Aces travel to Missouri State

EVANSVILLE, Ind.Â â€“ Off to the best start in close to 60 years, the University of Evansville menâ€™s basketball team opens its Missouri Valley Conference slate on Wednesday with a trip to Missouri State.Â Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Springfield with ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network having the coverage.

Looking at the Start

– Victories over Chattanooga and Southeast Missouri State in the Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Classic saw the Purple Aces improve to 6-0 on the season

– It is the first time UE has won its first six games since the 1964-65 undefeated national championship team

– Just as impressive â€“ UE has eclipsed its win total from the entire 2022-23 campaign

Last Time Out

– Saturdayâ€™s finale in Chattanooga saw the Aces take a 93-74 win in their rematch against SEMO

– Leading from the outset, UE was up by as many as 27 points in the first half before the Redhawks stormed back to get within single digits before the Aces regrouped to pull away for the win

Â What a Comeback

– With 11:40 remaining in Fridayâ€™s game against Chattanooga, the Aces faced a 62-42 deficit

– In what was tied for the 8th-largest comeback in MVC history, the Aces stormed back to take a 2-point lead in the final minute before clinching an 85-77 victory in overtime

– Chattanooga was shooting 53.3% from the field at the time they assumed the 20-point lead; over the final 11:40 of regulation and the 5-minute overtime period, the UE defense held the Mocs to a tally of just 16.7%

– Averaging 27.5 points per game while leading the Aces to a pair of wins at the Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Classic, Ben Humrichous was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 27

– He opened the week with a season-high 28 points versus the Mocs before tallying 27 against the Redhawks

– Humrichous has scored at least 11 points in each game and ranks third in the MVC with 19.0 PPG

– Converting 8 of his 12 attempts in the Nov. 25 win over SEMO, Joshua Hughes reset his UE scoring mark with 21 points

USI Chamber and Women’s Choirs to present “Music for the Feaste of Christmas”

The University of Southern Indiana Chamber Choir and Womenâ€™s Choir, under the direction of Daniel Craig, Associate Professor of Music, and accompanied by Thomas Drury, Instructor in Music, will perform â€œMusic for the Feaste of Christmasâ€ at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 10 at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville, Indiana. The event is open to the public at no charge.

The music performed will range from ancient chant to modern arrangements of significant texts for the season including unique and eclectic accompaniments of Eastern singing bowls and percussion, as well as violin. The concert will feature music by Dr. Christine Wisch, Adjunct in Performing Arts, and other musicians and composers including Craig Hella Johnson, John Michael Trotta, Michael McGlynn, Kim AndrÃ© Arnesen, Ralph Johnson, Eric Whiticre, Giuseppe Pitoni, Mateo Flecha el Viejo, Dan Forrest and Craig.

Evansville returns home for midweek game with Bellarmine

The Purple Aces will look for their first back-to-back wins of the season on Wednesday night

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — After picking up its first win of the season, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team returns home looking to start a winning streak.

Evansville gritted out its first win of the season after three overtimes, putting up 103 points against Chicago State. It was the first time the Purple Aces had put up 103 points or more since scoring 108 points against NAIA Oakland City in 2016. The last Division I opponent that UE scored over 100 points on came in December of 2004 in a 104 to 77 win against Ohio University in Athens.

On the subject of overtime, Sunday’s game was the longest in program history since a triple-overtime game against crosstown foe Southern Indiana during the 1986-87 season. UE outscored their former longest performance by 10 points for their second-highest-scoring overtime game. Evansville also set a program record for the most rebounds in a game pulling down 70 boards against the Cougars, just above the previous record of 67 at Creighton on March 5, 2005.

Bellarmine comes into Wednesday’s game looking for its first win of the season. The Knights are currently 0-4 on the year after games against San Jose State, No. 4 UCLA, No. 19 Louisville, and fellow MVC team Murray State. Looking at the roster, junior guard Hayley Harrison is averaging a team-high 14.3 points while senior guard Claire Knies is just under double figures at 9.5 points per game. Sophomore forward Paetynn Gray is fresh off an 11-point game and is the team’s leading rebounder (4.3), while junior guard Hope Sivori is averaging a team-best 3.8 assists.

Freshman forward Maggie Hartwig was named the MVC Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office. Hartwig earned the honor after having her second double-double of the season against Chicago State. Hartwig scored 18 points while pulling down 15 rebounds and going a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line.

Over 10 Lbs. of Methamphetamine Seized during Traffic Stop on I-64

Posey County â€“ Monday afternoon, November 27, at approximately 3:10 p.m., Trooper Hadley was patrolling I-64 near the 9 mile-marker when he stopped the driver of a white Dodge Charger for traveling east at 88 mph.Â When Trooper Hadley approached the vehicle, he detected an odor of cannabis coming from inside. The driver was identified as Demertria J. Gray, 33, and her passenger was identified as Shawnunique D. Phillips, 34, both from St. Louis, MO.

During a search of the vehicle, Trooper Hadley found over 20 grams of suspected marijuana and over 10 lbs. of suspected methamphetamine. Gray and Phillips were arrested and taken to the Posey County Jail where they are currently being held on bond.
