Aces earn 74-50 win over Cardinals

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Playing in front of 5,172 fans inside the Ford Center, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team put on a show in an impressive 74-50 victory over Ball State on Saturday afternoon.  Evansville improved to 4-0 to open a season for the first time since 2017.

Highlighting the day was the performance of Kenny Strawbridge Jr.  In the second half, he reached the 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career on his way to a team-high 13 points.  Ben Humrichous and Joshua Hughes scored 12 apiece.

“Our guys were locked in from the start.  It is a mindset and a commitment to the process.  To be able to respond the way we did in front of a large crowd and play the right way was something that I really commend our guys for,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland exclaimed following the win.  “We are committed to reviving this program.  Winnings games is part of that process and this is one step in that journey.”

Antonio Thomas completed the day with nine points while Yacine Toumi recorded eight points and a game-high eight boards.

Ball State opened the game with a triple and, following a 0-for-3 start to the afternoon, the Purple Aces got on the board with a Cam Haffner triple.  Kenny Strawbridge Jr. forced a turnover and scored to give UE its first lead at 5-3.  Trailing 9-7, Joshua Hughes scored the first of his eight first-half points to tie it up and open a 6-0 run that gave UE a 13-9 edge at the 12:07 mark.

Evansville held that lead for the remainder of the game.  Strawbridge’s third basket of the period put the Aces up 19-14 inside of the 9-minute mark before two field goals by the Cardinals cut the edge to one a minute later.  Over the next four minutes, the defense by the Aces took over, holding Ball State scoreless.  Ben Humrichous and Hughes picked up baskets that pushed the lead to a game-high of six points at 24-18.

In the final stretch of the half, BSU made it a one-possession game and that would be the deficit at the break with Evansville holding a 30-27 edge.  Hughes led the Aces with eight points while Basheer Jihad posted 14 to pace the Cardinals.

Out of the break, the Aces took full control. The defense held the Cardinals without a point over the first seven minutes of the half while the offense reeled off 17 points in a row.  Evansville held Ball State to a 0-for-5 start in the latter half while forcing seven turnovers.  Humrichous picked up a 3-pointer before Strawbridge connected on a free throw to establish the first double digit lead of the day at 37-27.

Thomas stepped up in the latter part of the run, scoring two field goals off turnovers with the lead growing to 20 points (47-27) with 13 minutes remaining.  With 8:43 left in the game, a triple by Thomas made it a 59-33 game.  One of the most impressive parts of that sequence was that the Aces never let up; BSU got as close as 19 points before UE quickly countered.

With 2:19 remaining, the Aces extended the lead to its largest at 29 points (74-45) with BSU scoring the final five points to make it a 74-50 final.  For the game, the Aces outshot the Cardinals by a 45.8%-31.4% margin while taking the battle of the boards by a 39-31 margin.  Basheer Jihad paced Ball State with 21 points.

Next weekend, UE will be on the road in Chattanooga facing the Mocs on Friday before squaring off against SEMO once again on Saturday.

Screaming Eagles Headlines:
Eagles Secure Postseason Bid. After the Screaming Eagles win over UT Martin on Wednesday, USI was guaranteed a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. This is the first conference tournament berth in the NCAA Division I era for USI. The Eagles enter the playoffs with a season-high four-match winning streak after sweeping Lindenwood and UT Martin in back-to-back weeks.

You Have To #OVCit. USI faces the four seed, Morehead State, in the first round of the tournament. These Eagles have battled twice this season with Morehead State holding a 2-0 record after posting a pair of wins (3-0 & 3-2) earlier in the year. The Eagles also hold the 4-0 all-time record over the Screaming Eagles with three of the four matches coming in sweeping fashion. In neutral territory, it’s anyone’s game.

Postseason History. Since the inaugural 1979 season, USI has had three conference championships with the latest being in 2021 when the Eagles topped Missouri S&T in the GLVC Championship. In the last 10 seasons, USI has been in five conference championships and one NCAA tournament. For Morehead State, the Eagles have a 44-36 all-time record in the OVC Championship with eight straight appearances. Morehead State has made the championship match three times since 2019, winning the OVC crown in 2020 after defeating Jacksonville State, 3-0, in their lone match.

