tippecanoe County and at least 12 other area counties including Benton, Cass, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Howard, Montgomery, Parke, Tipton, Vermillion, Warren, White with potentially more being invited to be participate.
    • This comprehensive study, which will take into account future population and economic growth for the region, will be completed in Fall 2024.
    • Its results will incorporate the INTERA findings on overall water supply in the area to provide a complete picture of in-depth data needed to properly determine the amount of water that can responsibly be used to support all projected growth needs in the region and throughout the state.
    • This study will be the fourth such comprehensive regional water study that IFA has conducted since 2017.
  3. Finally, Governor Holcomb has asked IFA to add new water monitoring devices in the area to support this regional study while providing the public assurance that water use and availability will continue to be tracked accurately and in real-time.

“I am confident that these new efforts led by IFA will provide the necessary data to gain a greater understanding of the amount of excess water that is truly available to support all the surrounding region’s growth prior to any action being taken that could inadvertently jeopardize this needed resource.  No entity is better suited to lead this overall pursuit than the IFA which will approach this study in the same methodical, collaborative, and transparent manner the organization has conducted in the past.” Gov. Holcomb said.

“This is the natural next step to the data collection and will allow us the time to fully understand the region’s resource in order to continue our state’s unprecedented momentum in attracting employers that create high-wage careers.”

For more information on past studies and key updates on the announced actions please follow IFA’s website here.
