“HELP COMMITTEE “PASSES BRAUN, MANCHIN BILL TO ADDRESS MISLEADING MARKETING OF OPIOIDS

0

WASHINGTON — Today, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee passed Senators Mike Braun and Joe Manchin’s FDA Review of Efficacy EERW Double-Blinds (FREED) of Opioids Act. The FREED Act would require scientific experts to review the controversial enriched enrollment randomized withdrawal (EERW) methodology used to approve new opioids and ensure opioids are only marketed for uses where they are both safe and effective.

“The opioid epidemic continues to devastate our country, tearing families apart, eroding communities, and claiming far too many lives. Passing the FREED of Opioids Act out of committee is a good start to ending this epidemic of preventable deaths and pushing the FDA to fix their misleading marketing of dangerous opioids,” said Senator Braun

“In 2022, more than 109,000 Americans died from a drug overdose, and nearly 80,000 of those deaths were related to opioid or synthetic opioid use,” said Senator Manchin. “I’m proud our bipartisan legislation, which would compel the FDA to prioritize public safety and fix their flawed marketing practices for dangerous opioids, has passed out of Committee. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support this commonsense amendment that would save countless American lives from this devastating epidemic.”

Specifically, the FREED of Opioids Act would:

  • Require the FDA to convene a joint meeting of the Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs Advisory Committee (ALSDAC) & Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee (DSaRM), to vote on whether EERW methodology should be used in clinical trials for opioid analgesic approvals.
  • Require the FDA to convene meetings of the Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Advisory Committee to do a post-market review of opioids approved using the EERW methodology.
  • Require the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a study on EERW and its effectiveness in proving the efficacy of opioids in treating chronic pain.

UE School Of Education Awarded $500,000 Grant From Lilly Endowment For Advancing The Science Of Reading In Indiana Initiative

0

EVANSVILLE, IND. (12/14/2023) The University of Evansville (UE) has received a grant of approximately $500,000 from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its initiative, Advancing the Science of Reading (SoR) in Indiana. The grant will support UE’s School of Education.

UE is one of 28 Indiana colleges and universities that received grants from Lilly Endowment to support efforts that integrate Science of Reading-aligned principles into teacher preparation programs.

Through the support of this funding, the School of Education’s goal is to thoroughly prepare pre-service teachers to implement the SoR principles in their future classrooms. In doing so, this will ensure the increased literacy ability levels of Indiana’s elementary-aged students. The grant includes professional development for literacy faculty and pre-service teachers, along with SoR resources that will allow the application of SoR throughout clinical experiences.

“Investing in education is an investment in the future. This grant not only empowers the institution but also signifies a collective commitment to advancing the science of reading in Indiana,” said Dr. Sally Busby, Clinical Assistant Professor of Education. “By supporting our programs here in Evansville and across Southwest Indiana, we look forward to a brighter tomorrow through the transformative power of literacy.”

“It is imperative that more of Indiana’s elementary students learn to read proficiently, and it is essential that current teachers and the next generation of teachers are prepared to use proven principles to teach reading in their classrooms,” said Ted Maple, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for education. “We are pleased therefore to help Indiana colleges and universities strengthen the use of these research-based principles to teach reading in their teacher preparation programs.”

Lilly Endowment launched the Advancing the Science of Reading in Indiana initiative in 2022. It complements a statewide effort undertaken in 2022 by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to improve reading achievement in K-12 schools by helping current teachers implement Science of Reading-aligned principles in their classrooms. In 2022, the Endowment made a $60 million grant to the IDOE to support that work with school districts and teachers across Indiana.

The University of Evansville is a private, comprehensive university located in the southwestern region of Indiana. Established in 1854, UE is recognized across the globe for its rich tradition of innovative, academic excellence and vibrant campus community of changemakers.

Home of the Purple Aces, UE offers over 75 majors, 17 Division I sports, and a unique study abroad experience at Harlaxton, the University’s very own Victorian manor located in the countryside of England. For more information, please visit evansville.edu.

Before joining Chattanooga, Groenert accumulated diverse experience, serving as Chief of Staff/Legislative Director for the Office of the Indiana Treasurer, Director of Government Relations and Public Policy for the Southwest Indiana Chamber, and Campaign Manager/Senior Advisor for Congressman Larry Bucshon.

His professional credentials include:

Junior earns honorable mention accolade

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Giulia Cardona became the first player in University of Evansville volleyball history to earn All-America status as she garnered American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention honors on Wednesday morning.

With the NCAA Final Four on the horizon this weekend, Cardona continues to be the national leader in kills per set (5.34), points per set (6.14) and attacks per set (15.00).  Cardona became UE’s first honoree in the 42-year history of the AVCA All-America Teams at the NCAA Division I level.  She was the MVC’s lone representative on this year’s list.

“I am happy to see Giulia being recognized on a national level,” Purple Aces head volleyball coach Fernando Morales said.  “We were witnesses of what she did night in and night out, but to see those on a national scale realizing this is huge for Giulia and our program.”

In total, 98 players were honored with 14 being named to first, second and third teams and 56 garnering honorable mention accolades.  Earlier in the month, Cardona became Evansville’s first player to garner AVCA All-Region honors.

Cardona was UE’s first  Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and was one of the top performers in the MVC and the entire nation.  Cardona wrapped up the 2023 campaign with a total of 593 kills, breaking her own UE program mark, which she set in 2022.

She was named the AVCA GameChanger Division I National Player of the Week on October 17 becoming just the second player in league history to earn the accolade.  Cardona was a 4-tie MVC Player of the Week and recorded two of the league’s four 20-kill, 20-dig performances in 2023.

This marks just the second time that a Purple Aces female has garnered All-American honors at the Division I level.  In 2000, Krista McKendree was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Third Team All-American.