Season Recap. After a disappointing year in 2022, USI put together a solid performance in 2023 with a 14-15 record and 10-8 in conference play. The Eagles hired Jeffrey Aucoin and returned all but one starter from last year’s roster. USI had big wins over Radford and New Orleans while earning solid victories over top-tier Lindenwood. The Eagles had close encounters with Bradley, Eastern Illinois, Morehead State, and Tennessee Tech who pose big threats this postseason.

OVC Leaderboard. In conference matches, USI stands third in hitting percentage (.213) and fourth in aces/set (1.47) and points/set (16.39). In all matches within the OVC, USI is top five in digs/set (16.41), aces/set (1.57), blocks/set (2.09), opponent aces/set (1.37), hitting percentage (.196), and opponent hitting percentage (.198).

Senior Leah Anderson holds the most kills (428) and points (506.5) in the OVC and has her name in three categories including second in points/set (4.48) and kills/set (3.79) while standing fifth in aces/set (0.41). Senior Abby Bednar sits sixth in aces/set (0.38), seventh in points/set (3.91), and eighth in kills/ set (3.17). Junior Carly Sobieralski ranks fourth in assists/set (9.73) while sophomore Keira Moore rounds out the leaders with the eighth-most digs/set margin (4.14).

About Morehead State. The Eagles enter the tournament as the four seed with an 18-12 overall record and 11-7 in OVC play. Morehead State has dominated at home with a 12-3 record but has struggled on the road with a combined 6-9 record in neutral/road sites. The Eagles have been on a roll as of late, winning seven of the last eight matches against Tennessee State, SIUE, UT Martin, and Lindenwood. Morehead leads the OVC in opponent hitting percentage (.169) and is second in opponent assists/set (10.62), assists/set (12.56), opponent kills/set (11.50), kills/set (13.38), and digs/set (17.40).

UE Women’s basketball faces tough road test at Michigan State

0
The Purple Aces visit the Breslin Center for the first time in 16 years
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Evansville women’s basketball team hits the road for its longest road trip yet to Michigan State.
Evansville’s comeback against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels ended just short as they fell in the final game of the Tri-State Challenge on Wednesday evening. The Aces fought to the final buzzer in the 77-75 loss after two strong offensive games. UE had its best defensive game of the season so far against the Colonels. Evansville outrebounded EKU, pulling down 41 boards while also picking up 9 steals and blocking 2 shots. The Aces also drew 29 fouls from the Colonels, giving themselves 33 attempts at the free-throw line.
Sunday’s game will be only the second time in program history that Evansville has played Michigan State. UE’s prior visit to East Lansing came in the 2007-08 season as part of the Preseason WNIT where the Aces played three games against Marshall, Western Kentucky, and Michigan St. The Spartans come into tomorrow’s game as the winner of the previous contest by a 20-point margin.

Michigan State hasn’t lost a game yet and has spent all three of its first games at the Breslin Center. The Spartans are coming off a record contest against Detroit Mercy after shooting 70.9% from the field on the Titans. Michigan State also tied the school assist record with 34, led by junior guard DeeDee Hagemann. Hagemann scored a career-high 24 points in the Spartans 105-44 win over Detroit Mercy.

Early in the season, UE is getting strong performances out of its underclassmen on the roster. All of Evansville’s top three scorers are underclassmen, led by sophomore point guard Kynidi Mason Striverson. Along with Mason Striverson, the Aces are getting production from their freshman forwards Neveah Thomas and Maggie Hartwig. Both newcomers put up double-digit performances over the last two games along with a double-double each.
Thomas led the team on Wednesday night against EKU with a career-high 24-point performance. She just edged out Hartwig’s monster game against SIUE only three days prior as the best freshman performance against a Division I team in almost a decade. Along with a big offensive performance, Thomas also had eight rebounds, one steal, and one block for an all-around game.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball lost a heartbreaker to La Salle University, 79-78, to open the Duke Blue Devil Challenge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Screaming Eagles are 1-4 after today’s action, while the Explorers are 4-0 to begin the season.

The Eagles came out hot in the opening and went toe-to-toe with the Explorers, winning their first opening half of the season. After falling behind 24-18, USI went on a 12-5 run to take a 30-29 lead when sophomore guard Jack Campion (Milton, Wisconsin) hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.

USI would go on to score six of the last eight points of the half and post a 36-31 lead at the intermission. Campion led the Eagles through the first 20 minutes with a season-best 10 points by halftime, while sophomore guard/forward AJ Smith (Edwardsville, Illinois) nine at the break.

In the second half, USI pushed the lead to as many as seven, 51-44, with 14:45 on the clock when junior forward Jack Mielke (Downers Grove, Illinois) hit a three. La Salle, however, would rally to regain the advantage, 54-53, with a 10-2 run with 12:49 to play.

The Eagles and the Explorers would trade buckets and leads until La Salle took the lead for good at 3:08, 73-72. USI had posted its last lead of the game at 3:34 when junior guard Jordan Tillmon (Pine Bluff, Arkansas) hit a long-range bucket for the 72-71 advantage.

La Salle increased the margin to 77-72 with USI hot on their heels and the Eagles closing the gap to 77-75 on a three by USI junior guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) with seven seconds left.

After La Salle got two more free throws to seal the Eagles’ fate, Mielke hit a three with one second remaining to complete the 79-78 final.

Overall, USI shot a season-high 53.3 percent (32-60) from the field and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc (10-23), in addition to winning the battle of the boards, 32-29. The Eagles also had a season-high four players score in double-digits, led by Smith with15 points.

Smith was seven-of-12 from the field, including a three-pointer, while tying for the team-lead in rebounds with eight.

Officer-Involved Shooting Occurred Overnight at the Evansville Regional Airport

0

Vanderburgh County – Saturday morning, November 18, at approximately 12:22 a.m., Evansville Police, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, and Indiana State Police responded to the Evansville Regional Airport reference to a male allegedly threatening airport personnel with a knife. When officers arrived, they encountered the male inside the lobby area of the airport, and he was in possession of a knife. Officers negotiated with the male for approximately 15 minutes before the male aggressively moved toward the officers with the knife still in his hand. Officers from the Evansville Police, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and one Indiana State Trooper discharged their firearm. Officers immediately summoned for an ambulance and started life-saving measures on the male before he was transported to an Evansville Hospital. The suspect’s name, condition, and pending charges will be released later. No officers were injured during this incident.

Officer Involved Shooting

0

On November 18th, at 12:22 a.m., Evansville Central Dispatch received a call from the Evansville Regional Airport for a disorderly subject inside the lobby. The caller stated that the male was threatening airport personnel, he had an approximate 4-inch knife, and was using it to tear up furniture. Members of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police and the Evansville Police Department arrived on scene. They encountered the adult male suspect in the lobby area inside the airport and he was holding a knife. No one else was in the immediate area at that time.

A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy, who is also a Negotiator, was one of the first to arrive. The Deputy attempted to gain rapport with the suspect by negotiating for nearly 15 minutes. The suspect stated he was upset about his status in Evansville and wanted to go back to his country.

During negotiations, numerous commands were given for the suspect to drop the knife. On several occasions, the suspect yelled at the officers to just shoot him. The suspect never dropped the knife and at one point, he put the tip of the knife to his head and made a stabbing motion. The suspect escalated the situation when he yelled obscenities at the officers, jumped out of his seat, and aggressively moved towards officers with the knife in hand.

Between EPD, VCSO and ISP, less lethal tools were on scene. Due to the suspect escalating the situation, lethal force and less lethal force were utilized at the same time. Three Evansville Police Officers fired their duty weapons. Members of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police also fired their weapons.

Life-saving measures were quickly rendered to the suspect on scene prior to AMR arrival. The suspect was transported by AMR to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, the suspect is in critical condition and still receiving treatment. No officers were injured during the incident. The suspect’s name and pending charges will be released at a later time.

Per protocol, all three EPD Officers were taken to the hospital for blood draw and the EPD Peer Support Team was called in to assist the officers. All three officers will be placed on Administrative Leave during the investigation, which is also protocol.

A press conference will likely be held on Monday, November 20th, to discuss further details about this investigation. The location and time of the press conference will be announced on Monday morning.

No. 6/9 Indiana Wins Nine Events in Second Night of Midseason

0

BLOOMINGTON – Indiana swimming and diving completed the second day of the Ohio State Invitational on Friday (Nov. 17) as the men’s team extended its lead, and the women remained steady in second. IU won nine events Friday night inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

The IU women opened the night with an NCAA A cut in the 200 medley relay, going 1:36.20. Indiana finished fourth but swam faster than the previous meet record (1:36.42) set in 2013. Indiana’s quartet was junior Kacey McKenna (24.41), junior Brearna Crawford (27.33) and sophomores Chiok Sze Yeo (23.44) and Kristina Paegle (21.02).

The Hoosier men had the two best 200 medley relays as a Louisville and Ohio State each had their ‘A’ relays disqualified for false starts. Indiana’s ‘A’ group of senior Brendan Burns (21.40), junior Josh Matheny (23.39) and seniors Tomer Frankel (19.83) and Gavin Wight (19.22) finished in 1:23.84, just .13 seconds short of the NCAA A standard.

In the very next event, Frankel and Burns were part of a top-three sweep of the men’s 100-yard butterfly. Frankel, the bronze medalist at last year’s NCAA Championships, finished first in 45.26, followed by junior Finn Brooks (45.99) and Burns (45.97). The trio smashed the previous pool record of 47.98.

Freshman Toby Barnett was the runner-up in the 400 IM, recording a 3:42.54 as four Hoosiers finished in the top 10. Junior Ching Hwee Gan was the top Hoosier in the women’s race, placing third in 4:12.21. Senior Anna Freed (4:12.94) took fifth and freshman Reese Tiltmann (4:13.21) was sixth.

After taking the 500 free on Thursday, junior Anna Peplowski captured her second individual win of the week in the 200-yard race in 1:42.97. She led a 1-3-4 finish for the Hoosiers, as Paegle went 1:45.43 and senior Ella Ristic got in at 1:45.91.

Competitors at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano and IU junior Rafael Miroslaw battled it out in the men’s 200 free. Miroslaw led through 150 yards, but Guiliano pulled in front on the final leg to win in 1:32.14. The Hoosier came in at 1:32.52 as both swimmers finished under the pool and meet record times.

The Hoosier men swept again in the 100-yard breaststroke. The trio of senior Jassen Yep (51.49), junior Josh Matheny (51.81) and Maxwell Reich (51.87) all swam under the meet record time (51.88) and were the only three under 52 seconds. It was also the first time either Yep or Reich had ever swum under 52 seconds.

Junior Kacey McKenna and sophomore Mya DeWitt shared a special moment in the 100-yard backstroke, tying for first in 52.47. The two Hoosiers were never separated by more than .18 seconds. On the men’s side, senior and reigning NCAA Champion Brendan Burns flexed his muscles by dropping a 45.29 and setting a meet record. He was half a second faster than the field.

Junior Skyler Liu was stellar on the boards again, taking her first win of the week on the 3-meter springboard with a 297.25 – 13.8 points better than second place. Liu was second in the 1-meter competition Thursday. Sophomore Morgan Casey was third with an NCAA Zone Qualifying mark of 275.70.

Both winning teams in the 800 freestyle relay won by over four seconds. All four women’s splits were under 1:46.20, and Peplowski (1:43.52 split) was the only woman under 1:44. Ristic, Gan, Peplowski and Paegle recorded a 7:01.08, enough for an NCAA ‘B’ cut. For the men, Miroslaw (1:32.53), sophomore Kai Van Westering (1:34.41), Frankel (1:33.98) and Burns (1:34.63) captured a meet record and ‘A’ cut in 6:15.55. Miroslaw’s opening split was one of two under 1:33 and just one hundredth of a second short of his 200 free earlier in the evening.
